Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

Saw on Twitter that no system since wii has launched with a VC/Classics games.
Seems to be the biggest complaint as well which is a bit weird.

The system being lite on features was known since the UI leak. The stolen Switch the guy bought is the same other press sites have gotten. No day one update nor eshop, despite being confirmed for launch, but it's still slick.

Still feels incredibly weird to me that Nintendo didn't have one last bit of info about the console before launch. I know we still have a week but having not heard anything yet, I'd be surprised to see anything before launch. So many details of the system were left unanswered.

Yeah I'm not sure why this is surprising to anyone. They made it very lean to run very fast day 1 (as this was the major issue with Wii U's OS day 1), and will undoubtedly be adding things (like media apps) down the line.

Pretty sure I read it was 720p again, I can't find where I read it though.

The July dev docs leak said 720p but I don't think anyone has confirmed that officially.

Literally no one will care.

Guess you missed the reactions to bad shots from a compressed trailer upscaled from 900p to 1080p then.

Anyway, if they offer the possibility to take and upload screenshots, they need to do it right. Native internal resolution and at least let me save them on a usb device to upload wherever i want.

Previews sound pretty good to me in as of so far, joycon connectivity issues being the only major concern but it seems very limited in %.

This launch is pretty embarrassing from the perspective of a former hardcore Nintendo fan.

Zelda isn't even a selling point, as a lot of us are content with playing it on our Wii U.

Not denying that the majority of Console launches are terrible, but there is absolutely no reason for me to even consider buying a Switch now.

And that's perfectly fine. Wait until you do feel there are good reasons for you.

We're all different. I also have a WiiU, love it, and use it fairly often. But I'm really looking forward to Switch, even though I know I could play BOTW on the hardware I already own.

lol that was it thanks. my memory was failing me there.

Activity log is neat, and i look it up pretty often, but it's really THAT big of an issue if it's not in at launch? Lmao

Talking about priorities

only people making it a big deal are people defending it against the disappointment of others.

Sucks no vc or activity log but don't care personally about no Netflix. Still pissed no miiverse or Streetpass like function. Still be there midnight next Friday.

They are evaluating an entertainment device as a whole. Which is why they need to get those ASAP.

Well, I tend to think people are capable of rational thought, and if those features are a deal breaker for them they should definitely hold off until they are satisfied. But I don't think people primarily buy game consoles for those features, especially in the days of $50 Fire Tablets and $39 Roku Sticks. It's a nice convenience feature that Nintendo should sort ASAP, but I really hope people aren't so misinformed that they would pay $300 expecting them to be there at launch.

People complaining about no virtual console on day one ... If the Switch comes out with 30 virtual consoles games day 1, then is "We only have 5 Switch games and 30 old Nes games for $300, wtf Nintendo"... Also the activity log could be part of the Parental Control system.

I'm sure he is writing a full preview and I'm sure that will go up on Kotaku today. I'm guessing he woke up and with the embargo over put a quick impression on Twitter in the meantime. Just because a journalist shares a negative opinion doesn't mean he or she is doing his or her job wrong.
I am not saying anything like that. I think it would be preferable if he had a piece of writing ready to refer to when he states conclusive opinions like that the system is undercooked, but ultimately if he has one in the works it should be fine. There is very probably a good case to be made for the system being lackluster in terms of features, but I would expect the journalist to make the case rather than just state it. But I do believe it will be coming soon, Jason Schreier is a top-of-the-line gaming journalist.

I honestly didn't know people used the activity log on Nintendo consoles. I used it after a long run of Mario Kart Wii with friends just so we could laugh about how long we sat in one position or as a pissing contest when discussing the hours played on certain games with friends. I guess it could be useful for those who like to divvy up their time in balanced amounts to avoid overplaying. I don't really see it as something to fight about though haha.

Why the hell does it matter if we have tons of other ways to watch netflix or youtube already?

This is a new device, and if it's not as crippled as people seem to think it is, then Netflix and other streaming apps should be available and work perfectly.

It's got a bigger screen than my phone and it has a kickstand. You're telling me that you have other devices better suited to watches videos? That you are willing to carry along as well?

Why can't the game go into a suspended state while quickly switching to a browser to look something up instead of having to pull out my phone or another device?

These things are basic.

No virtual console is an absolute joke. Don't give me any nonsense about how other consoles didn't launch with it. It's not some new technology that they need to figure out. It's emulation. It's a bunch of nerds can get emulators for pretty much every old school console to work on the NES classic, Nintendo should be able to get virtual console implemented properly for their new console at launch.

I don't think it matters if there are alternatives, but it's also not like it hasn't been said a hundred times before.

There are some diehard ninty fans here, but I imagine most folks are just sick of people beating a dead horse in every single switch thread. I complained about some of the missing features and launch line-up, but at some point, you either decide on whether or not you still want the product and move on.

It's Twitter...

Posting: "Lol look at this silly thing that happened in Zelda" won't get you responses saying: "wtf, 720p??? ur a total pleb bro"

I promise you that.

But how tho
EVERY time I play ANY game for ANY amount of time, I open up the Activity Log and see how much I've played of it, where it ranks against other games, delete all of the apps from the activity logs so only games remain, etc.

Has anyone said they cancelled a preorder or something because the Activity Log isn't there? Is it possible that maybe they're just a little disappointed and wanted to voice that in a thread about Switch previews?

Everything has to be black and white, I guess.
I haven't and won't, but it's by far the second biggest disappointment about the hardware. Achievements not being on the Switch is number 1, of course. I see Activity Log as an ultra neat bonus that makes me very happy but isn't standard. Achievements are just Nintendo being Nintendo and being light years behind everyone else in certain aspects.

I adore achievements, and it makes my blood boil beyond belief that Nintendo refuses to implement them onto their hardware.

Jason and Emily are big fans of Nintendo, but they are also honest. I'm sure the core fans aren't bothered by any of this news. but Ninty needs to sell this thing to people outside of that bubble too, doesn't seem like a good start.

My personal take, on 0-5 scale (5 being 'oh fuck', 0 being 'no fucks'):
Sync issues: 4, but fall into the 'Will need to see how it plays out in the wild/how prevalent it is'. Could be a 0 if it's just interference in some situations.
Activity Log: 0. I'd like one to be there but it'll be months before I think to even check. I've used my 3DS and Wii U ones maybe 3 times each over the years. Mostly an idle curiosity.
VC: 3 - Probably the biggest annoyance about launch. Just have to hope the VC games start flowing in quick.
Video Apps: 1 - Would be nice to have a nice portable Netflix device, but just a nice to have.
Browser: 1 - Not hurting for web browsers, but I do like being able to bring it up while in a game on the WiiU to search for things related to the game.
Mii Verse: 2 - On the one hand, barely ever looked at it. On the other, it's your main community hub and the neat art that came out of it on WiiU was always cool.
Streetpass: 0 - Idle curiosity on 3DS for me
Achievements: 2 - I'd like to see an evolution of the stickers stuff. I'm not an achievement hound, but it's a pretty base feature these days.

Bruh, this better be the best damn Zelda game the world has ever seen by a mile.

And this digital item has multiple usages? Play as a portable. Play has a home console. Play in tabletop mode.

A phone can do the same. Use on the go, use as a speaker phone, or use like a regular phone around the house.

Now who do you know that would buy a phone that could only do that?

You can save them to the SD card.

Al lot of those things can be implemented in the future. These are very, very early days.

Streetpass would be, potentially, pretty cool on Switch.

The lack of features are not a deal breaker for me. Zelda is going to consume so much of my time, I won't even think twice about it.

Fucking hell this whole activity log thing is being blown way out of proportion.

People are disappointed it's not there. Not outraged. No one is cancelling pre-orders over it. It's just a small part of the larger discussion.

Good lord.

Activity logs are neat but man I legitimately forget they exist. I think I've only used it a few times on 3DS and only twice on Wii U so it's not too much of a dealbreaker, but it'd probably be nice to have it back.

With regards to things like video apps I think the ubiquity of them make their absence on the Switch simultaneously really odd but also kind of "whatever". Maybe this stance is something that'll be re-evaluated more once they do find their way on the system since I think they would be appreciated a whole lot considering the versatility of the platform.

Right now I think Nintendo are solely focused on launching predominantly on the promise of it's games, and I'm pretty excited about being able to play Zelda, Bomberman, Fast RMX and Shovel Knight day one on hardware I'm really excited about.

I hope that JoyCon controller unsyncing issue will be fixed cause right now that's the only thing that's having me worried.

The fact that you listed three ports and an incredibly cheap looking Bomberman game is why that argument doesn't hold much water.

I think he's just a really big Nintendo fan(boy)

There's no point discussing anything Nintendo with someone like this.
Whatever. 1 2 Switch looks awesome to anyone who doesn't just play the same generic games over and over again. I like video games to be unique and social, the best Wii U games were the 4 player party games.

Oh yeah that's for sure. But that's not what i meant.

I was referring to the fact that they should let you upload the screenshots from the app not to only certain websites (like twitter or fb), but also on other websites that don't compress your pictures. You may want to share them on places like neogaf and other enthusiast forums, and we know how people react to bad screenshots lol.

no one cares about no VC, no activity log or no miiverse at launch.

It's just the typical outrage at launch
Oh i agree with that. I just wanted to understand how the pictures app works, because it's something i'm interested in (and i also don't particularly like to see endless pages of complaints about bad screens lol).

I don't care about VC/log/etc missing launch either.

You can save them to the SD card.

Ok then, that's great, problem (partially) solved. Thanks!

eShop comes in with the day one patch, and purchases are directly available (remember/know that several digital indies are available at launch, like Shovel Knight and FAST RMX).
Thanks. That's what I thought must be the case, but just trying to sort the complaints of the "we can't get in to show you" sort from those of the "this device is under-featured" sort after skimming the thread.

It's just gaf and youtube. No one will care and no one cares about no VC, no activity log or no miiverse at launch.

It's just the typical outrage at launch

Is literally anyone in this thread outraged? Or are you just using the phrase outrage to refer to comments you don't agree with?

Like people have said all these media apps will come. The issues will be fixed. You don't have to buy a Switch now. You can wait until the fall and buy one lol

The better question here is how come none of these reviews mention Bluetooth headphones? Like if I had a Switch my review would actually be in depth and not just cry for paragraphs about the lack of Netflix

Dismissing the lack of a specific feature in isolation is beside the point, a bit. There's a "death of a thousand cuts" effect happening here.

If it were ONLY the Activity Log missing no one would care. If it were ONLY missing VC then you could say that well whatever, most consoles haven't launched with one. If it were ONLY missing a browser you could say well it's not immediately necessary. If it were ONLY missing Netflix etc. etc.

But once you have two or three "minor" features missing, every additional issue or missing feature is amplified.

First adapters have always been beta testers to an extent.

Pretty hilarious how bare bones this thing is at launch though. 100% rushed to the market, no doubt about it. We will see if it matters.

It's not a big issue. People are just disappointed.

For Nintendo fans and "core" gamers, it should be disappointing. For Nintendo, it should be a big issue. While most of the things listed are ancillary to playing games on the console, the inability to offer basic features inherent to their ecosystem at the launch of a new console is a bit troubling. That, paired with the lackluster lineup filled with cross-gen games, first party up-ports, and well...super old indie games makes you wonder just how undercooked this whole thing is.

Well, I tend to think people are capable of rational thought, and if those features are a deal breaker for them they should definitely hold off until they are satisfied. Anyone involved in marketing will tell you this line of thinking is your biggest mistake. It's not that people are stupid. It's that people don't want to think when purchasing any entertainment or recreational product. If you are missing one the industry's standard feature, however minuscule, it will affect your product. Apple is probably the only exception to this rule and that's largely because they have an outstanding and courageous marketing team. The rest simply aren't as lucky.

Write an actual hardware review going over key features and important questions? Like, how do Bluetooth headphones work?

Nah just harp on the shit we already knew the entire time. Controversy = Clicks.
