Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

People keep using that word without knowing what it means. A literal soft launch would be if they had only produced something like 10,000 units and distributed them via MyNintendo as a test for a full launch.

You don't produce mass quantities of something, run superbowl ads, get John Cena to come to events, for a literal "soft launch."

Yes. An ACTUAL soft launch was the original NES in New York.

Interesting. Is there any reason for this?
Not sure. But it's nice if you got the Neon console because you can also have the console all blue or all red.

Personally i got the grey one preordered and i'll buy the neon set later on, but i'm ok with colors being swapped. I like them that way too.

They had wifi disabled and brightness to the default, which is 50%.
Thanks. Seems in line with what i'll be using, maybe the brightness a bit higher (like 60-65%), but it shouldn't go down too much. I also plan on playing Zelda mostly docked, gotta use that OLED TV :p

Will be very interesting to me if those figures go up with games like Shovel Knight or Disgaea 5. Playing them exclusively undocked.

I'm not saying there's zero credibility to it, but all the "soft launch" talk seems a little cringey nevertheless.
Just watch Arlo's video about it. It's pretty convincing.

It's gonna feel weird to set a parental control for myself, but I really use the activity log on Wii U/3DS. I really miss it when I use the PS4.

the buttons and analogue sticks look so tiny based on that comparison next to dual shock 4. i had to buy rubber stick covers to make them bigger for DS4 since i thought those were too small.

That surprises me. Admittedly, I'm concerned about the button/stick size on the joycons as well, but mainly because I have pretty big hands. I've never had an issue with the PS4 sticks though.

How I'm imagining you:

I'm still in on this half-baked console. At this point it's just a Zelda machine. The fact people are trying to downplay real issues is hilarious

From my viewpoint, there's nothing that has come out in the previews that contradicts anything that we've already learned about the Nintendo Switch leading up to now. It has always been "just a Zelda machine" since January.

I can see this surprising people that haven't been following the console as closely, though.

Yep, and the PC Cemu people will be popping by to kindly share their 4k screenshots.
I've used Cemu. I have a powerful PC, I.e 6700k, n1080 etc., and I far prefer playing WiiU on my actual WiiU. Cemu hiccups like crazy until it fully caches, and some games run like crap. Yeah, it's still vey impressive. But I wouldn't want to use it over a real console.

The only thing Nintendo has adversited for the Switch is games. And people know Nintendo make games. The standard feature is games.

For launch this strategy has worked. They appear to have a plan to add more features by the time their online infrastructure rolls out in the fall. By then they will have a lot more software available that appeals to be a wider audience, which is what they will need to do for Holiday sales.

I hope you are right and I am wrong.

Already have a Wii U, so if Im really eager to play Zelda, I can just get it to the Wii U. Street pass, don't give a fuck. I freaking love stats like how much Ive played a game, so activity logs is fantastic for me, abslutely terrible it isn't on launch. I love to check my playtime stats on Wii U, 3DS and playtime on Steam. No Netflix and YT is also a deal breaker for me.

Feels very rushed. Will wait til christmas.

This is the correct move if you already have a Wii U

Makes it easier to apologize lack of features.

Oh stop... You can subscribe to the idea that Nintendo actually has a strategy planned here without "apologizing".

I won't deny that some users seem to be jumping to the "defense" of Nintendo here, but not everyone. I believe that Nintendo isn't rushing the Switch, but I wouldn't use that as a justification for someone else to buy it right now. If you don't believe that to be the case, you can discuss as much without trying to insult people. If someone insults you first, you can take the high ground and work around it.

Maybe playing activity is logged in the cloud (when connection available) and is viewable on a smartdevice?

It most definitely is! Strangely, you can only view it via the Parental Controls app right now. Makes me wonder if they won't build it into that online app come summer/fall.

Jason and Emily are big fans of Nintendo, but they are also honest. I'm sure the core fans aren't bothered by any of this news. but Ninty needs to sell this thing to people outside of that bubble too, doesn't seem like a good start.

I had a buddy who ordered two and was willing to sell me one.

After these previews I'm declining. Horizon and mass effect will keep me busy.

Yup no lies detected. Some of the other games announced could be released in 2019 for all we know.

I think if they do it right at E3 and have a "relaunch" with basic apps (YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, browser) and a good swath of games in the Fall it might be okay.

Yeah, the joycon grip has terrible ergonomics compared to the DS4. When/if I get a Switch it'll be either handheld mode or a Pro controller for me.
You tried it?

That's a good point. I dont like the idea of not being able to use it outside.

Watch the Gamexplain footage when he takes it outside. It's not exactly ideal, but it doesn't fare that much differently compared to your average phone (unlike what the wording of engadget would like to suggest).

3 hours is great in all honesty. It's pretty comparable to 3DS. I was worried it would be shorter.

Great is a strong word. It's decent, and in line with what we could realistically expect from a portable console with beefy specs.

Exactly. For the gaf faithful and the hardcore nintendo fans they knew what to expect. Is it disappointing? sure, but not unexpected

How big is the Switch?! This is driving me crazy. Every picture of it doesn't seem like its accurately scaled as it would be in person.

Less bulkier, but wider Wii U Gamepad is my guess. Anyone get ahold of one and can confirm?

Yeah, I got to hold the system and accessories when I ran into a Nintendo rep setting up a display kiosk at my local GameStop

honestly the joy con grip reminds me of the wave bird for GCN aka one of the best controllers ever made in terms of ergonomics

I doubt it'll be as good but I'm sure it'll be fine

I'm playing with the split joy con setup tho. my hands will have freedom!
