Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

I'm so torn about whether or not to use a screen protector.

I felt they were necessary with the DS, 3DS, and Wii U because those all used the soft plastic resistive screens and seemed a lot more prone to scratches--especially since they were all being prodded by hard plastic styluses.

With the switch using glass, not being prodded by a stylus, and not being slipped into a pocket like a phone, a screen protector seems a lot less important.

Hmm.
ALWAYS use one on a touch screen device, especially when it's not a clamshell design.

Would you rather develop a scratch on an easily replaced $8 piece of plastic/glass, or a $300 device?

There's using it and there's everyday use, no way a side on dock will do well over time, maybe laying it on its back? even so I really don't think it was designed for such a thing.
Im sure they mean on its back? On its side makes no sense, because the joycons stick out.

What are you, trolls? Just because I care deeply about such a feature thats been important to me means I have loose screws? lol ok sure thing. And I rarely show off playtimes to others, I track it for me.

You write down in your notebooks how much time you spend on each video game, I'll sit in front of my fridge and count how many times the compressor cycles on and off over the weekend. We all need our hobbies.

Has Nintendo said if they're planning to use that sliver of screen that's poking up out of the dock for notifications or is that just to give you a grip to pull the device out?

That's a very clever thought!

But I've never seen a screen protector that doesn't negatively impact the quality of the image.

Depends on the glass.

I've used my S7 Edge for almost a year now with no screen protector and have no visible scratches.

I dunno. I've never used them on any of my phones or tablets and I even carry my phones with me in my coat pockets with my keys and everything. No scratches whatsoever.
Maybe I'm just really lucky?

I am going to use a carry case with my Switch though.

The no online multiplayer at launch is just dumb.

Uhu, tell me more

Sorry if this was asked and answered.

Is there any confirmation that Bluetooth headphones will work? I love heaving wireless audio on my Vita and phone.
There's so much latency on the Vita's Bluetooth audio output that I hardly even consider it a functional feature. Though maybe that's just my experience.

In the 3 years I used my old iPhone 5C I never got a single scratch. Not even hairline ones only visible at an angle. If I clean it, it looks brand new. So far nothing on my SE (well, the screen, I scuffed a corner T_T) either.

(My 3DS's though... Ugh)

That's nice, I doubt the Switch will have the same quality of materials as an S7 Edge.

Also, google "s7 edge screen scratches" -- I just did and there are tons of results with many complaints about screen scratches, even in the first 24 hours of ownership. You don't have a scratch until the day that you do, and THAT is the day that you wish you'd spent a few bucks for a screen protector.

Truly mega fail launch from what I read on NeoGAF so far, I believe it's all true without having even to read the previews.

No friends included, how am I going to play that 1-2-3 Switch game. Oh man, only AAA game at launch is Zelda? It reminds me of Tetris for the Game Boy and Sonic for Genesis. Really tough times ahead. The Pro controller is a negative too .. no headphone jack on a similarly priced controller to DS4 or Xbone? It has way more features but what's the point without a headphone jack! Do Nintendo think they are Apple and can justify the price of the controller without a headphone jack!

Don't get me started anymore - I thought I could finally ditch my mobile and iPad for good but this dam thing doesn't have YouTube or a browser? Man! I didn't include any games in my pre-order as I just wanted to surf the net on a console, something I dreadfully wanted to do on my Vita as well. Now I have to get Zelda and game on a game console 24/7 and complete it in 3 days. I will have practically nothing to do after that!

This is just a horrible launch!

Yup, and if you don't want to have to move that adapter back and forth from the dock, any USB-C cable should work. Though, if it's a lower wattage cellphone charger, then the charge time might increase.

Hum, I might consider buying an USB-C cable if it becomes too bothersome.

Dunno exactly where to put this now that switches are also appearing in retail store inventory. We can finally see what the actually mark up is on the switch. Looks like the cost for the system for retails is about 285$ per unit. So its only being sold for about a 15$ profit per system.

The screen is really small, you would have to be super close to the TV or have Owl eyes.

No analog triggers isn't a strict negative, unless you are considering analog triggers with a switch like the XBOX Elite controller. In fact, they would be terrible for most of nintendo's franchises.

What a load of crap, only a nintendo fan would spin that as a positive.

I can count the number of phones and tablets I have ever had scratched screens on no hands and that includes the pre-gorilla glass type days. Annoyance of slight sensitivity problems daily is much more annoying than the false sense of security that the "protector" scam industry sells.

Unless there's some day one patch that fixes this... it hasn't been fixed. It doesn't happen ALL the time, but there are framerate dips for sure, and they're pretty jarring to say the least. But that's all I can say at the moment.

Wait, i didn't mean that now it's 30fps locked all the time. But if the guy who made the engadget preview tried both the 12S and the 1.0.0 version, and he said that frame rate is much better in the newest build, it's reasonable to assume that frame drops happen far less.

I don't think there's going to be a D1 patch, or that the game will have flawless performances, but that bit certainly implied that the frame rate is good now.

Look more closely. Most of what's popping out is bezel. The little bit of actual screen is such a small sliver that even a small banner ad might be hard to squeeze in.

I've played a lot of Wii U games. I can't think of a single one that would have been made worse by having the triggers be analog.

Yeah, those systems really had it rough. But Sonic launched three years after the Mega Drive did.

Yes, I am aware this post isn't serious.

Treat it like a soft launch. You will feel better.

It's really weird how some people just don't get it that some people find the lack of activity log, Netflix, YT etc. as deal-breakers. People have their own interests, get over it.

I find the lack of activity log, Netflix and YT as deal-breaker for me. Don't understand why? Too bad.

And yet there is TONS of evidence that you are wrong. MANY people with a vast variety of devices have had scratches. And slight sensitivity problems -- use quality protectors. I've never had any such problems. If you do, then you bought a crappy brand.

But if your luck ever does run out, and you do get scratch(es), you will wish you'd spent a few extra bucks.

R1 for main weapon, R2 for secondary more powerful charge weapon.
Also, I'm not saying it 'needs', I just personally like analog buttons and think they can add depth and nuance to gameplay.

Metroid uses face buttons for firing, though. Even Prime 3 has the fire button on A by default.

Zelda is Zelda you can play it if you want it looks pretty good

1 2 Switch looks like a lot of fun for local gatherings and drinking games, and a give way to show your pals the cool new tech you just bought

Bomberman is cool if you like Bomberman and it has a nice campaign and online play

RMX for racers, MK8 next month

Isaac is coming soon as a great time waster

More launch games is always a plus, but I'll do just fine with what's there. The Switch is clearly launching undercooked and with some issues, but every console launches with issues. You'd be a fool to buy new hardware say one and not expect some sort of problems. At least the damn thing isn't exploding (yet.)
