Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

A minor thing people are disappointed about. The horror!!!!

Thank god. Activity logs are just a source of temptation to find out how much of my life I've wasted.

Every launch is the same shit, and it seems that people never learn this.

Can't remember the last console launch I was part of that was worth the money. There are some kinks here and there but I don't expect the world at launch like some people do, and its served me well. Consoles always need time to get going.

Activity log was a really cool feature, bummer it's out. But it seems like something that can be implemented fairly easily via a day 1 patch or something. Kind of like you said, a minor thing.

I'm in for Zelda day 1, but yeah, the rest seems pretty weak.

sooo, people get their achievements? I mean, my.nintendo rewards are kind of achievements.
Not good enough.

The My Nintendo "kinda" achievements that exist right now are nowhere near the level where they should be. Achievements not being system wide, with excellent tracking, social features, and "neat bonuses" is a massive and crushing disappointment in every way.

Both Microsoft and Sony have been dramatically improving their own versions of achievements in awesome ways and Nintendo doing a watered down job is infuriating.

Sony has added rarity tracking and screenshots for every trophy you get and Microsoft has also added rarity tracking and unlocks backgrounds for you to use for your UI (which is freaking awesome). An equivalent would be if only their respective mobile apps and sites would show achievements and that isn't enough.

For me, achievements are the best addition in the modern era of gaming and Nintendo continues to flub it with every hardware they release.

No analog triggers isn't a strict negative, unless you are considering analog triggers with a switch like the XBOX Elite controller. In fact, they would be terrible for most of nintendo's franchises.
Splatoon, Smash and a Metroid (lol) could definitely used them. Or Luigi's Mansion, etc.
Zelda also for the bow.

Yeah, imagine if you couldn't tell your friends your play time? Why even bother.

What's the big deal, you're actually going to log your time manually if they don't do it for you? Got some screws loose man... Maybe you can just give yourself some parental controls if it's that important.
What are you, trolls? Just because I care deeply about such a feature thats been important to me means I have loose screws? lol ok sure thing. And I rarely show off playtimes to others, I track it for me.

Don't think we've heard anyone specifically mention handheld mode. Sounds like Bluetooth/wireless interference though so fingers crossed.
Ok good news then hopefully. Thanks! Atleast someone is nice when replying to me! :)

Really happy that charging via a battery pack works. I have a 16000mAh charger in my backpack at all times, so that's 15 hours of Zelda gaming on the go. Should be fine for every use case.

I'm so torn about whether or not to use a screen protector.

I felt they were necessary with the DS, 3DS, and Wii U because those all used the soft plastic resistive screens and seemed a lot more prone to scratches--especially since they were all being prodded by hard plastic styluses.

With the switch using glass, not being prodded by a stylus, and not being slipped into a pocket like a phone, a screen protector seems a lot less important.

Hmm.

Yep, my BotW thirst is that strong. The Switch is just functional as a handheld machine from what I can glean from the previews, and that's pretty much all I need. It's too expensive for what it is, but eh what else can I do. I'm part of the sheep :P

PS4 takes up too much space in my room, so currently it's not in my consideration.

fair enough.

Same but I have way more than you on steam.

The exclusives are there definitely there on the PS4. killers games that can't be found on the pc. . I was just trying to understand your thought process of why you would not get a ps4, but a switch which is the lesser of the two.

I'm probably an outlier, but how many games does one need to feel satisfied? I have a 3DS with a bunch of games I still havent played. My brother recently gave me his PS3, and I never played any of those games. He has a PS4, so I feel like I can go over his house I'd I really feel compelled to play it. Hell I have Wii games I still never put much time into.

Plus my Steam library. I played Arkham Knight during my holiday break from work. I was actually able to play F4, on my PC I built in 2009, the beginning of 2016. I was playing RE7 most recently.

My priority for 2016 was to upgrade the PC. I got a new job and was able to save up for all the parts by August.

I got a nice bonus from work the day more preorders on Best Buy came up for Switch. And seeing as I skipped Wii U, it was very easy purchase to make.

The Switch launch was at exactly the right time for me.

No greater example than being a Wii U day 1 buyer, I still can't get over that shit. Pretty much killed most of my respect for Nintendo after what I was greeted to on launch day with the UI cluster fuck and day 1 update taking days to download

That was straight up farcical. People are calling the Switch rushed, which it is, but the Wii U was next level.

How the hell did you come up with this conclusion
Because MyNintendo missions thus far have basically been achievements, albeit uninteresting ones. Hell, for Fire Emblem Heroes they're LITERALLY achievement. Every MyNintendo mission has an accompanying iOS Game Center achievement.

That said, it's all a far, far leap from MS, Sony, and Valve's systems. Without a centralized system with online viewing it's worthless.

It's a shame Nintendo won't do a full jump into the achievement game because there's so much potential to revolutionize it with trademark Nintendo flair. But Nintendo gonna Nintendo.

Impressions seem mostly good with the exception of the syncing issue which is imperative they sort out by launch.

Everyone can armchair quarterback about this thing and its prospects but I'm pretty tired of it all. I want to get my hands on it first and foremost but beyond that, I'm eager to see how it actually performs in the market just so hyperbolic speculation dies down.

I've seen on reddit that this was false info from jeuxvideo (french website) so I did some googling and it actually looks like they redacted that info as false (BT headset support). Only found one quick link though, so take with a grain of salt: http://www.melty.fr/nintendo-switch-les-casques-bluetooth-sont-finalement-incompatibles-a592119.html

What the fuck? What kind of console can't use bluetooth headset?

The vita could use bluetooth headphones for chist sakes.

Has Nintendo said if they're planning to use that sliver of screen that's poking up out of the dock for notifications or is that just to give you a grip to pull the device out?

Since when is it a crime for folks to enjoy gaming the way they want to? Bud, I only game about 2-5 hours a week and I have gotten grief on other forums for it. Some of these people are hive minds and if you don't do things the way they do, then you have screws loose. Isn't it funny how some of the same people preach on here to always treat others with respect and dignity, unless you are different, of course.

It is pretty pathetic.

Edit: on topic, I am keeping my pre-order, however, this launch is pretty baron. I'd like to see some more beef for the price. Hopefully, the baby will grow into a beautiful young lady.

They did seem mostly good. But the thing it reminded me of most is how...little there is to it. Like, they were able to scour the system software but there's nothing there. The system UI walkthrough I watched was the most boring thing ever because there's nothing to see. Even when the update comes to enable the store, there's still basically nothing to do except play the games (I understand that's all some people want, but most people expect more out of consoles/handhelds these days).

I was wondering about that, too. I think it would be a really cool idea to utilize that part of the screen.

Sorry if this was asked and answered.

Is there any confirmation that Bluetooth headphones will work? I love heaving wireless audio on my Vita and phone.

Hyperbolic speculation will never die down.

Either it will falter and everyone will topple over each other to proclaim Nintendo doomed and the console the worst piece of shit ever.

Or it will sell gangbusters and people will dig in deeper. Calling the Wii a casuul fad where people bought one game and had it collect dust is still not bannable, no matter how many times it's been proven utterly wrong.

Man, they is a cool idea to use it for notifications. I wouldn't have thought of that, but now I want it.

There was confirmation for that but it looks like it's been confirmed as false info for now. There were links to the source and the reddit thread on the page before.

Hmm.

I usually get a screen protector for all of my devices but I skipping one for the Switch mainly because I'll be using it in docked mode most of the time. Also I feel like the times I do bring it with me it will be in a case and should be fine

Zelda also for the bow.

Would've hated it for Splatoon. Squid form is a digital input. A frame perfect release is important for charging. Analog inputs are good for racing games and certain types of shooters. Besides that the games that came out in the gamecube era that specifically tailored their mechanics for analog (sunshine, luigi's mansion). Otherwise it would detract more than it would help, for most nintendo franchises. Especially their platformers.

Air stalling in 2d mario games, is something you can spam multiple times in succession, which suits digital. 3D Mario games have long jumps and crouching which feel better with digital. DK has you freaking mashing L/R alternating.

And yet I still haven't purchased either of those systems and I'm purchasing a Switch at launch.

It's going to be about appeal of the software. Like it always has. Nintendo's bare bones launch is paying off right now. If they want to sustain that momentum they will need to have more for the Holidays.
And that's okay. This kind of launch is fine, it's just that the people who are saying the PS4 and Xbone launches were just as sparse are kidding themselves. The Switch launch is the most barebones launch I've ever seen.

Does anyone know how the audio works when docked?

My TV setup is a bit barely functional at the moment in that sense, so I have some weird audio setup stuff going on. My Xbox One and PS4 have to use optical out to a converter that goes into my fairly old preamp, which has a 1/4" output that I plug a 3.5mm adapter into that plugs into my sound system.

TL;DR of this is, can I use the 3.5mm jack on the Switch when it's docked, or do I need to splurge on an HDMI receiver to make this work?

Not gonna read through everything, but is that the only issue thats popped up, but other then that good impressions.

I hope it is a update that fixes the issue

My preview of the Switch is up over at USgamer.

Tons and tons of images of the system and all its accessories.

I will take any questions while I'm awake too.

The dock sounds even worse than I thought it was. It's also a shame ugly and bland the carts are. Looking like digital really is the way go.

You must've missed the N64 launch.

Yeah, that's fair. I'm tired though of reading people try to convince others to either increase or decrease their interest. Most everyone has made up their minds at this point and that's fine. The launch is admittedly sparse, so if anyone wants to wait until the fall before jumping in, that's understandable. From Nintendo's point of view, I don't think it matters much to them as long as they can maintain momentum. The launch looks like it'll be fairly strong but no one really knows what they're going to do to support the console immediately afterwards in the coming weeks. Hopefully they do regular updates.
