WP: Sessions Met with Russia Twice Last Year, Didn't Disclose During Confirmation

The committee in which none of the other members – including the chairman McCain – could be bothered to have similar meetings in 2016? Good luck with that.

I dont know the history with this, were committee members dodging the Russians? Besides Session?

Toobin did state though that he would not say that Sesssions lied. He made that point very clear. He said that IF he's found to have willingly and knowingly lied, then yeah perjury would be appropriate with 5 years of prison time.

And don't know the other statements made today very much support that he lied?

I was hesitant to doubt a British spies word.

Seriously I can't get over how big this is lol. Sessions could of been compromised long before Trump and blackmailed.

If all this is true then, the American people chose a russian spy backed by Russians to be their president.

That's insane and humiliating. You've been compromised all your data is getting siphoned all the way to Putins iPhone.

No fucking wonder Bannon is on sec council it's not an advice thing it's a monitoring thing. Trump is scared shitless of anyone in power that could expose him.

Jeffrey Toobin on CNN saying he's eligible to go to prison.

He wont. Perjury isn't usually prosecuted against high ranking officials even when it's a clear case, and if it is he'll just get the Scooter Libby treatment and get pardoned by Trump.

Seeing Van back peddle today on CNN was delicious. He KNOWS he fucked up.

But this shit isn't new for Van. He had that extraordinary moment with Jeffrey Lord last Summer during the campaign. But he's spent every waking moment since then running from his words. No spine whatsoever.

What did he say last summer?

They do. I was just clarifying your quoted comment because it was alluding to Toobin stating that Session did in fact commit perjury and he didn't say that.

They simply didn't meet with him at all in 2016, making Sessions' behavior all the more suspect.

From what I've read there was no real reason to meet with the Russians at this capacity. Splitting up your time like that is usually reserved for allies amd countries alligned with your political interests. But Sessions, it seems, had some sort of interest.

"Justice officials said Sessions met with Kislyak on Sept. 8 in his capacity as a member of the armed services panel rather than in his role as a Trump campaign surrogate.

“He was asked during the hearing about communications between Russia and the Trump campaign — not about meetings he took as a senator and a member of the Armed Services Committee,” Flores said."

Nothing will come of this.

This is an awful defense since you really can't separate the two roles as long as he was involved with the Trump campaign

Friday: Flynn lied to Pence about Russia
Cynical Gaf: nothing is going to happen
Monday: Flynn fired
Cynical Gaf: Well that's nice but Why hasn't Trump been impeached yet!?!

The Armed Services Committee has no reason to meet with the Russian Ambassador.

This is whats going to make his explanation ring hollow. What reasons did Session and Session alone need to discuss with a Russian ambassador that other committee members didn't. Of thays the best answer theyve got, this shit is done.

White house just confirmed he met with them, just saying that it was for the armed services committee.

Why isn't this a valid defense? If he's required to do it in his role as a Senator, and the question at the hearing was if he did it in his role as part of the Trump campaign (thus the reference to being a "Surrogate") then it does in fact come down to the nature of the conversation, doesn't it?

The reason so many of us are less optimistic is because people can't resist jumping to crazy conclusions. Talking to an ambassador from another country isn't treason, that's what they're here for. As far as I understand, the question is was he doing it as a surrogate for Trump or as part of armed services committee business.

I spent eight years watching Republicans try to dance on Obama's grave ("This testimony about Benghazi will have him in jail by March!") and I always thought it was hilarious. But I'm seeing a lot of the same thing here.

Nonsense.

At his Jan. 10 Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, Sessions was asked by Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) what he would do if he learned of any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of the 2016 campaign.

“I’m not aware of any of those activities,” he responded. He added: “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.”

Because he lied about it under oath. Him having contact with the Russians wasn't necessarily a problem, but committing perjury about it certainly is.
