Look, if Obama acted on poorly vetted intelligence he would be appropriately lambasted for doing lasting damage to our democracy and constitution for eternity.

He made the right call.

The key difference being that Flynn had enemies throughout the GOP and sessions is favored even among "Never Trumpers."

He messed up when he didn't raise the alarms as loud as he could about what the Russians did. People didn't see him doing a "our country is under attack at this very moment!" Display and now we have a small part of the country that thinks Putin isn't that bad and another that just tunes out when they hear the word "hack."

I don't think he is overly racist at least on any public level. He was appointed by Obama which makes it all the more interesting it was Obama who specifically removed him from the Line of Succession for Attorney General

The AG (independent of the president) can appoint a special counsel. Not aware of the president having any such authority.

It takes time to properly vet information. If Obama didn't act on this it was because he didn't have the right Intel on it.

Obama signed an EO explicitly Boente 7 days before leaving office explicitly removing him from order of succession.

Trump later reversed it and made him acting AG until Sessions was confirmed

There must be a reason he did that before leaving.

I've followed this story pretty closely and I don't remember anything being particularly damning being released around that window of time. A special investigation seems pointless during that period seeing as Trump and his AG would be given authority to halt it.

I can only hope he loses his position with zero glamour. Best case scenario is I see him in handcuffs and live long enough to watch him rot and die in jail. I'm glad the people glorifying this administration get to watch it continuously flake off corrupt, pathetic, idiotic and patently unpatriotic individuals.

You seriously think if he put this out on the eve of Trump getting inaugurated that it wouldn't come across as 1) sore loser and spiteful and 2) also undermine our democracy? It would have been treated not as an attack on the country but as a partisan issue. What we now know is he felt there was enough information coming forward that needed to be investigated but fat chance he was going to get house and senate to actually do anything on that information. Instead it seems he made a call to make sure what was investigated, could not be removed or destroyed, paving the way for whistle-blowers and leakers to siphon details to the public if the republicans themselves wouldn't do anything about it. Because of this its not a partisan issue, and if Republicans don't pursue proper investigation they will be on the wrong side of history and our country will actually maintain its checks and balances without one party directly trying to sabotage the other in the transition of power. This situation was a shit sandwhich for Obama that he tried to play cool during the election and Hilary ended up losing, he paved the way to still possibly have it work against trump while maintaining the plausibility of due process and checks and balances.

The NYT article makes it clear that what's being reported tonight is not all new cable.

You might have a point if we narrow it down specifically to the WP post article. But I don't believe the WP's report is all that divested from the story NYT is chasing.

It's being spun as partisan anyway. Even as Republicans inch slowly toward supporting an independent investigation, they're making this a partisan issue. That was going to happen in this political climate regardless. Our country has become too polarized.

I am glad that our intelligence agencies are literally defying our President to do the right thing, but that was a bet I don't think it I'm comfortable with. This hinges almost entirely on Trump and his lackeys being and remaining as incompetent as they have.

Again, if he acts on intelligence that isn't 99% vetted and accurate, he will go down as the most reckless president we've had since...who even knows?
 
I don't think an executively iniated investigation would've been the best way to tackle this given the fact that you would then shift the authority to the incoming president. Pressuring congress is by far the more effective method to remove Trumps ability to influence an investigation.

Will someone wind up in prison? Will an investigation take place? Doubtful. Will Sessions resign? Flynn resigned for less but was also an easy pawn to give up. It's huge news and I'd say Sessions loosing his position as AG is maybe 65% if the story is stuck to.
 
As far as I've seen, Obama did the best he could with the information and time that he had. He made sure everything available was spread among the intelligence agencies to avoid anything getting stuck in limbo.

I'd agree action should have started as early as last summer, but hindsight is 20/20.
