Fantastic OP. The only game I ever thought I could be as hyped for as a new Zelda would be a sequel to Nier. Here's what seems to be the best Zelda game in decades followed 4 days later by Nier Automata. It makes me feel like a kid again.

so how many people here are old school nintendo fans (grew up with the original NES, SNES, N64, GCN) that just got away from the big N but after seeing the reviews came in this bitch to catch a contact high? My last Nintendo system was the cube, and OoT is my GOAT, so I WILL find a way to play this god damned game.

Played a few hours, still in the tutorial section really but damn this game is fun as fuck.

Why is cooking so satisfying in this game?

Should be getting my wii u copy tomorrow. I won't have as much time as I'd like to play it, but even so, can't resist trying it out for an hour or two before this week is over.

I'm going to requote myself from June of 2016 after E3 and the first real showing of BOTW

It's funny. I've been going through my old posts since I know I've written about my desires for Zelda in the past.

Me from 2006 prior to Twilight Princess said:
Assuming that this isn't simply a Wind Waker-esque overworld with empty land substituting the empty water, this is awesome. This goes back to the whole original Zelda and LTTP style of having a living, breathing overworld and dungeons and caves peppered all throughout as opposed to the "hub" style of OoT and MM.

My favorite memories of playing the original Zelda was from just messing around in the overworld exploring the vastness of it, or burning a bush or blowing up a rock, and being so shocked and excited when a passage appeared and I heard that classic chime... I really hope that TP repeats these moments. :)
Unfortunately, TP did end up being more hub style and largely without much to do.

Me from 2009 on my desires for the Wii Zelda game said:
1) The Overworld: This is my big one. When I was a kid playing the original Zelda, what captured me was the absolute sense of exploration; wandering from screen to screen, not knowing what lay next. Sure, there were some limitations in the exact routes (not having a raft/footladder, etc.) but for the most part, the whole map was accessible right from the beginning. This meant easy areas next to the first temple, and areas like Death Mountain where you got your ass handed to you... and the only way to find out your limitations was to go to those areas.

This has not been captured in a Zelda game, probably since LTTP and I would argue that even there, there were some serious limitations d/t the light/dark mechanic. This was distilled even further in OoT, MM, and TP. Essentially, the Overworld is still not only a hub, but you're constantly ushered in which direction to go. What I want more then ANYTHING is a fully breathing overworld; I want to be able to go into areas where I shouldn't go to yet because I'm not strong enough. I want to have that sense of exploration, and trepidation going into an area. I want to be gently led so I feel like I found it myself as opposed to having a character say "YOU'RE GOING TO THE ICE TEMPLE NOW."

I think WW actually did this pretty well; the Overworld was huge, and I did feel like I was exploring. Unfortunately, the challenge wasn't really there, and uh... the entire map was water. I would LOVE to explore a Hyrule full of land, lakes, snowy peaks, deserts, forests, multiple villages, ruins and oh yes... palaces that was comparable to the size of TWW. That would seriously be my dream game.

Other things:

2) Utility of Items: TP introduced some really cool items... the few times you could use them. What use was the Spinner aside from using it in the Arbiter's Grounds, a few times in the Overworld for a few pieces of heart, and the last temple or so? the Dominion Rod? I'm glad that they introduced so many, but I want them to be more then glorified keys to get to the next part in the game. Hell emulate LTTP and introduce some completely optional items to the mix.

3) Music: Orchestrated, and let Kondo and Yokota do it. The dynamic music thing was worked around in Mario Galaxy (Bowser battles, going underwater, etc.) And even if it isn't exactly what they want, I think that they give more credit to it then how actually effective it is. This shouldn't be an issue at this point.

4) Voice Acting: Like most people's wishes, everyone but Link I would hope.

5) Temples: This is the one area where I think Nintendo is on top of their game. If they keep up the quality that they had in TP, I'd be happy.

Finally:
Me in 2012 after discussing with someone else about how the "open world" Zelda-1 game wasn't ever going to come out due to the direction the series had taken said:
Oh and no crap it's not coming. I'd be extremely surprised and thrilled if the next Zelda game deviates from an empty hub, largely inaccesible areas until you get an item that's essentially a key, and the "collect 3 things, something happens, collect 5 more things, win" formula

Needless to say, Zelda: BotW could be the Zelda game I've been waiting for my entire life. Since E3 2014, I've been expecting the worst but hoping for the best, and everything that I've seen manages to get that 6 year old kid in me absolutely thrilled. I just still can't believe that it's happening.

I have been waiting for this game since I was a child. Zelda has always been my favorite franchise, and while I've enjoyed every iteration, what I envisioned as a child has never been realized. The joy of discovery, of sheer unadulterated exploration and stumbling upon something... it's been touched on since the original, but there's always been something lacking. I'm 34 years old with a wife, a career and a kid on the way, but right now, I feel like I'm 6 again.

My Special Edition just shipped from Amazon! The Switch and all the BotW amiibos "may" experience a delay because somehow it ended up at the incorrect carrier facility, so if I get the game tomorrow but not my console I'm probably gonna jump off of the balcony of my ground floor apartment enough times until it kills me.

First Zelda game that I'm legitimately excited for since Majora's Mask and the sole reason that I'm getting my first Nintendo console since N64. All the reviews/impressions/previews have been great so far. Hoping that it lives up to all of my expectations.

Well finally shipped from Amazon and shipped with the Switch. I imagine I'll get it around 4 pm or so tomorrow, unless it gets delivered straight from Buffalo (45 minutes away, but the service in my town is way slower).

I've got the eye doctor in the morning. Might actually get a new pair of glasses this time, been sitting on an upgrade for a couple years as my vision has been getting worse but not that much worse. Fits a bit with the open your eyes stuff, and with the fact that I'm going to have to come at this game with new eyes as a diehard fan of the aLttP formula, as an SNES kid rather than an NES kid...

As to the OP, late last night Griss's post about the death of aLttP, makes me think something like a Break with the Past would have been a better title. I get that Link is waking up, presumably from a past time, and that this game is hearkening back to old Zelda, but it sounds for all the world like a Zelda throwback rather than a aLttP throwback, with its core conceit being to break the pattern set by aLttP and OoT, and give people that exploration-heavy, combat-heavy, more RPG-like Zelda that so many have wanted as interest in traditional 3D Zelda has waned.

This is the first time I will be at a console launch day, by all appearances at least. It also seems like one of the most seminal launches to experience. New Zelda, in the strongest sense of new, and a new way forward for Nintendo hardware launching together on the same day. Two of the things I cherish most in gaming together starting a new way forward, a way forward, for which I have high hopes.

I also have my doubts. For the Switch, as to whether it will sell, as I think it can; as to whether it can salvage console gaming in Japan, as I hope it can; as to whether it can garner the sort of support, particularly from Japan, which I hope it will garner. I think the Switch's core concept gives it potential as to all these things and that its execution is, for the most part, on point. But will it be able to do all it needs to do? Will the market want it? Will other parties share Nintendo's vision? These are questions the next 18 months or so should answer for us.

For Zelda...I am that diehard aLttP fan as I said. I play Zelda because I like that structure and the gameplay associated with it. BotW has me immensely excited. I have trouble sleeping at night. I post too much on GAF and my posts are below even their usual poor quality. Moreover, it is getting unprecedented accolades in this day and age. If anything can convince me that it is okay to break with the past, it seems it should be this game. But I have yet to play it, and this is going to have to be something I experience for myself.

I hope we all fall in love with this game, including myself. It at least should be great, but that really isn't enough for there to be peace in the Zelda fanbase :P.

So are Best Buys doing midnight release for the Wii U version as well? Thinking of going over there tonight in the hopes of snagging one. A game like this just don't feel right to go all digital.

Gorgeous, amazing OP! Thanks for the time and effort! FedEx has my Switch and Zelda, will get here tomorrow, I'm so beyond hyped!

It was a tough choice, but the 98 title would have lost meaning if the score changed.
I think the "Link from the Past" title was a bit less meta :
The 98 title was fucking clever though!

I think tying BotW to OoT makes more sense than LttP, although NES is probably the most appropriate.

but w/e, just a title.

can't wait for amazon to deliver late tomorrow night after I've paced in front of the door for several hours.

The OT is incredible. It really shows how much love went into it.
Anyway, I'm so happy that the game is just a few hours away. I can't wait to get lost in Hyrule and discover amazing things. This game is going to be an incredible journey.

GUYS i just had a realization.

I dont have to stop playing to go to the bathroom.

A AAA title that I can take a shit with and then put it back on the dock and keep playing

WHAT

I won't be able to play this game until tomorrow night at 8pm EST.

27.5 hours to go.

Hahahaha I won't be able to play this untill 8pm Monday night

And I was perfectly okay with that till these ridiculous reviews started coming in.

Haven't been this excited for a console Zelda since Twilight Princess. And I adored Twilight Princess, but this looks like it could be even better.

I stress; 98 hours. :(
