Recusal

What a coincidence that those meetings just happened to conclude today!

Don't let this be the end of it either, because it doesn't really change anything. They're hoping this concession will make it blow over, it's up to people to ensure it won't go away.

Called it. Resignation was a long shot, but he's recusing himself. Hopefully that means he'll appoint a non-partisan attorney to conduct this investigation and not just appoint a deputy to do it, which would still allow him to influence any investigation.

C'mon now. You really think this guy will do the right thing?

Hopefully the press keep the heat on him long enough that the admin convinces him to cut himself loose.

We need him out of there altogether.

Wow. Suddenly he remembers the conversation with the Russian ambassador and the content of that conversation. Amazing what a bombshell report and perjury accusations will do.

Lesson learned:
If you're the top cop in the US, the law doesn't apply to you.
You can lie under oath, and you won't be punished whatsoever!

The law only applies to the poorer folk.

They're doubling down and appeasing. The smartest thing they could've done. If no extra dirt will be dug up, this story is buried.

So, he wants to pick who resides over investigations?
You can't make this shit up.

Yeah. Complete bullshit. And as Senator Schumer said earlier today, these appointees read the transcript of their confirmation hearings. If he thought he gave inaccurate or misleading testimony, he could have corrected it.

Welp. Until the next shoe drops. Back to Horizon Zero Dawn and waiting for the next episode of Pod Save America.

I don't remember the exact wording but I also loved the response he gave about the White House recommending that he not recuse himself, and then he tells the reporter they don't know exactly what ethics he's supposed to operate under.

Basically, Trump and Spicer don't know how anything is supposed to work.

What do you expect next from Russia?

Sessions: Well, there's a danger that they may continue this overreach. They just solidified power in Georgia, in South Ossetia. That was I think in the last week. Pressure is still on Ukraine. We don't know whether the Minsk Agreement will hold, I don't think it's holding very well now. We have the Estonians, the Lithuanians, the Romanians, they're very worried. This is reality, I wish it weren't, but I'm afraid it is. It needs to be clear that Russia knows that there will be a high price to pay if this behavior continues.

I noticed that also, obviously didn't come out the way he wanted

A few months ago, it was reasonable to fear that a pro-Putin president would be presiding over a pro-Putin team — including National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who accepted $40,000to attend a banquet in Moscow with Putin, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was once awarded an Order of Friendship by Putin — and that together they would lift sanctions on Russia, dismantle NATO and let Russia have its way with Eastern Europe. It is not entirely clear why this hasn’t happened, but surely part of the reason is that the Kremlingate scandal has made it impossible for Trump to make "good deals" with Putin as he has said he would love to do.

If Trump were to lift sanctions under the current circumstances, there is a good chance Congress would reimpose them; indeed a bipartisan group of senators has already introduced legislation that would take away presidential discretion in this matter. More than that: If Trump were to lift sanctions after the daily drumbeat of Kremlingate disclosures (including Wednesday’s news that Attorney General Jeff Sessions was not being truthful in denying he had any meetings with Russian representatives), he would be at serious risk of impeachment — if not now, then if and when Democrats regain control of Congress.

Trump for the time being is continuing the existing policy of punishing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. He is also surrounding himself with appointees such as Defense Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster who take a much less benign view of Putin than he does. The National Security Council has just hired as its top Russia hand Fiona Hill, a well-respected scholar at the Brookings Institution who has hard-line view on Putin.

As had been talked about, Russiagate is starting to blow up in Putin's face a bit.
