UGH. :(

I wanted to play using the classic controller on the WiiU version. Since the screen is not in use, the gamepad is just too big and cumbersome.

Anyway, it's a fantastic game. I can't wait to go home and play some more.

You only have the register the horse at one stable to have it brought to you at any stable? And you don't have to return it to the stable for that to work? I didn't know this.

But the fact I didn't know this has led me to do more horseback exploration for fear of abandoning my horse in the middle of nowhere.

I got my horse stuck on a mountaintop somehow. Just went to a stable and took him out. Any registered horse can be taken from any stable at any time.

I mean, you can. When something happens where you need the gamepad, it tells you to switch.

Over 70 professional critics who do this shit for a living have formed a strong consensus, and you all are out here looking for "grounded" reviews as if the entire landscape of gaming critics can't possibly be trusted. Sometimes things are universally loved, it's ok to accept that.

the best part is OT's are usually far from grounded especially first week.

Yes, talk to the white-haired painter guy. He wanders around the world, mostly on villages and stables.

All of them are hinted by the painter guy you encounter in stables and villages
I found him at a stable for one memory, but he is just staying in Kakariko village now and won't tell me anything about them. I have three memories now if that makes a difference.

Yes! Finally figured out how/when to parry guardians.
Pressing A when the blue "charging light" shows up right before the laser shoots

Also, regarding diamond
you can sell 10 luminous stones to the Zora for a diamond how many times you like! It wasn't just a side quest!

Don't need to know what it is but am I still supposed to not have the last rune by the time the game basically says go anywhere?

No secret about it, filled with charm and little details. Probably the best npcs in the series outside Majora's Mask.

Agreed - possibly even better. All of the children are so adorable and well-written.

I was amazed that divorce has invaded my fantasy realm of Hyrule. I already saw two explicit mentions of it. Even in the face of Calamity Ganon, people still have their crap to deal with.

Any shield? I thought that only worked with the guardian shield.

You perfect shield parry with any shield (have shield out and press A at the right time to parry the laser).

Is that the exact timing? I've done it a few times after seeing the blue circle but results have been mixed

It works on the walking guardians except it takes 3 parries to kill them whereas stationary guardians will die in one

That is what I use to time it. Different players will probably use different signals/timing that works for them.

lol same didn't even think of killing the guardians

Talking about this tower... I tried to head to the shrine at the castle's outskirt but there are these drone + guardians patrolling... still debating if I should go for it

I climbed it pretty early on, couldn't have killed them even if I wanted to.

V. excited about the conversation between a confused cheeseburger and a pancake burglar.

Anyhow, you're both spot on. The NPCs, the dialogue, the writing generally -- top notch. Spare use of V.O. is really effective too. Quality is a bit uneven perhaps but it always feels momentous to hear something spoken aloud.

Last night, I completed the
Great Plateau and received the Paraglider from King Rhoam. Next stop, Kakariko Village
.

Loving this game!

I love fighting the
Lynel.
I go fight it for fun. It's my favorite enemy. I wish there was a fast-travel to the peak.

There's one in the
coliseum just outside of the starting plateau
, as well as the field just past the
gate at the base of Mount Lanayru that can be seen in the Shiekah Slate memories
. I agree, they're so damn fun to fight. Pro tip - backflips are the key, here. Guaranteed rush attack.

I learned to parry lasers with... lets say other thing. Same laser, its considered a projectile so the timing changes a bit with distance. But if yoi can position yourself at a similar distance every time then it should work.

My favorite mini-VO are the great fairies and the Gerudo. I love how they say their little greeting line.

Question

What makes this game better than other open world current gen games?

ive gave up on non-nintendo systems after the Ps3. I didnt like the games, the style, so i decided to be nintendo only with the WiiU and 3ds. And it worked so fine i even ignore the existence of games on other systems

And now im playing zelda and to me its (unless my memory betray me) the best game ive ever played in my life. Im 50 hours in already. Since friday

But is Zelda BOTW different from other open world games from PS4 and Xbox1? How? Because i know there´s a lot of those in these systems...
For me, BOTW is the first open-worlder that doesn't feel like a "connect the dots" affair, going from waypoint to waypoint, sidequest to sidequest, collectible to collectible, looking at a map with hundreds of markers on it, etc. While at a very high level, you're doing those things, the manner in which you're doing them, and the freedom which you have to do it, feels different and so much more organic and natural than anything I've ever played. I also like that the game more or less gives you everything you need to solve virtually every puzzle in the game within the first few hours, so it's essentially you vs. the world from that point forward instead of always focusing on what you need to do next to gain access to the next tool. That's a huge, huge change for Zelda, and it also makes it unique among open world games as well. Also, almost always, going off the beaten path to explore something results in a reward or something you weren't expecting, which is just the best feeling.

Man, this game and a new baby do not mix well. So much to do and discover it's almost overwhelming to play in the short bursts I get.

Had it since Friday and still haven't finished the first four shrines. Stuck because
I can't make it up the snowy mountain without dying. I'm looking for boar to hunt to get meat so make the recipe that gets me the cold weather coat from the old man, but can't find any more.

Seeing my 8 year old daughter understand this games mechanics is just awesome. We are playing separate saves, so I can help steer her in a general correct location. She's done the 4 shrines. Having her read the item descriptions, she thought up(on her own) that she should mix the peppers with something to get to the last shrine in the opening area. I felt very proud of her.

We are taking our time, as there's no big rush.

My favorite mini-VO are the great fairies and the Gerudo. I love how they say their little greeting line.

Speaking of the Gerudo, does anybody know when/why they use their different greetings (Sava'Saaba, Sav'Orq, etc)? It's a really cool touch that makes their culture feel real.

Sometimes you just gotta
sit by a campfire and wait a few hours for things to respawn
.

you dont
need the coat, you can cook the spicy peppers with other food and get the warmth that way

There are other ways to get up the mountain without dying. I never knew that you could get warm weather gear from the old man and I made it up just fine.

Still haven't got an answer on this, but is there a new game plus? If not, one needs to be added. Love to start a new game with materials and armor sets.

And here I am using bombs every time, never thinking about a hammer. This game!!

There's probably pros/cons to both methods. Mining ore off of mountainsides with bombs frequently ends up with the rewards blowing straight off the cliffs. If hammers are less "messy", that may be something to consider.

haha, that was a weird misunderstanding. I said "Point of Interest" because i was too lazy to write and spoiler tag
great fairy fountain

You mean the "memory", right? That one's rather easy to find as well, though. You have to have activated the respective quest first, though. (Talking to
impa
once you upgraded your sheikah slate) Otherwise there'll be no 'marker' that triggers the memory.
When you move to the east there's a similar kind of
gate
as in the photo, then there's a water filled canyon with plenty of enemies, further east, you'll see another such structure ahead of the plains west of the snowy peak.

(again, i'm assuming we're talking about that 'point of interest' right now)

Thanks!! I did find it last night....it was just way further than I thought. 1 memory down 11 to go!

Split Joy-Cons, man! I don't want to AT ALL compare having a new baby and having a needy puppy, but I'm gonna do it anyways - I hope you don't take offense! But my dog will constantly paw at my hands when he wants attention, so I'm able to kind of cradle him and still play comfortably lol. He then falls asleep and it's so cute, but sometimes the rumble wakes him up.

I guess I could just train him better too... :P

Don't forget that you can cook things that will help with various resistances. Check your inventory... you probably have some stuff that will work. :)
