So this is fun. Chuck a metallic box at an enemy encampment then shoot it with a lightning arrow for a fun time!

Also, you can use magnesis to use the box as a shield against ranged dudes, place it in front of you, and then, if you have a thunder weapon or rod just whack the box to damage and stun them, giving you time to rush in and take them down.

I feel like I'm learning new stuff every time I play.

Wouldn't it be easier to just smash them with the box?

Learn to get over it. I have about 15 weapons that are all good now, but that came with a lot of breaking. The good news is, if you have a great weapon and are killing great enemies, they usually drop a decent weapon.

I feel like a greedy dragon sleeping on a pile of gold. I want all the good stuff to myself. Meanwhile, I'm throwing sticks and clubs at enemies lol.

This is the first time in days that I'm going to go home from work and not know what I'm going to do next in the game.

I guess I could rush through the last 2 dungeons, but I still feel like there is stuff to do.

On another note, does anyone know a good way of finding the painter NPC who tells you where memory locations are? I only have 2 more to get, but I can't track down the painter now. He's still in Kakoriko, but he doesn't tell me anything when I talk to him there.

He seems to have disappeared from every other stable I have found him at.

Am I a dumbass or is there anything more to combat. Can I dodge roll and party or is it simply just jumping swinging and walking sideways?

What's funny is that the combat tutorial shrine doesn't really come until you go to a certain village....... and even that's optional....

The more I play the game, the more I come to realize the best point of comparison for the weapon degredation isn't RPGs like The Witcher 3. I really hate the idea of weapon degredation that is simply solved with inventory items and trips back to town. At that point, it really does feel like it's just wasting my time.

I think the better point of comparison is Halo, honestly. The gameplay loop of "grab cool weapon > enjoy using cool weapon for a brief amount of time > break cool weapon and pickup/switch to something different", is very similar to the Halo loop of running out of ammo, and swapping it for whatever gun you can pickup from an enemy. It doesn't feel, to me, like it's wasting my time at all, but encouraging me to think dynamically and try a variety of weapons.

Somebody said that the official guide says the more powerful versions of enemies appear as you defeat more of that enemy. So if you kill lots of Moblins, the Moblins you find will more frequently be the more powerful versions.

Does this effect silver enemies?
My understanding is that (for example) if you kill a blue Lynel, after the next Blood Moon, it can be replaced by a White Lynel.

You can only cook basic stuff that way though. Making dishes which increase your resistances is out. Those are often the ones you need most when in a bind somewhere out there!

Ya that's true. I like the idea of cooking pots being limited because it makes them an extremely valuable resource in the world.

While making my way toward Doom Mountain through Akkala I remember taking a detour to murder a bunch of monster folk specifically because I saw them cooking shit in a cooking pot and I was like "I need to cook time for murder".

Gerudo Spoilers:

The
Yiga Hideout
was a lot of fun. Its hilarious that
these murderous thugs are bananas for..well, bananas.
I especially loved fighting the boss. Really fun boss battle and it had that trademark Nintendo charm and humor.

I laughed way harder than I should have at
Master Kohga rubbing his eyes despite wearing a mask.
He's just so goofy.

"The constellations are the key"

Fiddling around here for minutes trying to do something with the balls.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Help me out here guys. The constellations don't seem to be helping me.

The secret best feature is that the game prioritizes picking up crafting materials over weapons

It knows what it's about

"you probably have 5 of these swords so here's what you're really here for"

I'm legit way more excited when I find a hearty truffle than when I find a Flamebrand.

Ummm, what pictures are you missing? I still only unlocked like 5 but 2 of them I just found them by looking at the pictures and using some landmarks in them

It looked he was
rubbing the one eye in the center of the mask.
I thought that was hilarious.

I wish there was an armor that gives a permanent speed boost. Like the bunny hood in Majora's Mask. Yes, there's the ninja set bonus but I hate walking around at night because of the Stalfos shenanigans.

Bunny Hood for faster base speed, and Pegasus Boots for increased sprint speed.

Two armor pieces I'd never take off

The game feels like such an incredible adventure.

The most beautiful thing is that venturing out into a new area or path feels open and refreshing, but also expertly designed. It's a huge trek through new areas and all kinds of surprises when you set off towards a new goal. It feels so epic and rewarding.

Just a masterful approach to an open world, hot damn.

Yup. Reminds me of being a kid playing Ocarina of Time. OoT was a huge adventure when it launched, as is this one. The first village seems like it has so much detail. I spent a couple of hours just exploring the village.

So much to do, so much going on and so much still to see. I've played nearly 20 hours and have yet to even see a dungeon.

Good post, I agree with that a lot.

I came across a beautifully designed section of gameplay last night.

I'm looking for a memory and it leads me to this canyon place where there's various enemies along the path.

If you play normally, you walk forward in the canyon and will come across various enemy placements. At one point, I crossed a large portion of water using the ice towers in order to get to a shrine (fuck swimming). When I exited the shrine, I started going back the same way I came in (traveling across the water), but then realized that I was being silly and could just climb to a higher platform and then glide across the entire section to get back to the main path.

Once back on the main path, I came across several battles, but utilized stealth via the climb and glide mechanics (and the absolutely wonderful
sheikah
gear, which has a stealth buff that took me a while to figure out how to use (just run normally... consuming stamina will body the buff))... stealth killed all the remaining encounters after this.

Like, it didn't occur to me to just use the geography to my advantage earlier and I was just running into battles normally.

I felt like this canyon section was just a shining example of how flexible the game allows you to be with regards to playstyle: do you like stealth? We've designed enough stuff for you to climb on and glide from during the enemy encounters, so go ahead. Do you like rushing forward? All the enemies will drop weapons that will allow you to actually beat all the encounters in a reasonable amount of hits, so feel free to mash buttons.

I can't remember the last time I had such a large amount of options in an action game that were largely fun to do.

Maybe Hitman? But 47 can't climb random walls or glide :v

(in particular, slow motion from glide arrow shooting is the best and I should use it more)

I feel like, in order to make the above stuff work, you have to put work in and design it properly... otherwise, it feels like a random mess, but I never get this impression whenever I come across enemy compositions with respect to the geography: it honestly feels like Nintendo took a lot of time to make sure to design each encounter, which is amazing considering how fucking big the game is.

Ummm, what pictures are you missing? I still only unlocked like 5 but 2 of them I just found them by looking at the pictures and using some landmarks in them

One looks like a castle, I'm pretty sure this is obviously inside Hyrule castle. The other is just showing a forest path and a lot of trees around. There are like no landmarks in the picture I can go off of, like the other ones. I've tried just going off the trees in the picture and then going to forest's on the map that have those kinda of trees, but haven't had any luck.

All that I'm saying is that having a recipe book feels like a feature that should've been included in the game. If you take a look at a game like Dragon Quest IX, it does this perfectly by telling you what you have and what you could make out of it from all of the other ingredients in your inventory.

I wouldn't mind one that saves your ingredients from what you've already figured out, but hell no to one that gives it away simply based on what you have. If anything, cooking could use more depth. I hate that people are always trying to dumb down games nowadays.

Kind of wish they didn't tell you exactly where the 4 main objectives are located. It ruins the fun of coming across it on your own. The NPC's near seem to tip you off anyways.

Does the Blood Moon revive Guardians?

Because they really really want you hear Zelda's terrible English voice acting.
It really baffles my mind - can't anyone at Nintendo tell that Zelda (and few other characters which I came across so far) are fucking awful?? They need to fire their voice director.

I finally left the plateau yesterday after lots of putzing around and I just can't stop thinking about my experience and I wanted to just relay it here. I basically just picked a direction at random (because I didn't want to go where directed) which wound up being southwest. So this is all spoilerific for the Gerudo (desert) region. To an extent, none of this may be anything special on its own, especially if you know the region already, but I can't believe how much there was to do right off the bat and how cool it was to just stumble onto everything.

I pinned and headed for what turned out to be the Wasteland Tower. As it happens, seemingly everything in this region can oneshot me. :P Undeterred, with lots of climbing, I get up the tower.

I spin around and HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT IN THE DISTANCE. Some kind of absolutely gigantic, legit Shadow-of-the-Colossus style mechanical llama stomping around the desert. At this point, I have no clue what this thing is and I was instantly way more invested in the game's world than I was up to that point. That sensation of seeing something exciting and then wanting to play more to learn about it, rather than being told something exciting exists and then playing until you finally see it... completely enthralling. Felt like the old days.

Way in the distance by this thing I see what looks like an oasis and toss a pin in that. After a little ways I run into the Gerudo Canyon Stable. There's a Rito bird bard there, and he wants to sing me a song. It's the legend of Calamity Ganon and the Divine Beasts. I recognize one of them as clearly the robot llama I saw from the tower. Awesome.

I get closer to my pin and see a little oasis bazaar on the way. As I approach a cutscene is triggered and I get some gorgeous views of the Giant Robollama. It's kicking up sandstorms and lightning follows it everywhere. That can't be good. Talking to the folk at the bazaar, it turns out this thing was supposed to defend the area but it's going crazy and making the area more dangerous. The sandstorms are affecting trade, the noise is driving guests away from the inn. You can tell everyone is kind of talking about it in annoyed terms of how it impacts their daily lives; they don't care about Ganon or my epic quest, they have their own problems.

I'm pointed toward Gerudo Town which turns out to be the pin I placed from the tower, but with an unexpected caveat- men aren't allowed inside! Sounds like a challenge. Flashbacks to Wall Market in FF7 hit me immediately. So I start scoping it out. Navigating the desert is dangerous- especially for a rookie adventurer like me without a stockpile of elixirs, but I discover that just literally waiting for the right time of day can make it possible (about 6:00-8:00PM and 4:00-6:00AM seem safe!). A second of real time is a minute of game time. The entryways of shrines are seemingly climate-controlled and always safe to wait around. I discover the unbridled joy of Sand Seals to make getting around easier... awesome again.

Bouncing between the bazaar and the gates of Gerudo Town and talking to everyone I start to hear that some dude has succesfully made it inside. One merchant describes a "pretty Hylian girl" that has been seen around and new dialogue options open to ask about her to the others at the bazaar. I piece it together and eventually known where she winds up at the right time of day. Finally meet "her" and she'll sell me the clothes- for 600 rupees.

Undeterred, now I'm a desert merchant myself for a bit, scrounging what I can to save up and get a dress to fake being a girl and get into Gerudo Town. About a third of the way there. Screw my slated destiny, I am going to see the inside before I do anything else in this game, damnit. Then maybe I'll see about taking care of this giant Divine Beast.

...then maybe I'll actually go to the first quest marker.

And the silly thing is I've explored maybe 20% of the total region. It's such a rich, compelling and fleshed-out area and I can't believe it was all just there waiting for me to check out whenever I felt like it, and I just happened to choose "right away." All of this on its own might actually be pretty standard RPG fare- I'm reminded a lot of Skies of Arcadia as well- but that's just it. This isn't an RPG, this was just the direction I randomly chose in an open-world action adventure. I wasn't told to go here but I wasn't discouraged from it either, and while maybe I wasn't meant to see this stuff yet (I've died plenty)... if even a single other region in the game is up to this standard I'd think we are definitely dealing with a masterpiece.

Is this bit in the actual game?

Pretty sure that part never existed in-game but was a target render. Glad the game is out so we have definitive confirmation and I can stop hearing "Dude you don't know that, we haven't seen the whole map yet." ¬_¬
