1992 was the last time this series succeeded in any of its storytelling goals, and that "success" was a broken, fucked up little thing that only managed to survive its studio meddling through whatever residual strengths of Fincher's survived the edit, along with Weaver's (at the time) swan song (literally) performance.

Everything since then has been either total self parody (Resurrection, AvP 1 & 2) or confused, indulgent, dumb-as-fuck grasping at profundity (Prometheus).
People will point to Isolation, but even that only succeeds because it's a game, and can rely on atmosphere and immersion in a way none of the films can. The story of Isolation isn't good, and isn't executed all that well on top of that, either. It's a so-so Dark Horse Comic "what-if" that you get to run through in first person.
It's one of my favorite games ever because of how amazing that atmosphere and immersion is. But the story is tertiary to why it works.
