The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT2| It's 98 All Over Again

Completed the main quest. That was pretty awesome, loved the final few sequences. People looking for Dark Souls won't find it. People looking for traditional Zelda dungeons won't find it either. Hyrule Castle has pretty awesome "secrets" and was pretty interesting to explore. I wonder how many alternative scenes are available depending on what. you did in game. When the ending scenes were playing I had an idea of what I really want for the DLC story, but it probably won't be that. I need to get back to life a little bit but I'll definitely be exploring the remaining regions I haven't really combed through yet.

Ended up with 22.7% completion rate, can't tell how many hours I've put in :(.

How are you guys finding the controls with the Joycons, together and split?

Thinking of buying a Switch, but not sure if a Pro controller would be worth it just for Zelda alone.

I love how link can be an asshole in some sidequests, like
the one outstide the gerudo city, with the guy trying to hit on you when you're dressed like a girl....

-give me your boots...
- huh... okay, but i'll have nothing to wear
-give them....
- ok sure, do you think after that we could...
- just no way!

not sure if the dialogue is the same in english

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to take pictures of each one.

i'm so dumb, why didn't i think of that? Was writting it on a piece of paper like old times! :P

Every joycon option is ok (I like split most), but the pro controller dwarfs all. It's by far the best way to play this game. I'd say if you end up loving Zelda, get a pro controller asap.

It is to be honest. The controls are flawless with the Pro controller. I'm played maybe 10% of the game in handheld mode and couldn't wait to get home to play in docked most of the time.

Joycons work great.Takes a bit to get use to cause the analog sticks are smaller than normal, but they function well.

Game has horrible motion control puzzles though.

Actually, speaking of the
Yiga section,
has anyone tried to just sail from
Gerudo Tower to cliffs and then run and glide into the yard with the hole?
I wondered that as soon as I saw it was outdoors.

yes,
nothing happens. there's a rock slate covering the front and back door of their hideout that can't be bombed and that big hole goes nowhere, link just falls and then re-spawns back up top minus some health

I used to respect jim but after this review I can no longer.

He is just not fair here, complaining about stuff that is a non issue and infact enhances gameplay. wtf is he smoking?

that being said.

I FUCKING LOVE this game, its the best game I have ever played. most polished and the best open world game to date, nothing comes even close. this open world is living like no other.

I am so happy i paid for a switch to play this, will sell my switch once im done with breath of the wild.

It's probably best to just drop it. If you don't like his reviews, then don't pay them any mind going forward. Personally, I expected him to give it a lower score anyhow, especially as late as it was, but there's no reason to keep giving it negative attention or any at all if you disagree.

I really have no problems with the joycons on the joycon grip, although it felt a bit weird at first. I will end up buying a pro controller but mostly for the dpad, although I'm worried some people say it's actually not that good of a dpad.

i've been fairly inactive in the zelda threads because well, i've been playing it, but also... i haven't really been feeling it. i was sort of expecting something good, and the reviews kind of threw me off. the marketing too. it feels a lot like ocarina of time in that it's a pretty simple game in terms of narrative, and i understand why it was done that way. however it lack urgency in a way that ocarina of time was really good at, and the way the story unfolds is a sort of ho-hum thing (with a lot of it being done in the past).

i get it from a game design perspective, but it's a major issue i am having that i wish could be solved in a future title. a majora's mask-like where they take the engine/assets and make a new game but around a specific idea. hell, maybe the ability to time travel in specific areas for puzzle purposes, but also ways that move the story along would have been more impactful than a memory collectathon. so instead of watching a cutscene, there's more context for link to be there, where he is sort of inhabiting his past self. it could have made some moments more dramatic
like the impossible fight against the swarm of guardians.

that aside, i've played the game for about 30 hours, and yesterday was pretty good. i collected the memories and activated the towers first, which given me context for the world and characters, and allows me to jump wherever i want to if i feel like i've already explored an area. as a result, i've been uncovering all sorts of things and i can't wait to go back in.

the other elements of the game are really solid - and i like the weapon durability a lot. in a fight against one of the main story bosses, i ran out of everything i had, which resulted in tossing bombs to win the day. big fights feel like desperate struggles in a way that classic video games were known for. i also really dig the music, as sparsely used as it is. whenever the breath of the wild theme comes in, it just adds to the experience, and i take the time to slow down and take a look around. in essence, this is the game that i had imagined ocarina of time was when i was a kid - a big outdoors adventure with secrets everywhere. and that's great.

Cool. Have to check it out then.

What's the best weapons you've gotten from a Hinox?
I'm about 60 hours in but have done almost none of the actual story. Last couple fights had a knight claymore(26). I got a couple knight bows as well. I'm pretty much using them as fight fodder to supplement my higher level weapons like element rods, yiga, and shrine drops. Giant boomerang is legit.

I've been playing through on the joycons together on the grip. It's totally fine once you get used to their size, although I'm sure the Pro controller is more optimal. I just didn't feel like dropping yet another $70 for what is still just one game.

I have no problems playing with joycons using the grip or on the sides of the Switch in portable mode. I tried split controllers but they are so small and its hard to get a good hand grip, its a mess as soon you need to reach certain buttons.

I guess pro controller is worth it for the future anyway but I have no need for it playing Zelda myself.

i bought the pro controller but haven't used it. right now, it's something i'm saving for multiplayer, because the joycons are surprisingly awesome split. i haven't even used the grip at all since i like it so much.

Cheers guys

Will give it a go with the Joycons first I think, should at least control well enough for me to then order a Pro if I want one and carry on playing until it arrives

exactly this. I'll stop paying my patreon stuff towards him and thats it. no need to call him names or something like that.

sad tho, that we'll have to change the OT name >>

Yep. This game is the GOAT.

Kinda nuts how the same series can claim this title so many times lol.

I'm not at the ridiculous point of saying I don't wanna play anything else, but when I'm playing it, that's all I want to do.

I can't think of a game that has done in a while.

Really like Jim and have always respected his views, its never possible to agree with another person all the time

But when he gives Tri-force heroes 80 and Breath of the Wild 70 it's click bait and down to his dislike of their business practises

I totally get that, and it's obvious that he's decided to buck from the norm and score it badly to make the point, but it's come across as petty

I knew after playing the game that guys like Jim and Jeff Gerstman would absolutely hate the durability and stamina mechanics.

And if they significantly impact your enjoyment I can see someone giving the game an 7 or 8.

I love how now that most people who want to have played enough of it to form their own views are basically responding to Sterling's review with

Huh. Well that wasn't worth the money.
I'd heard that buying the house gave you somewhere to store your weapons. I was not aware it was only for a SINGLE WEAPON. I figured I could just put a bunch of my powerful weapons in there. Only one is like what's the point? Oh well.

Talk to
the guys again

are there any hidden caves or underground tunnels to explore, or are shrines all there is?

There's at least a few, but they're not distinct / instanced like entering a shrine, it's just part of the overworld map. The
Forgotten Temple
is short but pretty cool, especially if you found it by approaching from the East.

What makes the elemental rods good? The range is nice, but they always seem to be weaker than other weapons.

Also, I got REALLY good drops from
Molduga.
Two Royal Claymores (52) and 2 Knight's Shields (40).

I love playing with 'em split. It's like wii mote nunchuck without the wire. My arms feel so freeeeeee!

Link is a diiiiiiiiick in this, a lot of his dialog options seem arseholish lol

Not gonna bother to talk to them again?

Holy shit.

I'm god knows how many hours in and I found another town, I thought I found every town
including lurelin village

But no, I just found one in the
akkala region

It does kinda feel like he pulled some kinda Armond White thing because of his beef with Nintendo.

The easiest way to get back some decent weapons if you're out, is taking out Hinox.
They're carrying around Royal weapons, often times with good bonuses.
The blue ones, at least, also go down in like 5-10 arrows with a Duplex.

The Master Sword is 30 attack if it is not drawn in proximity of Ganon's corruption.

Check all four corners of the city. In one corner tucked away there is a little girl who is trying to grow a garden. It's easy to miss.
thanks, but already did that

Yeah now i don't even take that review seriously lol. Triforce Heroes above BotW? Yeah no way. No mental gymnastics can out explain that one.

BotW is leagues above triforce heroes that it ain't even funny to compare the 2.

If it was Hyrule Warriors with a higher score i can accept that because that game was pretty awesome but triforce heroes is a meh spinoff.

I do question someones taste in games if they think that game deserves a higher score than any mainline zelda game.

You can store a max of three weapons, bows, and shields

Just dominated a major test of strength. Took 3-4 strong weapons breaking (including a strong ass sword I snuck out of hyrule castle) but only lost a heart or two with poor movement on a couple vertical slices from the guardian. Once you know the patterns of the test guardians it's pretty easy.

The amount of people who take personal affront to reviews worry me. It is a review by a critic. Not everyone will like what you like etc. Ignore it and move forward. Them giving it a low review will not impact how you enjoy the game. I didn't like Majoras Mask at all when it first released and I bet if I was a reviewer and not a kid then, I would have probably given it a 6/10. I played it again older and came to appreciate the time mechanic and what they actually achieved with the gameplay.

I play with them split all the time its wonderful, almost never use the grip, occasionally played connected to th system, have but have not used the pro controller.

I could easily se someone liking Triforce Heroes more. TH and BotW are so radically different that one could easily like the former more than the latter.

I don't take offense to it, but at the same time, opinions are definitely open to criticism, too. I mean, that's kind of a major part of being a reviewer and giving yourself a platform to elevate your opinions. Criticism comes with the territory.

There are hidden loot areas, too. I found one near
the gerudo desert tower, for example. I had to use a magnetic boulder to knock other boulders out of the way to enter it
.

I hope that future titles return to the old formula of hiding heart pieces in the overworld. I like the shrines for the most part, but the lack of heart pieces is disappointing, especially for a game that's already as fun to explore as BotW is.
