I'd think it has to do with context, whether the word has an established new meaning that is distinct from the old one, and whether there is a new alternative for the old word. "Autistic" is pretty specific, still in medical vocabulary and I'm not aware of good alternative expressions for the original meaning.
If "lame" or "retarded" are considered to never be appropriate to describe disability in humans (I think they are?), in a sense that frees them up to be used in the new meanings that have developed for them, since they more clearly no longer refer to the disabled. People don't reply to "Ugh, Sarah is so lame" with "What do you mean, she seems to walk just fine?" because the new meaning of the word is sufficiently distinct from the original. Many people who use these words specifically won't use them in contexts when they could be misunderstood as intending the original meaning, eg. if Sarah actually had a bum leg in addition to being a boring person.
I remember Destiny for a couple of things in the early Starcraft II days, but his Retard Magnet strategy was particularly funny. You can't tell me with a straight face that people should take that bit as a knock on developmentally disabled people.

I got into him through that podcast too and I still think he was faking it in that show to piss off Maddox. His book was absolutely satire - he's called it himself satire many many times - and has lines about what a respectable guy Donald Trump is and if a woman was ever president, he'd eat his book. I think he's just publicly keeping up that act, at least when he's "Dick Masterson", not "Dax Herrera".
I once asked Maddox if Dick was just faking it, cause it sounded like he was trying to get dick to break kayfabe calling him out on something he past said regarding trump, and he just liked my comment but didn't reply.

Completely agree, I feel really sad that he seemed like a great dude when I was watching his channel way back when. It's a shame when people disappoint you so badly.
Jon has a platform that allows him to communicate with millions of impressionable people. His job has given him a unique position to talk directly to his audience. If that person is a racist or Nazi it's justified to get upset.
