This is one heck of a generalization. There are no statistics whatsoever on what amount of gamers are this or that (there's really not even a definition on what a gamer is), so calm down. People are acting like the entire (enormous) gaming community is alt-right when it could very well just be a relatively vocal minority. Wouldn't be a the first time a vocal minority gives a bad name to a huge group of people.

Neogaf's population has been screened for this type of shit fairly efficiently. Be careful it doesn't give you a distorted representation of who gamers actually are. For the most part they exhibit similar variance in personality and political views as the rest of the population.

Even with NeoGAF's screening, you still get dozens of neonazis in threads like this. Now extrapolate that for gamer venues with zero screening.

You can't even be openly female as a gamer, otherwise you're opening yourself up for harassment. It's a nightmare.

I don't think the pewdiepie situation is entirely comparable. He made some off brand "jokes", and while that may be seen as in bad taste it was just an attempt at humour (however shitty). Jontron seems to actually believe this shit!

On H3H3, I think he wouldn't defend this. But if he does then he is dumber than even jontron ha.

It's because the right wing has shifted more and more to the right. They've become extremists to the point where anyone who disagrees is a "liberal." And the term liberal has been bastardized into an evil word to them. Now even the less extreme right wing people demonize the word liberal.

People still didn't accept or tried to understand that we live in very dynamic times were population and races are converging drastically in some parts of the world, not just USA.

How can I blame a free, law abiding human being from living right next to me and my native comrades and enjoy life with us?

Like, even if his fans try to defend the comments like immigration as just ignorance, how do you defend the gene pool comment? You can't. That's the biggest damning evidence that Jon isn't just an ignorant guy, he's a full blown racist.

It has a lot to do with gaming on a meta level or whatever. There's such a force within this community specifically to "separate" politics out from games like they're some pure art that can't be tainted by issues of the outside world. In some cases here "politics" can mean feminism or race discussions and gamers get it a fucking tizzy when the sanctity of gaming gets threatened and now we're here.

I actually listened to half of that destiny video. It was fascinating seeing how he was cornered into several points and he either laughed and mumbled a bunch of "um uh um uh"s or he just said something off topic.
 
As a graduate student in criminology writing a thesis on institutional racism within the criminal justice system, boy would I have loved to be the person engaging him in this conversation and providing much needed "citations" to counter his points. This is fucking bullshit.

Like in most sectors the extremists are often the loudest and most obnoxious when given a platform. I do not think gamers are a majority racist. We embrace technology, we embrace diverse and varied leads, even more recently. On MMOs we are shown to be helpful and giving according to studies.

It's extremely sad for me to read all the stuff he spouted in the interview with Destiny. The list in the OP is just...oh man, oh God. I knew about his recent episodes, but I still wanted to keep him among my subscriptions. Yeah, "Keep the artist and the person separated", all that. Unfortunately, I can't try to hide the elephant anymore, subscription removed.

If Jon wants to be anti globalism and be for stronger border control, fine. Those are fair right wing points that can be argued in civil discussion. But why go to such extremes? The right is going to make Jon a victim of PC culture, but what he said is simply ignorant and extreme.

Unless he truly is racist, why just not have reasonable opinions and venture into healthy debate? Why dismiss a lot of your fan base as whiny SJWs and appeal mainly to to the extremists of the right? It's not even a smart business decision even if he believes what he said.

He has a right to free speech and I have the right to unfollow him and unsubscribe. He's going to play victim of PC culture, but if you're going to be controversial, embrace being controversial. Don't play the victim. Free speech doesn't protect you from backlash.

That people are ignoring, willfully or not, the far right's attempts to recruit in online nerd spaces is disheartening, as the only way to find a way to stop this is acknowledge that nerd communities have a problem.
