Mass Effect: Andromeda - EA/Origin Access trial coming March 16th - 10 hour trial

So.. yeah.

I'm about 4-5 hours into the trial, and just landed on
Eos
.

For people who've played farther, does it get better? I get that the facial (and humans overall) stuff is probably not going to change, which is disappointing, especially with how well done the aliens look.

So much oddness in the game though..

Pardon the cropped picture, I was messing with GameDVR:

TAG! You're FROZEN! I didn't understand this one. Is there a paralyze spell or something?

The story is interesting so far, and I really hope it gets better. I have it pre-ordered from Best Buy and will likely just keep it, even though this hasn't blown me away (or even impressed me in any way). The scanning isn't fun, the delay flying between planets is terrible. The (human) faces are terribad. The dialog is OK, not great but.. whatever. Combat is fine, nothing great but not bad. The UI menus are kind of a mess. I still haven't figured out how to put upgrades on my guns.

I will say it definitely feels like a Mass Effect game other than that, for all it's pluses and minuses. I just really hope this is a rough starting point and it gets way better from here. I want this to be an epic and FUN experience.

*crosses fingers*

There are plenty of little MMO style quests. Like the one about a saboteur on the ark, running back and forth between ships forever. Or the silly strike team quests.

Clearly you like the game but to brush everyone's criticisms like this is just childish.

Um. What?

A quest about a saboteur on the station, that requires you to follow their trail and interact in dialogues with 3 NPCs about the situation and make a decision about what to do isn't an 'mmo fetch quest' or a collectathon or any of the other problems people had with DA:I. It's a fucking sidequest. You might as well call literally every side quest that has ever existed in any Mass Effect game an 'mmo quest'.

All you're doing is proving that you have no idea what the problems people had with DA:I actually were.

I'm four hours in and loving it - was totally dreading it based on this thread. Yes, it has typical Bioware "jank" and that shouldn't be excused, but I honestly think it's shaping up to be pretty great. I think what the guy in that Forbes article linked earlier is especially relevant:

You can feel the slow burn with the beginning of this game. So far what I've seen is a good evolution of Mass Effect 2/ Mass Effect 3 side quest design and I can't wait to dig in more, though I might use a huge chunk of the time I have left in trial to play multi. There's a lot to do and I'm looking forward to the final game.

As for the typical Bioware "jank" (by which I mean weird clippy scene transitions etc.), I've actually seen less of it than I did in Inquisition, but it's still typical Bioware jank. I'm thoroughly enjoying myself with it *shrug.gif*

Slow burn is fine, I have no issues with that. But I am starting to fear the other planets will all be very big but also a bit empty and give very little reason to explore. I hope to God they don't go overboard with the scanning on glyphs and then activating terminals and what not but it wouldn't surprise me if this is the case.

In the previous ME games it may have slightly been a slow burn but here right after the prologue it just feels downright boring to me. But again that's all thanks to Eos which is just a goddamn uninteresting and boring ass planet. And I didn't forget what BioWare said about the side quests being more like Witcher 3,but I have yet to see it. Side quests in this trial are nothing special at all. Personally I was never bored at the starting hours of ME, or 2 and 3....but I'm already bored of Eos.

Back and forth between ships forever? That quest took 15 minutes at most. You had to take the tram twice. Really? Was it that inconvenient?

That entire hub was inconvenient and yes because I had to then run back to do the little story mission for Sam and yada yada yada it felt like I spent forever there for meaningless truffles.

Don't get me wrong there is good stuff here but this game doesn't feel ready to be coming out in a couple days, not to mention the incredibly bizarre bugs that have happened to me during cutscenes and in gameplay as well.

I don't know if this was answered, but I bought the game on Origin, have Origin access and yet I can't access the trial. It keeps saying pre load on March 17 and I can't find anywhere the option of the Trial. Can anybody help? Thanks!

Under the trial access page, try switching the 'version' of the game to something other than what you purchased - i.e. the deluxe, super deluxe, standard - the download button should pop up.

Animations are fine, faces are mostly fine, like what a crock of shit all of the tryhard hate posts are.

Lol. Yep, clearly every animation seen in the GIF thread is 'just fine'. I respect that you don't seem to take issue with 'em, more power to you, but to say they're 'fine' compared to something like ME1, much less something like the Witcher 3, is more 'edgelord' than a lot of the tryhards, I'd say.

How was that quest different from most Citadel side quests, for example?

MP seems really fun, my first ME MP. But, good lord is it ugly and jerky. Looking forward to a smoother, prettier experience on the Pro. Really hoping the network stuff gets worked out, because it's fun.

It isn't, and that's the problem they didn't get rid of the tedious parts of the previous games nor streamline them and it's also an issue from dragon age. It's good to have riveting content but that doesn't mean it should be tedious.

And the tram destination selection is just so dumb. Why couldn't they have a select button of some sort? The aiming and holding y is so awful. That's what my reaction to a lot of the game is, why did they do this thing this way?

This trial has an end point? When is that?

I've just got to Eos and met Peebee.

I'll be vague, but It 'ends' after doing the 3 tasks for PB and going to the place after that.

The game just doesn't let you progress, though - you can still explore Eos and whatever else is currently available.

So quests should involve doing nothing, but with an info dump?

Glad to see more grounded and reasonable impressions starting to pop up. Keep'em coming. Beats the hell out of those scorching hot takes based on 15 minutes of stream footage and circle jerks around the most egregious animation/graphical glitches people can find.

that character is stuck in the default animation. Pretty much every game model in every game has that default animation. That NPC got locked into it. Happens sometimes in every game

Mass Effect came out 10 years ago, though and the citadel was probably the worst part of that game. Well it's why I shelved it for ages before going back and completing it.

Well, now it's coming down to subjectivity. I've always loved the sociopolitical involved with side quests.

I'm just not sure what you'd them to be expect otherwise? And remember, you don't have to do them!

Literally nobody who actually wants to play Mass Effect has a problem with side quests existing (and would probably be pissed if they didn't).

Yeah that's fair, when I went back to ME I found them interesting at least. This isn't really interesting, but I mean I'm having the exact same thoughts as I did with the first game. Just ten years later and now I hold the first dear to my heart. So maybe ill end up there again!

What? Citadel is regarded by a lot of ppl as the best part of ME series.
Cool. That's why my post was about me.

Make them more interesting than "run here scan this run here scan that oh look it's a quest let's keep scanning"

Don't be obtuse, I'm a long time mass effect fan that was hoping they had improved on the issues of the series. Doesn't look like it happened.

I feel bad for the person making the OP. They're going to get nothing but trash for at least the first five pages.

Someone should take the RLM "Endless Trash" gif and replace all of the movie posters with the memes getting posted ad nauseam.

I mean, I just don't know how to satisfy what you are asking for. It's the story behind the quest that makes it interesting or not. Outside of combat, it's either go talk to somebody, go find something, or go kill somebody. You seem to dislike the actions in these quests, what is your alternate proposal? Tedious implied to me that you didn't want to have to go to too many different locations, which is why I just suggested you stand there and have the story spoon fed to you, which solves your problem of taking mundane actions like walking places and discovery people/objects.

Are you serious with this comparison? YOU SCAN THREE THINGS. You have 3 conversations. What is bullshit about that?

I'm not the games developer or designer so I don't have any ideas off the top of my head but so far the quests in Andromeda don't fix the issues of the previous games which was one of their stated goals, no?

You are being so overly hostile that I don't really want to continue talking with you. Goodbye.

He(She)'s right, though. Really don't understand the consternation over this side mission.

Well it certainly sounds like at the least, in the early going, the side quests aren't MMO-style collect-six-power-canister jobs that everyone hated in Inquisition.

There's one thing I'm really struggling with: holster and weapon menu on the select button on the Xbone controller. Makes more sense on the PS4, as you'd use your right thumb, but removing my thumb from the movement stick to holster feels soo clunky.

I feel the disappointing thing about what I've seen of Andromeda is that it's just more humanoids, only...bone headed. A new galaxy felt like an opportunity for some weird shit, making the other Ark aliens a beacon of familiarity in a hostile and confusing new place. Hopefully there's some bizarre somethings yet to be revealed. Kind of how the reapers and the arachnid whatsits helped expand the possibility space of the original trilogy.

Fingers crossed that new Star Wars game is an exciting adventure to the weirder dive bars of a far away galaxy.

I mean their posts are strangely aggressive. It's a pretty shitty quest, not game breaking or annoying. Just not very good, it's not exactly painting a great picture of the game going forward.

Yeah there are some baffling control choices made for this game.

Yeah that feels bad. Was it like this in the other games?

It's not this one in particular though it really annoyed me. It's just overall it really doesn't feel like they have improved the issues of the previous 3 games in all the ways they should have.

Yeah instead it's scan random thing and turn on the power. Just got the nomad though let's hope it gets better.

For those saying the MP maps are too small, I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. I'm sure within a few weeks we will have free DLC maps that are much better.

Expected a lot more from a ME game. So far has been okay with some good moments in it, but that's about it... still haven't had a "wow" moment and I've played around 4 hours or so. I'm glad I used the trial because I don't think this game is good enough for day one.

I don't like the scanning. It feels unessential most of the time, but I found myself pressing G to check the area for scannable things just in case. When there are scannable things they don't feel meaningful. At least in Witcher 3 it was used mostly to find footprints or bloodstains etc, not random bits of furniture or other objects. It also had the extra use of finding lootable things, whereas ME:A's scanner doesn't seem to do that. W3's was also a lot less intrusive, click once, then let go when you're done.

And Ryder's movement is so slow during it.

Also, why is it Y to get into the nomad but pressing Y again takes you back to the tempest? Instead you press B to get out which it never tells you...?

The multiplayer is nonfunctional. It keeps cycling host, DC and rubber banding people all around. I guess this is why they haven't showed much of it.
