Toukiden 2 |OT| Action Hunting Gameplay Feat. Open World

Is that wise?
Switching pre-orders or going with Naginata XD

Reading ME:A impression thread made me hesitant about picking it up day 1 i mean i am going to play it definitely but after they fix the issues especially the online ones which is a great opportunity/excuse for me to play Toukiden 2 to death like i did with Toukiden Kiwami

I feel like this would be a good idea. ME will probably get a GOTY edition with some DLC to finish up the package down the line while this is probably going to have a larger MP player base at launch.

As someone who played most of the first game solo I can say the AI is decent but for farming purposes you still want allies who know what to prioritize.

My dilemma is which platform to get it on. Is there crossplay on sony platforms? Crossbuy or at least discount?

Thanks for the OT. I was almost 100% Chain and Sickle in the last game, but I think I should switch up this time. Mostly because the great thing about the C&S was it's mobility and now the demon hand almost makes it redundant. See you in the Midlands!

Why Open World, I wonder??

Anyways.. I liked the first so I'll probably give a shot to this one as well.

Do we know what exactly Open World means, in this case?

Honestly the only thing that has me really worried is the lack of returning characters. From the website it seems we will only see 2 characters from Toukiden Kiwami (Hatsusho and Soma.)

Though I imagine they probably don't want to bring too many of them in as then the question probably becomes: "Where's the player character from the original?"

Most games in the Hunting genre play out on either one big map or a map full of small zones. Regardless these maps are always seperate from one another. However in Toukiden 2, you can actually walk from one map to the next without any loading screens.

And that's it? You still have one or multiple hubs where you don't fight but just manage stuff and accept missions and multiple maps where said missions are played?

If that's the case I am not sure I would have called it open world.

Did they remove the block for the Kusarigama? I remember being able to block a manhunter's spin attack in the first game but can't do it in the demo for 2.

I have to say the game seems pretty unimpressive on the Vita and after playing the first and Kiwami for a couple hundred hours I'm not sure if I want to jump into the sequel.

Well you can accept missions which will teleport you to the areas. That works just like how it did in the original. However you can just leave the village and just go exploring. There's even a day-night system in place and you will find NPCs out in the wilderness as well with quests.

Thus far, all of the main story stuff happens in the open world. You can even use portal stones to teleport to safe areas you've discovered.

It's open world because I can walk from the village to the village outskirts to age of yore and then other ages and fight any number of monsters out in the open without any missions.

Had a feeling the Vita version might suffer with the change to open world...

Don't know if I'll be back to this on release. Have to finish Yakuza 0, start Nier Automata and be ready for Persona 5 on time, that's a whole lot of heavy hitters to find a spot for Toukiden 2.

That said, 1/Kiwami was the most enjoyable hunting game after MH for me. After being pretty disappointed in God Eater 2, I hope for Toukiden 2 to pick up the slack. Will definitely try the demo and if it gets its fangs into me again, will probably try to make some time for it as soon as possible.

After going Longsword/Bow in the original, I'm looking at the new weapons mainly. S&S seems technical and hard-hitting, so that's the first I'll try.

On the plus side, this means ME:A will go 50% by summer sale!

Don't know where I am with this game. Played kiwami on the vita and really enjoyed it but trying the demo on the ps4, the game felt really slow and combat felt dull. Now whether that's how the original game was and I forgot or this is the new style has made me consider giving this a miss.

I noticed that too. C&S definitely seems less viable/interesting now that every weapon allows for grapple and mobility.

After playing Kiwami one thing I really hoped they expanded upon is the Mitama system. If someone could layout some of the differences that would be great.

Waiting to hear impressions of the PC port. If it's even "decent" levels, I'm picking this up later tonight.

Nice OP too!

Hopefully tomorrow will get a good launch and I can get some time in MP beyond just Phase 1 for my review.

I have found a single reviewer that's doing MP and everyone I've come across doesn't have access to Phase 2 yet. At least I can help newcomers do their key quests with ease.

Wait do reviewers only have the Carry-over demo as well?

Or am I misunderstanding?

No, we have the full game. There just hasn't been anyone online playing it.

Tried limiting myself to Phase 2 and up when searching for rooms, 0 hits. Searching for just Phase 1 and I'll get a few rooms at a time.

I see. I hope the MP population stays though! I didn't get Kiwami at launch but I will for sure want to play some online. In fact will be doing some of the Carry-over demo missions online after work. :D

wait, cant you play single player?

Sure you can.

I will also wait for PC performance before buy, (or maybe i can try that, lol) glad discount and bonuses will still remain after release.

Edit: Also this is PC settings from according to a player from Steam community:

Maxframerate: 30 or 60 FPS
Texture Quality: High/Middle/Low
Texture Filters: High /Middle/Low
Particles: High/Middle/Low
Shadows: On/Off
Light Shafts: On/Off
Anti-Aliasing: On/Off
Reflections: On/Off

Yeah. All the open world content is Single-player.

Really wish you could explore the open world with friends. I think that is a bit of a missed opportunity.

oh, whew, my bad, the last few posts about multiplayer had me confused

What JPS Kai was talking about was how most of the reviewers he has come across aren't in the Phase 2 missions yet in the MP, having no doubt been playing the Single-player portion mostly.

Since it works like Monster Hunter in that progress between SP and MP are different. At least to an extent. I'm unsure if you can get to new stuff in the MP before you reach that content in the SP.

I do hope that the Quality and filters do actually change the quality unlike a certain Musou game on PC :P

I've played around a bit more with the demo and it still feels like I'm missing some defense options with the chain and sickle. The manhunter's spin attack can kill me at full health and the dodge isn't precise enough to save you if it changes direction quickly. I guess I should change to the sword and shield but it still feels like they changed some of the control options but didn't adjust the enemy behavior at all to balance it.

Also, at least in the demo, the Vita version looks awful, but I've seen some suggestions that the final version is a bit better? Anyone with the JP version able to give a comparison?

I haven't played the ENG or JPN Vita version but here's a video of the full version:

For sure looks rougher than the original.

I hope we get a Pro Patch on PS4 asap. Game could really benefit from 4K.

Interestingly Toukiden Kiwami on PC was directly PS4 version, unlike other KT games. Also this time they even add 60fps for PC version, i wonder how stable, we'll see soon.

I played Toukiden (with the expansion?) on Vita, and it was great. Playing the demo on ps4 felt kinda underwhelming to be honest. Kinda felt like a Vita game still, only blown up bigger on my TV.

I guess I would still like the gameplay, but I kinda expected it to feel & look more modern.

I think the issue is that they want to try and keep some parity with the Vita version and being able to reuse stuff when they can to keep the budget lower and that's going to hurt the look of the game. :(

I think the gameplay is still good though.

Can't help it since the game has cross play.

Koei Tecmo America said on twitter that sadly there will be no last minute pre-load on PS4. :(

Which is so weird cause Nioh had a pre-load.

Nioh was also marketed by Sony. When it came time to request review copies, we dealt with Sony instead of KT.

Just played the demo. I loved the first one on Vita. Never played it on PS4 and my first thoughts are... this is way uglier and janky than I remember on the Vita. Even the text and menus are uglier than I recall, especially on the PS4 since they're often pixelated. I think this one is a pass for me.
