The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT2| It's 98 All Over Again

Hello all, I haven't played BotW but I have a question. I noted to someone in the current "What does MS need to counter Zelda & Horizon" topic the ways in which, I gather, Breath of the Wild moves the open-world genre forward, and this guy responded. Now, I'm fairly sure he's wrong, but I can't really take the conversation any further as I'm only going by stuff I've read from other people and seen in videos. Can anyone comment? Like, for instance the AI is surprisingly good, is it not - such as the way enemies will try to push boulders on Link or throw explosive barrels at him and suchlike?

Okay, I haven't played the game but going by all the footage and reviews I've watched this sounds like total bullshit. The game is designed in such a way with all these compelling systems like weather, physics, climbing, AI and a truly freeform world that it feels like a step forward for the open world genre.

Yeah I can guess you haven't played the game. Zelda and AI don't make me laugh and I'm sorry dynamic weather and physics I've seen in a lot of open work games and hey one can climb in Assians Creed.

The Freedom in Zelda is nothing like what one see's in GTA V, Fall Out III, IV, The Witcher 3 and god knows how many other open world games.

This last sentence in particular - this is proper bullshit, right?!

I think I got half the memories so far. My opinion is that Zelda is an entitled bitch who is self-concious, narcissistic, and generally has poor social graces. It's a pretty interesting take on the character. I don't really blame her, but her interactions are pretty insufferable. It's all about her. Her interests. Her inability to do something. Her failings. Her potential. Her mission. On one hand, I love seeing a Zelda who has so much agency, and actually thinks for herself. On the other hand, the way the scenes are directed doesn't really paint her in positive light.

That's why it's The Legend of Zelda. :p

Her character is very interesting that it is something people can relate to. Urbosa and Daruk describes her very well.

The AI is surprisingly advanced for an open world game, could use more enemy variety, as far as freedom... This might just be me but it feels restrictive to play other open world games at the moment. I tried jumping into Horizon and it didn't mesh with me at all because I kept comparing the gameplay to Zelda. Horizon is great, but I'll have to wait for a while before I can properly play it without comparing it to Zelda.

This is how I felt when I finished watching Breaking Bad, it was so good that I had to take a break from drama TV shows afterwards because I couldn't help but compare it to that series haha

I'm finding the shrines get a bit tedious.

Would rather less shrines, more proper dungeons. Feels too copy and paste, even though the content within each is different. They can't replace a properly crafted dungeon.

The AI is good, but not in the ways you'd expect. They do a lot of weird things, like using barrels against you, big enemies throwing small enemies as weapons when they find themselves unarmed, certain enemies observing the player from a distance and not approaching until you're distracted, but once you're engaged in 1 on 1 combat with an enemy it's fairly standard stuff.

I can't really think of any game which gives you as much freedom as BotW, considering literally everything other than the first area and final boss are optional. The entire game is guided by the player's desire to explore, much moreso than it is by the story.

As for dynamic physics, I'm sure they've all been done in games before, but the way they're integrated into every facet of the world and game design is something I personally haven't seen before. Admittedly, I haven't played a ton of open world games before, mainly just Fallout and AssCreed.

I heard the last person who brought up Horizon in here got dragged into a dark room and tasered. It was not pleasant.

I'm not talking about Horizon though. I made a comment in the other topic that Zelda seemed very advanced for an open world game with interesting and advanced systems and the way these things interact with each other, and the guy refuted it -- well, with that comment I quoted.

I like Horizon a lot, but it's undeniably pretty rote as far as open worlds go. Zelda on the other hand seems to be genuinely pushing the genre forward in interesting and innovative ways. I hope to get a Switch or Wii U to play it, but I don't have the money any time soon :(

EDIT - anyway, sorry if this is seen as a derail. Thanks to everyone who replies, and I will go now.

Zelda's world is very interactive and there really is a ton of freedom to do what you want, when you want. It honestly lacks structure to the point that it's turning some older Zelda fans off. I personally adore what they've done here and cannot wait for the DLC and the proper follow-up.

I think you mean Zelda fans who jumped in with the 3D games (i.e. OoT). NES Zelda (and LttP to degree) didn't have structure.

I stated in my first post in this thread that this is the first Zelda game to capture that "magic" of me playing the original and LttP for the first time.

It has less structure than both Zelda II and ALttP. Its closest cousin is the original game. And heck, now that I think about it, once you leave The Great Plateau, its more non-linear than even that game.

Zelda 1 is still the GOAT though.

I'm just saying, they dragged him into a dark room. Tasered him until he was on his knees. And then rumors say they waterboarded him after that. It was brutal. :(

Zelda II is actually... really, really linear. There are some pretty obscure secrets, but as far as progression goes, I think it's even more linear than LttP and Skyward Sword.

AlttP pointed you straight at all the dungeons and even numbered them for you, I'd say it was pretty structured

Ok. So I mispoke about LttP
prolly cuz it's my favorite in the series pending completion of this game
, still doesn't take away my point that original NES Zelda didn't have the structure that Orbital was referring to.

Finally completed the story, 55 hours, 14.4% completed haha

I agree with the review scores and think a 10/10 is fair, the last game I would say that for is probably Mario Kart 8 with Witcher 3 and Doom being really close.

I think, and hope, open world RPG devs in the future will take a lot of inspiration from this game with regards to its openness and interactivity, as the world itself is a clear, big step up in quality from previous games including Witcher 3 etc.

I've only gotten a few memories so far, but my impression of Zelda is that she is filled with self-loathing and depression, constantly feeling like a failure who can't live up to the expectations everyone has of her. I suppose that doesn't make her a heroic figure, but it does make her a relatable one, at least for me. It's an interesting take on the princess archetype.

this game man...so satisfying. i'm still in the great plateau. i'm 5 and a half hours in now. i thought i had explored most of it except for the cold area but i found a few places i missed. i can't believe how big it is. i think i now have a good idea of where everything is on it but wouldn't be surprised if i had missed somewhere.

i currently only have 3 seeds, 3 spirit orbs, and 1 rupee. i am not sure how rupee's work now. i remember having loads in ocarina from cutting grass. i don't know what the seeds are for but i know there are 900! i feel like i have missed loads already. not sure how many are here. i think spirit orbs get you more hearts? but haven't figured how to do that yet. i'm just going in blind and trying to figure it out on my own.

1 more shrine left. i will want to leave the plateau when i finish it but i have a feeling i've missed stuff. i wanna experience everything. oh and that sound when opening chests...i love it. way better than ocarina's i think!

Is my game bugged?

So when I get a bloodmoon cutscene it seems to be only like a second of the world actually looking like the blood moon is happening (red and stuff in the air) then its just a normal night. Seems like I dont get bloodmoon nights, only the cutscene.

Is it normal to have 125+ hours played in this game already, I'm only done with 2 of the divine beasts, found around 70 shrines and keep discovering new places every single moment. Is like I'm decided to advance in the main story and all of a sudden you see a new place that catches your eye and waste 2-3 hours exploring. What an amazing game!
still looking for another fairy location, only found one and I have no idea where the other loacations are and I don't want to know ... lol

Since you want to figure most out for yourself, only so much: keep searching for Korok Seeds, they will become incredibly useful over time.
As for rupees: you are right, they aren't as many rupees hidden in gras and stones as in the previous games. Most of your income will come from finding hidden treasure chests, selling your ressources and absolving sidequests, so keep your eye on your enviourments obviously ;)

Collecting the memories out of sync is amusing. I got one scene where she's haughty to Link, then the next one I unlocked involved the two in a light-hearted and pleasant conversation.

I actually look forward to seeing all the Zelda memories come together. Your assessment is not without merit, though I feel she's more sympathetic than you suggest - though that may be due to the memories unlocked more than anything.

Either way, I'm really happy with what they've done with her. Damsel plotline aside, it's nice to see Nintendo change things up with regards to character. It's a refreshing take, and I like the change in dynamic between Link and Zelda that arode from it.

Thats normal :D
I found a second one dont know the english name for the location though, plus I didnt have enough rupees at hand to pay... (no pun intended)

Feel like I kind of cheated on a shrine quest
This was for the sword statues in the deset. I got the quest a while ago then forgot about it. Coming from the north into the desert looking for shrines, I spotted what turned out to be this one from a far distance due to the glow. Sailed down, went into a sandstorm and lost the map, but just kept going. Landed there and completed the quest.

There is a pretty significant glitch that causes frequent phantom blood moons. It seems to be caused by having your game suspended for too long. If you close the game and restart, the problem will be fixed.

It's kind of unbelievable this wasn't caught during testing considering it seems to effect 100% of players eventually.

Even more unbelievable that it hasn't been fixed yet.

I don't know, I've seen some say that you've seen everything in the game after 30 hours, but I feel the same as you 100+ hours in. I've got most of the northwest and southeast unexplored still. Feel like I should start finishing up the main quest soon though.

Does anyone know if upgrading an armor set increases the set bonus?

Does a level 2 ancient gear give the same set bonus as a level 4 ancient gear?

I mean, I have 80 shrines, 140 korok seeds, basically gotten all armor I care for upgraded, so all Great Fairies and I've beaten the game at 90+ hours.

There's no such thing as a blood moon night per se. When a blood moon happens enemies in the world respawn, that's what it is about. So the cutscene plays and then everything goes back to normal, except enemies have now respawned. There's not supposed to be anything special about the specific night when the blood moon happens apart from this.

There's a theory that this has to do with sleep mode. I've experienced it probably four separate times, and had about twenty blood moons that way :p

It's not about that. A bloodmoon night has a bloodmoon all the way from the moon rises until midnight. This is a bugged event when it just happens randomly even during the day.

How do I trigger the Kass riddles? No matter which stable he's at he just asks if I want to hear a song. The only time he said something about a shrine was at a stable near Tabantha (but it wasn't a riddle). So what do l do here?

I don't believe anyone who says they've seen everything in 30 hours. Sure they may have completed the game, but they have missed out on a lot of content.

He only has riddles in designated areas with a shrine puzzle in the area. He always sings the same song at stables.

This turned out to be one of the best quests! At first I was like "oh lame not another zzzz quest..." but goddamn it felt like a mini Duck Tales episode. Kickass shrine reward too: a shrine that isn't a combat trial or a free gimme! I love actual puzzle shrines so much. I get depressed every time I step into a combat trial shrine.

You should visit that wooden platform next to the shrine in Rito Village.

Apparently it's a glitch that happens when you leave the game open and running for too long (which tends to happen on the Switch, because the game stays open in the background if you don't explicitly close it and just put the console in sleep mode). I got these glitchy "instant bloodmoons" as well, sometimes even during the day. Normally they're just supposed to happen at midnight.

Closing and reopening the game in the system menu resolves the problem though.

No this is pretty much the norm for this game. I just got my first divine beast but I'm like 40 hours in. I keep getting side tracked by everything else I see. I just got the parry down and started taking out random Beamos Guardians. I tend to want to protect my horse by making sure she's in a stable before I quick travel anywhere. I keep gliding to any random glowing thing I see.

Also,
I know she's not a fan favorite but I wanted to know more about the relationship between Link and Mipha. He sure did go to Zora's domain a lot back in the day. Enough for random Zoras to just remember you and how much time you spent with Mipha.

Is salmon meunière that good? No food should ever warrant that kind of meltdown.

It's normal, the blood moon is a respawn mechanic with stronger enemies, not a hard-mode night.

Regarding falling stars...

Occasionally I will hear a wooshing sound when exploring the world. It's a swift shwoosh noise. Is this the sound of a shooting star overhead?

There have been several times where I've heard that sound and immediately run for high ground to take a look, but I've never seen anything. But there have also been times where I have seen the shooting star and never found the pillar of light indicating where it's landed.

Don't know if this has been answered, but that sound could also be the one you hear when a timed ability you got through food or elixirs (e. g. "stealth up"), expires after the timer for it reaches zero.

I don't think the guardians with legs respawn, just the legless ones. But I could be wrong.

Every enemy, plant and animal respawns at the same time. Even the test of strength bosses. The only enemies that don't are the four Divine Beast bosses. Any items/weapons not found in chests that are just laying around also respawn.
