Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

"Jim Sterling doesn't like game"..... Wait is that something new? Jim didn't like a game??!? NO WAY, IF JIM DIDN'T LIKE GAME, IT MUST SUCK!!?!?

This. I mean, I respect the guy, but he gave Zelda BOTW a 7. I get it, it's an opinion, but clearly his standards and tastes are way fucking different than mine.

A lot of posts in this thread from people playing it contradicting Jim and Laura. Don't cry that the sky is falling quite yet.

Im not sure why you felt this way? I said this over and over, the people being YL were also behind the Rare dud's post MS purchase. YL looked uninspiring from the initial concept design, further videos proved this.

IMO its going to score poorly.

Several people who used to work at Rare specifically said that Microsoft forced them to work on garbage like Kinect Sports and Avatars. Viva Pinata showed they were still capable of making a good game. I hoped that them forming their own studio would give them the freedom they needed to make a good 3D platformer.

Me too.

If not...please...MICROSOFT...for the love of everything, bring back a GOOD Banjo or Conker game/platformer. It would at least be on PC and Xbox.

I'm not expecting anything.

You asked for it:

the footage of the casino stage that came out a few months ago made the game look barren, boring, and uninspired. optimistically you'd hope it's just one bad stage, but i won't be surprised if the game ends up being bad.

At PSX it didn't run particularly well and wasn't anything amazing but I still really enjoyed it

It's very much "one of those games" which is what they've pretty much sold it as. If it's something like later areas running like shit (or just not really adding anything new to the table) I could see where they're coming from

Certainly not expecting Mighty No 9 but we'll see I suppose, lol.

This post made me laugh, satirical or not it's hilarious to hope for Microsoft to make a Banjo game after they've sat on the ip for 15 years.

2 people vaguely hinting at something isn't really a reason to freak out yet, imho

Especially considering the two people involved in said hinting. Although I would have thought Laura was a fan of games like this.

Young Banjo for Hololens will happen I'm sure

I'm gonna like this game regardless. If I can enjoy Donkey Kong 64 then this'll be easy to digest. Besides good or bad I just love to collect shit at the end of the day.

I guess people are on edge because Mighty Number 9 failed to deliver so hard? Let's all remember the KS games that have delivered. Specter Knight campaign just came out for example!

If the Toybox is any indication the console versions will be annoying at times but mostly tolerable when it comes to performance.

Also, it's always bizarre to see some people in these threads go "not looking too good, sounds like another Kickstarter failure!" when there are literally hundreds of positive articles and videos on the game out there. Jim Sterling is great but he's well known for having polarizing reviews. This isn't another Mighty No. 9 where it won't even satisfy the fans of its inspiration, we've seen enough gameplay to know that much. If you like Banjo-Kazooie this game is definitely for you.

this news may be disappointing to some people, but certainly shouldn't be shocking to many after the seemingly never-ending comedy of errors over the past few years. Making games is tough and sometimes people do not do a good job.

Hope for the best, but wait for reviews. Hype is for suckers and I have been a sucker in the past and probably will be again;)

A person's entire body of work and career as a reviewer is irrelevant cause he gave BotW a 7?

Nah. But I've never really agreed with his opinions on games - Vanquish, Sonic Colors, Metal Gear Solid V, Skyrim, Breath of the Wild... I think Jim does good commentary about the game industry but his opinions on what makes a good or bad game is lost on me.

Is it like the Toy box? Then framerate be damned if I can get some good ol' 3D adventure platforming. Never really cared about Jim's opinion on games as is (no offense).

A person's entire body of work and career as a reviewer is irrelevant cause he gave BotW a 7?

Yup, the mental gymnastics people do to try and negate criticism from a reviewer because of past reviews is crazy -- especially when the person in question hasn't played the final product presumably. I mean, we all have games that didn't click in the same way as others. And besides, 7 isn't a bad score.

As said, this is echoing some stuff I've heard about the game myself. I'd be slightly wary, and I wouldn't breeze off a warning regarding a pre-order. If you didn't back the game there's nothing wrong with waiting until the reviews drop on the 4th.

Even if it isn't an amazing game, it's going to fill a niche no game has in a long time.

And that is why we have embargos.

Now we have 2 people saying 1 thing and no one can support or contradict that.

Not very fair I think.

Yeah I agree, this is not very fair in my opinion. Whether or not there is any truth to it, if I were the developer I'd be pretty upset that they clearly went around the embargo and provided impressions.

While I imagine they are only trying to provide potential customers a warning, it's not very professional to do this and can be harmful to the game even if only a little bit. I am more interested to hear the wider opinion about the supposed issues brought up here and the specifics as opposed to the implications made and letting it fester in my imagination as to how bad it must be.

Toybox seemed good. Ran ok, controlled well.

Hoping the actual levels hold up. I backed it though so I'm locked in either way. From reading this thread, glad I opted for the PC version.

When I was playing the toybox on my ps4 pro the other day it did seem a bit laggy.

I figured it was just an unoptimised demo though, so hopefully the final game looks and works better especially on the pro.

A person's entire body of work and career as a reviewer is irrelevant cause he gave BotW a 7?

IMO, Sterling overrates a lot of bad/flawed games (8/10 for Triforce Heroes; 10/10 for Deadly Premonition) and underrates some amazing stuff (5/10 for Vanquish; 5.5/10 for Nier). That doesn't mean he's irrelevant; it just means that I don't put a lot of stock in his opinions.

Hmm now I'm very worried about framerate. I really wanted to believe Playtonic would overcome Unity.

Do they specify which version of the game they played?

And to be honest, if this is game design related, I'm personally not too worried. I still doubt it won't at least be "pretty good".

I know people see it as clickbait (as that sort of thing definitely can be) but I do appreciate that Jim tries to give an alternate look at topics/games

Forcing it is never right but saying "hey if you care about stuff like framerates you might not hear as many complaints about it, so be warned"

Not always going to agree with what journalists/professional opinioners have to offer but it's more interesting and useful to get different takes to sort through than everyone providing the same thing

Even perceived exaggeration isn't straight up lying, it could just be something that bothers that person bothering them a lot. And if it's sort of thing that bothers you, it's useful

I will agree that it's a bit odd to put out there with whatever embargo there is, but whatever. I assume they have good intentions

People freaking out because it's now a new Mighty No. 9: Relax
People claiming Sterling is entirely unreliable because some score he gave to a game you liked: Relax

So is Unity a cheaper alternative to UE4 or something?

Yes. Unity is significantly cheaper than UE4. It's not a bad engine though, just made better for PC's than consoles.

A person's entire body of work and career as a reviewer is irrelevant cause he gave BotW a 7?

No, at least not to me. He's made me laugh and can make good points on the industry, but for games, I've usually always disagreed with him, so I see no reason to change that.

There's been plenty of positive impressions from people who have played it. I'm not even remotely worried.

On mobile right now but there was a post in the KS thread with a GameXplain "50 questions answered about YL" video where the guy really enjoyed the game.

Nuts & Bolts came out in 2008.

So your saying she isn't a fan? Don't do this.

Of course I'm not saying that! Just saying the fact Laura IS a fan of games like this makes me slightly more concerned than if it were another game in this exact situation since her and Jim can both be pretty hyperbolic. Not too sure Jim is a fan of stuff like this so his opinion doesn't surprise me as much.

April 4th, 8AM PST.

That's... surprisingly early? Wow.
