NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

I mean in the case of Emil's song, it has Japanese lyrics. But Weight of the World is there in English. So it seems to me like they'd have English songs on the US iTunes.
I'm only really concerned about the disc set, cant stand itunes

looking into it, seems it just has the chaos/non vocal versions of birth of a wish and possessed by disease?

Thats actually pretty disappointing if so

I really don't understand how some people think it's kill. It doesn't work in context with the surrounding text. During that moment, along with the pacing of the word structure, Adam talks almost exclusively about desire and want and needs and basically trying to get into 9S' head. Adam says he wants to "destroy everything" but that's in relation to machines. He also says he "wants everything" which is in relation to 2B. He's interpreting 9S as a selfish character and trying to get 9S to hate him by getting at his core. Considering how the rest of the game plays out, "kill" does not make sense.

The whole context of the screen is about desires and getting under 9S' skin wrt selfishness that doesn't surround his mission, the pacing suggests it's of a sexual nature.

Edit: basically what I'm saying is that scene is basically a 4th wall break want to put the player on edge for looking at 2B in a sexual way. It works with the themes better this way too.

I think the idea is that it implies both. The scene from the soul box sort of gives it new context. In a reversal of the tender strangulation scene, now 9S is on top and he's not so gently penetrating her with his sword.

I feel like 9S and 2B's relationship is tangled up in this murder cycle. The scene with the copies in the tower also might indicate he's killing her out of love rather than hate.

You could think of it as a power thing too, 2B holds the dominant position by being the one who always has to kill him (She could let someone else do it, but she sees it as her responsibility, or maybe she's possessive?) My man 9S just wants to reciprocate that kind of love.

Still don't see it that way, sorry.
The part in the soul box, at least the way i saw it, was that 9S was perverting his memory of 2B. no one was destroying his memories other than himself. He uses 2B's memory as a vehicle for hatred, hence why all the loving memories disappear and why 2B turns into pixel-adam&eve. Him "killing" her is actually him killing his memory of her. (i explained this in further depth in the OT when i was talking about Adam and Eve's use of symbolism in the greater picture of the plot, but i don't feel like finding it again and posting it)

Thats why i said later parts of the game don't support the "kill" idea.

but maybe thats just my interpretation.

Wonder how messed up the side of the world in eternal night is. They never did explain what causes that in any game, did they?

Wait that "take care of 9S" quote, did she mean kill him?

Weird interpretation, but no. How does 2B entrusting the future and everyone else to A2 suddenly turn into "oh, by the way, kill 9S for me." Kind of silly. The whole point of 2B's arc was to get away from the cycle of killing 9S, not for it to just loop back to taking care of 9S. I mean, ultimately it does thanks to her sword impaling him, but the cycle is still effectively broken since 2B wasn't the one carrying out his death sentence for this final iteration.

Pfft, if you were laying there dying you wouldn't take your significant other with you in a murder/suicide pact so you're together forever?

You don't know what love is!

M-Maybe.

We got a pretty lengthy discussion on the whole 2B/9S thing on reddit yesterday(unfortunately it was for some reason taken down by auto-moderation and only just recovered):

Cruel Blood Oath and the sexual imagery throughout the game makes it pretty clearly romantic, I think. It could be platonic, but that would go against most of the evidence in the game.

As for ****, I think it was censored for a reason. It's intended to have multiple valid readings.

Well you can also validly debate whether or not 2B had feelings for 9S. I always believed that she cared for him but never romantically like he obviously did for her but that after everything is over something might happen because the dynamic of their relationship has completely changed.

Considering how jealous she gets in the amnesia quest I think it's hard to argue 2B isn't at least somewhat romantically interested.

I listened to the Japanese version in full for the first time a while ago. I loved how the singer sounds like she's in the verge of crying.

I am really starting to like all versions of the song equally.

I've been told she infact did end up crying near the end of the song. Honestly all 3 versions are great but I'm always bias to Emi Evans.

I think it's pretty obvious she loves him as well but is trying to repress it because he's going to die and forget. Her reaction at the beginning when he's almost killed by the Engel-thing is way too dramatic for someone she doesn't like. It makes no sense at first either since she's cold and says feelings are forbidden.
The game is trying to mislead you by playing on the usual tropes of "oh she warmed up to him and likes him now" and only at the end you learn she has known 9S for a while and has killed him many times, and after the fact you realize the hints are everywhere.

She literally mounts him in the A/B ending, and Cruel Blood Oath refers to their relationship as love.

However, I'm curious if the Japanese text uses male pronouns for Cruel Blood Oath. I know English translations have a habit of turning gender neutral terms into obviously gendered ones.

I didnt even think of the whole playing against the warming up trope.

Also on the whole love thing, I definitely feel like its down to that. 9S's love was obvious, but every hint shows it from 2B leans towards it. As mentioned above in the quote, as well as the mentioned jealousy in the amnesia quest.

Another thing to note is the Nines nickname. 9S claims that people close to him call him nines, but the only one actually to ever call him nines is 2B. Seems to me it was a nickname 2B gave him that was unable to be wiped out.

No gendered pronouns in the Japanese version, what turns into "him" in English is just "ano hito" in Japanese.

(Also, the story on iron pipe speaks of a brother instead of a dad. :P )

Interesting. In that case, given that it's 9S' weapon and 2B is the one who guards her thoughts so closely, I think it makes more sense for it to be 9S' thoughts.

Lol at the iron pipe. Quantum Nier.

Poor Popola and Devola. They get shafted even in ending E.

Also do the pods have backup data on all the Yorha units? We only see the trio, but if they have all the data they should have backups for all Yorha units right?

Popola and Devola...; ; If I'm ever an actor in a weird future and I need to cry, I'll think of those two.

They most likely only have backup data for the units they support, which would just be A2 and 2B for 042, and 9S for 153.

There were more than those pods at the end though 🤔

Other androids call him Nines. I did the Unit Data quest yesterday and 4S calls him Nines.

Pop and Dev get redemption. Redemption for a crime they never committed : (

I finished all the main endings last night and have been reading this thread to soothe me down. I don't know where to start.

When I first played through route A, I thought to myself that this game is really good, easily my 2nd place for GOTY so far for me, 1st being Zelda.

Fast forward to route C. I cried like a child when I meet Pascal, with no memory, selling his friend's and children's parts and cores. To think when I started playing, reading OT thread and seeing people say they "bawled their eyes out", I really thought they were just being over dramatic. Funny how that turned out. And I really haven't cried at all during games since forever. The closest I got is misty eyes during The Witcher 3.

Finding King of the Forest, with a sole guard protecting him at the end was also fucking sad too. Man, I fucking hated A2 when I first met her and also myself. That changed completely after learning about her story though.

The plot twist that 2B has been killing 9S again and again did not surprise me since I kind of expected it since the end of Route A when she said "This keeps happening" or some sorts. Same with the extinction of human. Overall it's a very good plotline though. Nothing to criticize.

And then ending E. Holy shit. I kept dying at the Square Enix boss onwards, the first time I saw the messages, I was like what are these craps, then it hit me and that kept me trying over and over the whole night. I had one crash, but kept going still. Strange enough, I didn't feel any rage.

Alas, I got tired, and accepted the help offer. When the chorus hit, holy shit, motherfucking goosebumps. I chose to erase my saves and went to sleep.

Now to find a good sources to learn about the prequels and start 2nd playthough after.

Funny, I have never ever played a game again so soon afterwards, and this is after 61 hours to boot.

Btw, what is a good source to watch about the prequels? This guy Clemps series?

Quick question on how to continue. I just finished route C but somehow got the D ending. Now what do I do? Select Continue game? Chapter select?

Go to Chapter Select, and select either the last or second to last chapter (I don't remember), and choose the option you didn't choose the last time.

I was just listening to Copied City from the OST and I think that moment in the game where you first enter is high up there with some of my favorite moments in games. The combination of the mystery of everything that is going on, the music, and the environment is just perfect.

This game motivated me to look up some Drakengard 1 stuff and goddamn that game is fucking weird and fucked up. Cannibalism, pedophilia, incest, lalalala lalalala, etc. I love it. I remember a cousin of mine had it when we were kids but we never got past the second stage due to the shit combat. It was too boring. The music that plays during the Queen Beast fight is some haunting shit too. It's so good.

Now imagine yourself seeing all that dark stuff under an insane, aggressive soundtrack. D ending manages to go completely nuts compared to everything before it.

Yeah, the moment I saw that elevator door open up to pure white was a real trip. And then the music kicked in.

lol I would love to cosplay as someone from Nier but my only options are 9S, Adam (amusing since that's my name) or Eve and while I'd be able to easily do 9S since we're probably the same height/body type, I don't want to, and Adam and Eve are WAY not my height or body type. Which would leave me crossplaying (which is fine, I do it all the time) except...most of the people I'd cosplay as I wouldn't be able to like 2B or Commander or A2.

...and there are no other male characters.

Damn.
