You contradict yourself. Class hierarchy is not the same as racial hierarchy, you even give a solid reasoning as to why it is not racial hierarchy, but simply to denote that you have a high earning office job (intra racial class distinction). Tanning is done for the exact same reason, it shows that within the norm of office jobs (or cold climates which lead to white skins), you are affluent enough to take frequent holidays to far away places. I can guarantee you that when office jobs become the norm in developing countries, in a hundred years people will no longer whiten themselves, but start tanning. You can already see some early signs of this in Japan.

Well the impression I get that in some societies it is a class issue but in some other parts it's more of a race issue.

Like I wouldn't associate skin whitening in the US with class. I would associate it with race. Whereas in India I would see it strictly through the perspective of class.

But yeah maybe I'm off. This is something that has never been considered in my native country (present day) so in a way I'm looking at this from the outside. I mean I've also lived in the US and Canada, but never came across anyone there who would be into skin whitening that I was aware of (most friends would have been men though which don't really go too much into grooming products).

Well at least this thread has made me aware that I'm going to search my house for any Nivea products, immediately throw them out if I find any, and never use anything from this company ever again.

Obviously meant to stir controversy. Who the fuck uses Nivea deodorant?

Now they get attention where they had none before. This is how you take advantage of people calling them out for racism. They use it as their vehicle.

The context is that there's a trend in beauty product marketing specifically in the deodorant space to sell a product as not leaving behind stains on clothing. That's the #1 message that brands like Dove, Secret and now Nivea are pushing.

When you combine this context with the context that this is coming from a Middle Eastern ad agency, where sensitivities toward race are nowhere near those in the US/EU, then it makes sense in the context of the culture it was released within.

I know this because my fiancee works in this beauty marketing space and I've worked in advertising for nearly a decade.

The ad is 100% racist. I fully understand the context which is why I aint really feel any burning fury about this. It's w/e. I don't expect ads in the middle east to be culturally in tune with the treatment and demonization of dark skin. But in this global age, you can't post shit on your facebook page and just be like "for our eyes only".

You're gonna have people from all over the world seeing this stuff so there are going to be certain expectations. If I had a dollar for every excuse people make for why something isnt racist I would be rich as hell

How does that tone deaf racist garbage actually make it all the way to the market? Disgusting.

well guess what, when white men are the only ones who decide over these kind of ads?

i dont know the context, and if there are other ads for the same product, but, welp, i think it suits the trump administration.

From my understanding, the ad in the OP came from Nivea's Middle East team.

Based on the amount of suspect ass "sorry we didn't mean for it to be racist," but incredibly racist ads coming out of Nivea, I fully believe them to be purposefully straddling the line of what's ok and just plain fucking not under the pretense of being tone-deaf for the sake of all press is good press

So the guy holding what appears to be a head, that is real? Smh

Well, it is his own unshaved, uncombed head he throws away in an add for shaving products. Same with the other guy, he holds it in his hand. But that is not stopping the outrage train, so all aboard choo choo.

Also it is 6 years old, but again that is not going to stop the train.

White, in terms of art, does symbolize among other things, purity. Mainly because it's the color of milk, the purest thing on earth used to feed babies.

Hence why Kubrick got the A Clockwork Orange protagonist to drink milk, someone evil enjoying something pure and all that entails.

I would've given Nivea a pass BUT, there are other examples so... maybe not.

The pendulum of the social status quo is swinging into racist tone deaf territory as the norm.

Again the add with the head 6 years old. There was an article about it on Huffington post in 2011. And white is purity association is only about 5000 years old.

But I guess, it is something new, you are right.

I can see why people think its racist without context but it isnt racist.

Saying a my white tshirt is pure has nothing to do with race but i agree that the fact that nobody saw this and said "I dont think this is a good idea" is mind bogglling.

Oh you're one of those people that thinks racism is a new thing and never existed until recently. Okay continue.

The fact its 6 years old doesnt not make it racist. Fuck outta here.

______________

Nobody has ever referred to their shirt being "pure". You guys seriously acting like that's a thing? It's not even awkward wording. Its just fucking not used in the english language. If you dont think its racist that's fine. But holy, it is not some obvious use of any english I have ever known.

I don't get it. I see the problem with the re-civilize ad, though seeing it alongside the "white" version limits the problem to the word choice and even then i don't know that it's intentional. But the white is purity / black is courage ads seem fine? Surely the people that think it's racist are the ones making it racist? White has been associated with purity and innocence for thousands of years. Priests wore white in ancient Egypt and Rome as a symbol of their chastity.

I think some people are way too sensitive. Morgan Freeman is right, just stop talking about it. The fact that people still use the term African American is the states is mind boggling to me. I've never heard of an African Britain or African Spaniard. American is American. Skin colour is irrelevant.

I can see how it could be interpretted as racist and whoever wrote/signed off it are complete idiots for missing that. However, people calling Nivea disgusting or claiming they're not going to buy their products again are being ridiculous imo.

Also those comments are clearly sarcastic.

This era has got to be one of the worst eras in history. Racism is everywhere now.
This, if serious, is also completely ridiculous.

Nah, not going to stop talking about people with my skin color are represented. That's now how things progress.

Just googled that quote:

Man...I liked Morgan Freeman, but fuck this shit.

Because 6 years old = might as well have never existed, amiright?

So, people start to get on the outrage train because of the white is purity thing. Something which is no issue, because white is purity for pretty much the whole history of humanity already and also in pretty much every culture. So it uses one of the most ancient color associations we have.

So it starts lose steam, because the outrage train can only run on outrage and people find something 6 year old to get it started again. I know some 30-50 year old beauty commercials which are very sexist, that should add some steam again to keep this rolling for at least another few pages.

.

There's no way they didn't realise it sounded racist.
