A note about Persona 5 Streaming From Atlus

Let's Plays got me into this series.

I watched Kowbrainz do an amazing LP of Persona 3 FES. I was super depressed so I would binge watch multiple episodes a day. I finally caught up and watched the finale as he was uploading it. Was amazing. I bought a PSP to play P3P. Same thing with Persona 4. Watched an LP of that. Watched one of Golden.

Knowing the end of Persona 3 did not in any way diminish my enjoyment of the game or my desire to actually play through the game (it took me about 95 hours too).

I think there could have been a better way to do this.

This reeks of Atlus Japan, a few years too late, just now realising that streaming is a thing.

And you could have informed people of this policy before hand so they can prep around it.

Not that it makes the streaming fear any less ridiculous but Atlus did block PS4 sharing/recording, so the warning signs were there.

I mean, if they care this much about spoilers, why the FUCK didn't they put in the money/effort to release the game on the same date worldwide? The six-month delay between the two releases has done more to increase the chance of someone getting spoiled than the ability to stream/share the game on social media now possibly could.

Same here. I watched a friend stream P4 from start to finish and fell in love with the series and got on board. Total misfire by Atlus here.

True. I was mostly thinking about it in the implication that people already recorded a lot of footage rather than not having something else lined up. There's no shortage of other games to stream for this spring though.

That poor, poor Community Manager. They have a truly thankless job ahead of them.

That awkward feeling when you're the unfortunate soul stuck being the paid PR person and customers who tag themselves with your IP are running defense for your Japanese home office harder than you are.

If it wasn't for the Giant Bomb Endurance Run, I would never have bought the game, the vita version, the anime cartoon, and all of the spinoffs. I also would not have bought the special edition of Persona 5.

I also would not have made the Persona 4 Weather app for iPhone a few years ago. That app was free, was downloaded tens of thousands of times from all around the world, and had a perfect five star rating on the App Store. I tried to give the app to Atlus so that it would continue. I never made any money from it. It was a fan made app from someone who loved the series for fans worldwide.

Instead, I got a lawsuit threat and had to delete it. Today, I still get emails from time to time asking if I'm bringing it back. So, I'm not that surprised by this news even if it isn't comparable to my situation.

Ahh, another terrible PR move by Atlus JP. I am sure that during the past 7 months or so from the Japanese release nobody leaked any spoilers online.

Instead of using streamers/YouTube as an opportunity for free advertsisments, Atlus is throwing out the whole thing. It's surely "For the Children".

I can understand in not allowing more then 90 min of gameplay or not allowing full story since this game is mostly about that. However the other dumb restrictions they put on it are just outdated and backwards. Between delays, late localization, localization issues and now this, it's like Atlus Japan is actively sabotaging Atlus USA efforts in the West.

Seriously, WTF?!

Then again, if John Hardin was running this shit show, he'd probably amp up the condescension in the statement and stick his foot further into his mouth then he ever thought was possible.

Well if they had compromised and made the stream limitations just a timed thing for 2-4 weeks I would be like ok that's a request that we could consider but man instead I'm just thinking fuck of ATLUS join the goddamn year 2017.
I love your games but this is fucking stupid.

I think that has been actively proven, even before the real shit show around this game begun. Atlus Japan does not give a fuck about USA branch, even willing to play themselves in order to screw them over.

I have no doubt Atlus will try and takedown any Youtube videos that break those rules, but they won't make a dent on Twitch, Hitbox or other streaming services. I mean heck, those rules actively prohibit speedruns of the game, and telling the speedrun community they can't run a specific game because of spoilers isn't going to fly.

It's just yet another one of Atlus Japan's backwards decisions like region locking Persona 4 Arena to "prevent JP players reverse importing the US version" (at a higher cost and months later? yeah sure) or years worth of no Japanese voices. The company is run by cranky old suits that are 20 years out of touch.

The problem is all this backlash is gonna be seen by Atlus USA, but it's probably Atlus Japan who's to blame here. They can point at a negative reaction when talking to them(Japan), but I kinda doubt they'll listen or care. Maybe I'm too cynical.

Well I think gameplay streaming is the dumbest thing ever (unless it's a tournament) so I have no stakes in this.

But it's not gonna happen =

Don't worry. It'll be available for streaming
on Crunchyroll through the Persona 5 anime when it releases.

Twitch's Twitter has advised users not to stream it in order to avoid DMCA takedowns, so they're obviously concerned.

i hope i'm not pissing anybody off with this spam of a message.

are there any NYC gaffers out there who bought the regular cover/edition of the game, wanna trade for the steelbook?

It's been a year of "people who don't know how the world works in 2017" so it kinda feels so minor but: /|tlus pls

For every stream that gets taken down, 15 more will pop up. And they certainly won't touch the big name streamers that will ignore the rules. I don't doubt a few will get hit with a DMCA, but it'll be like them trying to patch a sinking ship with some sellotape.

Will the bigger channels even bother and find the trouble worth it though.

Atlus Japan is so backwards that they don't believe in statute of limitations.

This better blow up in their face or riot.

If I were a one of the "bigger channels" on Twitch I'd be streaming this shit 24/7.

Japanese video game executives need to fucking learn.

Not if Atlus decides to threaten legal action. Which they can choose to do if someone ignores the DMCA takedown.

Every thread I've read on GAF about Persona today has been negative. It's almost discouraging me from buying the game at this point.

I can't even see the whole thing on my screen because the game lacks display area settings to prevent overscan from cutting of the UI/subs... Seriously, I'm not surprised.
Basically, even Let's Play's on Youtube are forced to stop at 7/7 and wait what? Until P5 Crimson comes out to stream the rest of the playthrough? Pretty stupid IMO.

That's every single streamer they need to threaten then, the streaming rules also incorporate the video rules, which means such things as major story spoilers, ending segments of the first three palaces, all major bosses after the first and anything to do with Yusuke is prohibited. Depending on how picky they get that's basically the first 4 hours you can stream and nothing more.

I'm sure it's a great game. But this plus delaying the game for localization purposes and still having some of the typical Persona issues has some of the hardcore fans rightfully pissed.

It's an awful mess all told, but I can't help but laugh the rate at which that press release goes from "what's up Persona fans" to "stream this game at your own fucking peril".
Hahaha, you're right.
"We really love this game, but we're willing to throw multiple DMCA's at you! :)"

This is probably the most asinine spoiler-phobia since Persona-GAF essentially blacked out who the big bad was in Persona 4...and this was still after Atlus long stopped giving a fuck.

I can kinda understand where they're coming from, being serious myself about spoilers and having a personal experience with games, but this is just a bad move. This will piss a bunch of people off, put accounts in jeopardy of people who didn't get the memo, and keep the game from reaching new audiences. Bunches of people caught onto P4 through Giant Bomb's Endurance Run, and that was before streaming playthroughs of games was a cultural trend.

Watching the Giantbomb persona 4 endurance run was THE reason for me getting into the persona games. Ended up playing through Persona 4, Persona 3 and dabbled into the SMT games.

For such a niche game, you would think that streams would offer easy advertising. No wonder Jeff Gertsmann has said Persona 5 endurance run will never happen as he alluded to weird restrictions being set upon them well before release.
