A note about Persona 5 Streaming From Atlus

Every thread I've read on GAF about Persona today has been negative. It's almost discouraging me from buying the game at this point.

Same. I've held off buying it all day because I don't want to get burned at launch again. Should probably just dive in though, waited long enough.

They'll just try to find workarounds for things like the "don't post videos after this in-game date" bit.

Ahahahaha, Godlike.

That's every single streamer they need to threaten then, the streaming rules also incorporate the video rules, which means such things as major story spoilers, ending segments of the first three palaces, all major bosses after the first and anything to do with Yusuke is prohibited. Depending on how picky they get that's basically the first 4 hours you can stream and nothing more.

And they would be in their legal right to do so unfortunately.

It all depends on how seriously whoever Atlus has handling that takes their job.

Watching the Giantbomb persona 4 endurance run was THE reason for me getting into the persona games. Ended up playing through Persona 4, Persona 3 and dabbled into the SMT games.

For such a niche game, you would think that streams would offer easy advertising. No wonder Jeff Gertsmann has said Persona 5 endurance run will never happen as he alluded to weird restrictions being set upon them well before release.

And has been confirmed in this thread that the same restrictions being dropped in front of us now, is the same stuff they wrestled with for reviewing games.

Seems like a really stupid thing to try and impose, I would have never have even bought P5 or got into the series if it hadn't been for the P4 giantbomb endurance run either.

As others have stated in this thread, I would have never played Persona 4 without having watched the GiantBomb Endurance Run. That led me to buy Persona 5 at launch and I went back and bought Persona 3. I got through almost half of Persona 4 before I even decided to buy the game and play it myself.

I didn't own any Atlus games until the Giant Bomb ER. Now I have probably have about a dozen, and consider myself a big fan of the SMT series.

This is a really stupid decision.

Tell your Masters they are ass-backward and petty.

Atlus Japan gives no fucks, if they could, they would have cancelled the English release and all Atlus USA could say is: Oh well! Hope you enjoyed the memories!

No doubt about it, Atlus Japan should raked over the coals for this, but Atlus USA should get a fair share of the blame as well for their condescending and frankly customer insulting 'statement'

Which part? The dumb spoiler excuse was used all the way back to the Japanese release, so it's a company line.

What a stupid and backwards thing to do.

They will be losing a lot of free possitive marketing/PR from users sharing screenshots and streams and in the end the only thing this will accomplish is getting internet trolls even more eager to spoil the game

Yep. This is all kinds of messed up.

It may be within their rights, but frankly, all it does is blowback into Atlus's face, and loses any sort of good will or positive word of mouth P5 could build up.

We've seen countless games get to the top of the gaming zeitgeist with the help of streamers. You are telling me it is more important to say fuck you to potential fans and the hardcore who toughed it out for seven fucking months, watch every single goddamn blunder this game had, just because of some misplaced, pre-historic thinking that LP's and streamers will cause sales to decline? Fuck off Atlus, go sit on a cactus.

As someone who only got into the Persona series because of Giant Bomb's Endurance Run of Persona 4, this is really short-sighted of them.

It's not enough to get me to not buy the game, but... man, this is really dumb.

This is a really bad example of mine but, could you imagine what would have happened to NieR Gestalt/Replicant if streaming and stuff was blocked? This is probably just me but I feel like one of the biggest reasons that the game even had a cult following was because of word of mouth and people watching it on YouTube! We would probably never have had a NieR Automata!

The Super Best Friend's just announced on Twitter their LP is cancelled. They have 500k potential eyes that now won't see them basically give Atlus free advertising.

They were gonna LP this? OH MY GOD THANKS FATLUS. This is the most idiotic thing this fucking company has done. Why tarnish your game with this shit? People in this very thread have said they changed their minds about purchasing it.

Good fucking god.

Hell, the success of both Undertale and Minecraft would be non-existent if the respective developers had the draconian streaming rules that Persona 5 currently has.

It's pretty par the course such as P4A's region blocking issues. Atlus already disabling the PS4's share functionality already showed where they stood on this.

Fuck off Atlus, i'm going to game the entire game out of spite and you better be prepared because i'm going to do so at 5 hours at the time archiving it all in case you bring it down.

I am so outraged that I decided to only buy two copies instead of the three I had planned!!

So it take them 6 months to localise the game.
Now they are worried about fucking spoilers?
And they add in a nice threat to streamers as well.

I'm sorry my head just exploded from all the stupid!
What goddamn year is it!?

After the Arkham Knight spoiler being on every single Tweet about the game. I'm kinda happy they did this. I guess the whole thing boils down to if I care where I look. I've watched videos on YouTube only to have bosses and such spoiled on the side tab where you are obviously going to look.

I've done searches for games and got someone's final boss fight or something. It's great we can view games and speed runs, but in all honesty this sort of thing was gonna happen. Years of work spoiled cause someone wants to cast a game to 100 people. Movies books are treated much better if you ask me. Well, they've been around much longer.

I guess it's not me and I don't stream. My fun factor doesn't rely on streams. That's not my area to really comment about. I just know there's probably fewer people enjoying a game when all they can do is stream. It can't all be "let's see before I buy"

Do we know how much control devs have over Share functionality? Like, could they disable streaming while allowing video clips and/or screenshots, or is it all or nothing?

This is almost like a fucking Persona plot!

You have to go into the heart of the backwards game company with its head stuck up its arse and teach them not to be arrogant about video games in 2017.

Seems about right from a Japanese company. Protect the content in hopes people buy the game to experience themselves. That's the main thought process more than anything. Except it's clear a lot of new players do exist from detailed let's plays, especially in the last good few years.

There was this.

That said, it wasn't the outright warning we're getting now.

I feel it'd at least be better if they gave a time or date for when it's fine to post more stuff. As it is, the rules such as posting past 7/7 aren't something you can just catch through a filter anyway.

I am so outraged that I decided to only buy two copies instead of the three I had planned!!

That's not how you boycott.

A successful boycott would mean that you buy three copies and give away one to a friend so Atlus doesn't get their money. That also only leaves you with two copies to play so Atlus again loses out.

Hey Atlus, thanks for letting me know something big/important happens after 7/7. Way to keep a lid on those spoilers.

I've heard that Japanese players will pirate something immediately if given the opportunity, and how protective Japanese publishers are of their games in general.

I think that Atlus is absolutely foolish in this instance.

I'm pretty sure that's just more where the 3rd dungeon should end or so which they feel is a place they want to cut people off.

Disappointing to hear.

Even Nintendo who were very protective for BOTW spoilers, I was able to watch a ton of streams when the game came out.

I think that you only could stream the beginning of the japanese release of the upcoming Utawarerumono game, so I expect the same to apply to the english version.

Sony should not be letting developers block core PS4 features.

This makes everyone look bad.
Not that i defending Atlus from this absurd and stupid decision but Sony made it clear from the get go and is in their TOS that the companies have control on what you are able to record/stream. It has never and will never be fully open like a capture card.

I think blocking any content is stupid and it's why i immediately bought a capture card and it's why i don't go digital because again they have the right to revoke anything at any given time.

I just don't get the whole blocking the consoles built-in Share feature even for screenshots.

I wonder if Sony attempted to persuade them at all. Are there any other games out there that block the Share feature?
