X-Men: Gold contain subliminal messages about conservative Islamic political movement

The fuck, Marvel.

Ardian Syaf is an Indonesian comic book artist that works for several American comic publishers. He's deliberately inserting subliminal messages about conservative Islamic political movement in 2017 Jakarta Election in Marvel's comics. One of the messages written is "QS 5:51". It is a Quranic verse which states that "Muslims should not take the Jews and Christians as their allies/friends". Indonesian translation of the verse states that "Muslims should not appoint the Jews and Christians as their leader", thus the Quranic verse is being used by Islamists to prevent the reelection of a Christian governor of Jakarta. Another subliminal message is "212". It refers to the mass protest by Islamists in Jakarta that took place on December 2nd, 2016. Hence the "212". The protesters demanded the prosecution of the Christian Governor for allegedly committing "blasphemy" towards the Quran.

Would Marvel be okay with anti-Christian and anti-Semitic messages put in their comics by Muslim conservative?

That Reddit thread points to his Facebook where the artist apparently confirms it. I can't confirm myself as I don't speak the language, but yeah... Not a good look for Marvel (though they probably didn't know).

... I really can't be mad at Marvel for not noticing such specific inserts but now that it's out there no doubt they've gotta take action about it.

is this a real verse? wtf lol

There might be a context to that verse we don't know. Maybe it was tied into a war of some kind at the time. You know how crazy religious extremist are like and how they love to take things out of context to justify their stupidity.

I suspect that this will be the end of that artist at Marvel and DC won't touch him with a 10 foot pole either. I hope that's the case as those are some very shitty and intolerant messages to be spread.

Yep. You take one little scripture about Sodom and Gomorrah and suddenly God hates homosexuals and wants them burned and tortured according to some people.

I've read the Qur'an and don't recall that verse. I better go check it out again to see the context.

I HIGHLY doubt that they would approve of this. Especially with G.Willow being there.

I'm just saying that you can't expect editorial to spend days scouring art for hidden messages. Especially if the messages are not even references to things from a culture the editors are familiar with.

If your insert is subtler than "I screwed your sister", it will probably get through.

In the 90s, an X-Men artist (Joe Mad?) called out Roger Cruz for copying his style by having "Cruz swipes again" written as Grafitti or a newspaper headline in a issue of Uncanny X-Men. Cruz was also working for Marvel at the time.

This is the post they claim is him "admitting it"

I'm trying to translate on google though i think there was some misspellings but i need someone who speaks Indonesian because some of the stuff translate seems possible that it was on purpose.

There is a couple talking about political views.
Another commenter pointing it out and him replying "quiet"

Could be completely wrong tho since google translate is not reliable.

Can we get someone who knows scripture here to confirm the QS 5:51?

That seems pretty damning.

One way to interpret it, is that Jews and Christians ought to not be in a leading or ruling position, at least of an Islamic commune or society.

It's particularly great when a creator on X-Men, of all books, is intolerant of people who are different. That's, after all, the entire point of X-Men.

The quote seems to be from a hard to translate passage that can be read in different ways from what I've seen explained after a few minutes of research. But the intended meaning, in the context of these protests in Jakarta through the 212 reference, seems very clear to me.

I'm sure there's a historical context to it, but definitely seems like something that could use a rewrite.

I'm Indonesian and yeah it seems he confirmed it on his facebook. Really disappointing how many bigots (and racists) this election is bringing out, even amongst the art community :/. Luckily among my artist friends, this seems like vocal minority.

Anyway we're really still far from being a tolerant country I guess.

Also I'm not muslim, so can't really talk about those verse.

You can't rewrite anything in the Quran. It is against the religion to do so. Little to nothing has been changed since it was first transcribed.

All scripture, Jewish, Christian and Muslim, contains highly specific edicts for followers of the time. Which is only problematic when it's taken literally and applied elsewhere.

Problem is that all three faiths often insist their book is literally true and eternally applicable.

Reasonable people of all faiths can parse vague guidance from instruction and ignore the horrific. Unreasonable people cannot.

Can somebody explain this one, please? The googles, they do nothing.

But as an aside, yeah, no matter how you spin that quran quote, it's not a great line to be subtly sneaking into comics... much less the X-Men, which have basically always stood as a not-very-subtle message about persecution and bigotry.

What a jackass... It only takes one stupid asshole for the right wing to latch on to and make a big deal about. I can't imagine how upset I'd be if I was muslim myself (and this is still pretty frustrating).

Indonesian readers have to bring this to notice of Marvel editors, they will fire the guy, remove the references in future issues and get someone else to work on future issues.

Seems like an issue. I would make exceptions for verses that sow seeds of distrust and conflict, but that's just me.

And in years to come the house style art for Marvel will be referred to as Land Style, and how if you've drawn one, you've drawn them all.

This seems nuts. I mean, it'd obviously be nuts in any comic book, but for it to appear in the background of an X-Men book is....bizarre. Does make me curious to read the actual issue, Prime was ok : /

If it's on GAF, they almost assuredly already know. It's a Saturday.

It's an X-Men coming and one where Kitty Pryde becomes a team leader, as if including such a message wasn't messed up enough

Don't belittle my beliefs, every word written in Marvel Comics is 100% true.

in this digital age, has marvel ever gone back and edited a comic after release?

edit: also i don't think this qualifies as "subliminal messages" when majority of readers wouldn't know the reference of the plant.

Both major companies already change panels when issues are collected in trades so I wouldn't be surprised if they correct the digital issues as well.
