Samsung Galaxy S8 · S8+ |OT| - Available April 21, 2017

Fuuuuuck it...

Went ahead and paid of my iPhone 7 Plus today. Upgrade eligibility showed up instantly on Best Buy, and so I placed an order for the regular S8 in black.

This will be the first Galaxy phone I own, ever.

iPhone -> 3GS -> 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6+ -> 6S+ -> 7+

In between those, I've also purchased a Nexus 4 a Nexus 5, and a Nexus 6 (which I currently still have, too). Always been very, very hesitant to get with Touchwiz because of the constant repetition of "they always slow down after a year," followed by "this time it's DIFFERENT," and then rinse/repeat.

However, I just can't say no to this design. It's so much better than anything else on the market. And, at the end of the day, I'll 99.9999% most likely upgrade again to the next iPhone later this year, so it's an easy chance to just test the waters for a few months.

For those who have switched from iOS recently...

I imagine I just turn off iMessage. Pull out SIM. Place SIM in S8. And texts and everything should work fine?

I claimed my pre order promo and went to samsungpromitions. It told me to use the samsung shop app. Went through and sent in my info. Status is being reviewed now.

Then i went to register through the app and when i get to the part where i hit register, it says registration error. Idk :(

I mean, I don't even know what the preorder promo is? Hah

I received the VR headset and the phone for me delivery.

That's what I did. Got a Skype account to replace FaceTime too.

As for TouchWiz, this seems a lot lighter than what was on my buddy's Galaxy S4 which was the last time I tried a Samsung device.

Is there a way to customize autocorrect? Keeps changing correctly spelled words with completely different ones. For example I posted in a thread about American airlines and when I typed Jet Blue it changed jet to key.

One thing I'm not diggin is that using my phone in my car (Android Auto), I listen to a lot of music podcasts, and theres no way to skip through songs. I loaded up a trance set on google play music and it only had play/pause/skip.

Also edge lighting seems to not work for me.

i think i heard in the next update to android auto there should be a skip option. Not to mention finally adding Waze.

I gotta ask since I don't meet many android auto users, do you have issues with freezing/connection errors and then having to plug/unplug?

For those of you who already got their phone, how is the battery life? It seems like certain users are reporting an extremely short SoT, while others have a really good time.

I got my S8+ on Thursday. Unpacked and set it up around 6pm CEST. It's now 6:30pm here and I am yet to charge it once. As of this moment, it's at 43%.

I'd say I've moderately used it. About an hour of phone calls, two to three hours celluar usage (fb, twitter, etc) and 30 minutes of Pokémon GO.

I am extremely happy. My S6 Edge would've required at least 4 recharges by now (not kidding...)

1) Incredible. I'm coming from an S7 and the difference is staggering. I imagine it will be even more stark since you are going from S6E.

2) It is amazing to hold, even with a case on. It is is a little tall, so it doesn't play nice with all pockets, but it generally fits in my experience.

Can't wait to upgrade. I'm on an S4

i only used it for a short while yest night, but it worked without any freezing/connection errors for me, i had both google maps active as well as google play music.

Yeah. I'd turn off iMessage now though.

I hate the default keyboard. Just get Gboard or swype

Hmm. Gonna try a more high quality cable to see if that does the trick. I don't think it's my head unit because when android auto freezes my head unit is perfectly fine.

Two and a half day of heavy use during working days before battery dies compared to my S6 edge which is a little over a day and not as heavy use. Battery life is easily more double the S6 edge for me.

After playing with my wife's 8+ I really need to fight the ugre to grab one today. I'm trying to wait it out for the new iphone but damn does this phone look good.

After receiving the email from the promotion two days ago which stated it would take two weeks to review my claim, I now have a completed order. Shipping should be soon, with 2 day air. Can't wait to try out the VR experience for the first time.

I sort of feel like the slow down after the year can be prevented with decent maintenance of the phone. I have the Exynos S7 and my phone is still snappy and fast and I really haven't done anything major except purpoesly do a factory reset when it got Nuogat. For Qualcomm, yeah maybe you need to be more mindful with the maintenance. Maybe the slowdown has to do with the storage getting more full and the fact that people don't do bother doing fresh installs after big android updates and having TouchWiz on top causes some sort of complication? I'm not sure exactly sure, but even if it does "slow down", there are easy remedies that you can apply get it running well. Anyone who says nothing can be done is a dumb ass.

What backgrounds are you guys using? I just have the default ones on. I went ahead and enabled the always on screen. I'd normally choose different wallpapers but the default one for always on is sooo seamless that it's making me hesitate to change the wallpapers.

I kept it as well... It's just too cool to give up. Wish the wallpaper had a bit more going on but I really don't mind it.

Anyone figure out how to get HDR working? I want to try it, but not sure how.

EDIT: Geez, I just enabled the 2K. Holy crap what a difference. This isn't going to destroy my battery, is it?

I feel like the cases have been a huge disappointment for the S8. Every one I've tested so far has something small that is off.

Glad the phone is doing well, so we should see some revisions and new stuff soon.

I came from the 6s+ and it's been smooth sailing. I didn't really use any iOS specific apps so it wasn't that bad. It's great so far.

Best Buy is worthless. Ordered S8. It went through AT&T's check just fine. Asked for some info and confirmed it worked. "Will be ready for pickup in an hour."

Then there was a problem - notified via email to call their hotline. 1hr phone hold time.

So I go to store. They tell me I have to call.

Call. Hold for 45m. She can't seem to "activate" the phone. I tell her to cancel it.

No problem - cancelled.

Get email saying it's cancelled; but to check with my carrier since my phone WAS ACTIVATED.

So now my upgrade eligibility is gone - verified on the AT&T site.

Fuck this shit. I'm buying it full price and I'm done with this installment plan bullshit forever.

Don't really like my case at the momment. The buttons are hard to press. Need to get a case which doesn't cover them.

Happy to hear so many of you love the phone!

Now the wait begins for me for the $1 Black Friday with 2 year contract deal.
(Yes, I'm cheap...lol)

Spigen? Mine is great.

My only worry is, as always, Samsung's software. I like Google Now. I'm not sure I want to pay for a flagship phone while downgrading my day to day experience to use what seems to be an undercooked Samsung alternative.
Couldn't you just use the Google Now launcher? Or something like Nova for example? Not liking the Samsung launcher is an easy problem to fix.
