Nintendo E3 plans detailed

Yeah, so honestly them just saying the Spotlight will feature Switch games does seem to suggest there will be zero 3DS games discussed there. Especially if there is no precedent for them announcing a Direct/Digital Event/Video presentation for only a single platform.

The thing is, Smash for Switch might not be treated like a port. They might treat it like a new game, the same way it was called Smash Bros. for Wii U and Smash Bros. for 3DS.

However they treat it, I think it's highly likely we see some bit of Smash for Switch information, seeing as how Nintendo is focusing on getting all of their big multiplayer franchises onto the Switch ASAP. Even if it's just a "one more thing" segment with a new character introduction (Inklings seem like the obvious choice).

Yeah, the way it's worded is that it will only be Switch because they never said Switch "focused" it says 2017 "focused". The focus applied to 2017. Even if they did show 3DS I think it will be 2 games max. Probably the new Kirby game and one other game. That's it though.

Smash to me is a whole different thing compared to other ports. Smash has a huge fanbase that wants this game on Switch. People want Ice Climbers back. They would show a Smash port at E3. It's very big news for a lot of people.

Opens with Super Mario Odyssey. Details on the Crazy Caps and co-op Tether Mode. November 2017.

Launch trailer for ARMS. Showcase two new characters. (Press was embargoed from revealing them in preview/review coverage.) "Out this week!"

Hero Mode trailer for Splatoon 2. New level themes, stage elements, enemies and bosses. Callie and Marie are playable characters. July 2017.

Quick note on DLC Pack #1 for Breath of the Wild, showing it in action, with release date. Quick glimpse of artwork for DLC Pack #2.

Pokken Tournament. Includes the arcade-only additions. New characters, as well. New "switch" mode where you can choose two playable Pokemon, each with their own supports, and switch between them freely, like a 6v6 battle. August 2017.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Comedic turn-based strategy RPG. Mario and friends arm themselves with new E. Gadd inventions to ward off an inter-dimensional invasion by the Rabbids. A friendly UFO from another world helps guide them. September 2017.

Fire Emblem Warriors. Several new characters shown. Switch between characters mid-battle. Pair Up for team attacks. Support conversations in between missions. October 2017.

Pokemon Stars. Definitive edition of Sun and Moon. Pokemon follow you in the overworld. New points of interest in each town. New post-game featuring second quest where you travel to Kanto, fully realized in 3D. November 2017.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. UK voice actors, in keeping with XC1. Game takes place on living titans instead of corpse gods. Global release: December 2017.

The Switch Virtual Console. Mother 3 localized into English as EarthBound Legends. Available by itself or with EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings in EarthBound Saga.

GCN titles also coming to Switch Virtual Console, starting with Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros Melee. Melee now has online.

Details on Nintendo's online service plan. For $24.99 a year, you can play games online and access an upgraded version of Miiverse on Switch. You'll also have free access to select Virtual Console and eShop titles each month, for the duration of the month.

A look forward to 2018:

New IP by Retro Studios. An atmospheric first-person shooter with an emphasis on melee and traversal mechanics. 2018.

A remake of the first Pikmin. Expansive world; longer days; new Pikmin type (GREEN) and enemies. Olimar is not alone; two other captains are stranded with him. Switch between trio like in Pikmin 3. Play the campaign in co-op. Playable with a single Joy-Con. 2018.

Fire Emblem for Switch. Multiple SKUs, each their own story and campaign, like Fates. 2018.

Animal Crossing for Switch. Immerse yourself in world with optional ground-level camera. Rotate camera to see sides and backs of buildings, and look south. Fence in yards and landscape property. Hold block parties. Juggle part-time jobs. Develop infrastructure with proper roads. Up to four players can work on same town in local splitscreen MP.

ONE MORE THING: Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch. Sakurai explains this is the definitive edition of the game. "The Nintendo Switch is both a handheld, and a console. As such, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch, we have included the contents of both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for WiiU. All of the DLC for both games is also included. But that's not all."

Proceeds to reveal that Ice Climbers are back. He explains they weren't possible on the 3DS due to hardware limitations, or on WiiU due to hardware limitations in 8P.

Another new addition: The Inklings, from Splatoon. They also weren't possible in the other games, due to the hardware demands of their ink splatter effects. They join the battle with their kid-to-squid powers. Like the Mii Fighter, they come in several classes: Splattershot, Roller and Charger. And like the Mii Fighter, you can customize elements of them, such as their sub-weapons and specials. Also, the "Gear Sync" feature checks your Switch for Splatoon 2 save data, and allows you to import the appearance of your Inkling from Splatoon 2.

Other surprises still await, Sakurai teases. But here's a glimpse of other features, including a stage hazard toggle, and a tag-team mode where you choose several characters and switch freely between them mid-battle. Also releasing alongside the game: Wavebird Joy-Cons. The GCN adapter is also supported.

Close with a trailer for Bomberman in Smash. And then the kicker at the end: Snake returns from Metal Gear Solid. "Kept you waiting, huh?"

I really pray this happens.... Man I really want to see Bomberman in Smash...

Nintendo will continue to say that E3 is about 2017 games and people will complain when the 2018 games are not announced next month.

Why does everyone think Retro's game won't be out until 2018? This fall will mark 4 years since Tropical Freeze was finished, and most of Nintendo's studios including Retro operate on a 3 or less year cycle.

Nintendo will continue to say that E3 is about 2017 games and people will complain when the 2018 games are not announced next month.

We've been over this, "a focus on 2017 titles" indirectly confirms there will also be titles outside of that focus, meaning 2018 titles. That's exactly what the term "focus" has meant when Nintendo announces a presentation.

I don't think there will be any surprises this year. I miss the Nintendo that used to surprise me with something unexpected. I hope that at the very least Mario looks as good as Mario Kart and is 1080p. The early footage looked rough almost like a higher resolution Dreamcast game. It reminded me of the first Sonic Adventure.

People expecting big announcements are going to be disappointed. We already know Nintendo's plans for 2017: Arms, Splatoon, Mario, FE Warriors, Zelda DLC, and maybe Xenoblade 2. I highly doubt they have anything else big. There will not be Animal Crossing, Smash, etc.

Retros game is going to be shown this year. It's been FOUR YEARS. Why are people even doubting it?? Retro only shows their game at E3. This year it will be shown.

I love my switch but among the 4 big remaining Nintendo games announced for 2017, 2 are mostly competitive/online games. Since I am not into this kind of stuff, I really hope they will announce 1 or 2 more single player oriented games for this year.

Hopefully we'll get something on Skyrim, although I'm not sure whether we'll see it on Nintendo or Bethesda's conference.

It'd be neat to see some Nintendo customizations/mods like Zelda themed weapons.

Man... If Skyrim doesn't bring Nintendo-themed content that'd feel like a missed opportunity

... it's E3!! The only year in recent memory that Nintendo didn't have a big new announcement was last year and that was due to Breath of the Wild. (I don't consider Ever Oasis to be a "big" new announcement)

And why do so many people assume the games we know of are going to be the only ones coming in 2017? Smash is possible, Pokemon is highly likely, Mario x Rabbids is all but confirmed... And those are just the games we've actually heard something about (from insiders).

Yeah I really don't understand this pessimism. There are a lot of Nintendo's studios unaccounted for.

Yup I agree there. I'm thinking that could go either way but I really hope they do.

E3 2014 announced Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Bayonetta 1 on WiiU, Super Mario Maker, and Splatoon. New games do get announced at E3, even when the advertised focus is something else (in that year's case, Super Smash Bros).

Hopefully Treehouse Live lasts all three days this year. I couldn't find comfirmation on Nintendo's tweets, however their Finnish site says that Treehouse is broadcast from 13th to 15th. Hopefully so, as I love Treehouse Live.

Except it doesn't confirm anything. When someone says they are going to give a presentation that focuses on subject A, that doesn't guarantee that subject B will come up. Nintendo said at E3 2015 that they are looking forward to talking about more about the NX next year, but yet at the Nintendo Direct later in October people were screaming that there was no NX info.

I would love to be wrong. I hope we get a little sneak peak at 2018 from Nintendo, but from what Nintendo announced this morning, I expect their digital event to be about games coming out between June and the end of 2017.

It doesnt guarantee they WON'T show 2018 titles either. They didnt say focus exclusively on 2017 titles. It could go either way.

This is why marketing and PR people have to choose their words real carefully.

Right.

Except with the NX they explicitly said they'd talk about it next year and that was true. Last year when it was 'only' Zelda they explicitly said "we are only bringing Zelda" and only changed that to include a few 3DS games after the fact. However, every time Nintendo's said "focusing on ____" its been met with people saying it will be only that when it rarely turns out to be true. The last example being the previous Direct which everyone was saying would be only ARMs and Splatoon when the Direct itself had a bunch of new announcements. I'm not expecting their entire 2018 lineup to be shown off, of course, but Nintendo's not stupid, they know a few surprises will get the hype in.

Canadian listings of Mario Odyssey have gone up $20 (to $99.99). Not sure if price error, not sure if Nintendo trying to predict exchange rates or not sure if they plan to force an amiibo on everyone.

Where are the third party games?

I noticed this article on Nintendo of Europe's website links to http://e3.nintendo-europe.com/. It currently redirects to a language selection page, status code being 301 Moved Permanently.

It should be up soon hopefully.

Why put melee with online on the switch and then release a another smash bros? makes no sense based on what Nintendo has previously done.

Pretty excited!

As an aside, why do they say "the first sandbox Mario game since Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine"? Those two games were a generation apart. Wouldnt it make more sense to say, "the first sandbox Mario game since Super Mario Sunshine"?

Definitely a nice set of predictions you laid out here. For me, if the 3DS was going to be apart of this spotlight, it would be nice to show off a bit of Monster Hunter Stories, use the time to tell everyone when it will be coming out, and then wrap that up by either telling people that we're also getting Double Cross for the West, announce that there will be a "Switch Version" coming soon, or (what I would guess would happen at TGS) MH5 for Switch.

Other than that, all of the things you wrote do have their own merits to them: From the games that we know will be coming out in Summer, rumored games that will be revealed at said time, and possible games from the Wii U that would be brought over to the Switch as a "definitive edition" since Pokken would most likely get a switch version that would have all the pokemon that were added on in the arcade. Can't wait to see FE: Warriors and how many different heroes we'll see playable (also would be nice to see Hyrule Warriors for Switch too that could carry over stuff from the 3DS over to the Wii).

Then for the Smash guess, if that were to happen that we get "Smash for Switch" they might as well drop literal bombs of possible new characters, and hopefully allow even more 3rd party characters into the mix. Hopefully it will have been enough time for Konami to get off their high horse and make those arrangements (if this does happen) for what you suggested in terms of Snake and Bomberman (to have a returning favorite and another unique character). Ice Climbers seem likely to return too if there's no connection thing with 3DS versions, and Inklings do go without saying. I'd like to think that the Smash Ballot probably could have been used between the end of 2015 to now to not only make deals to add in more possible characters, but to perhaps bring in more possible surprises like Bayonetta. Kind of funny how people thought Cloud won the ballot. Definitely would blow people's minds if we find out if a certain "Bear-Bird" duo got the chance to join in. People would lose their minds if that were to happen.

...

I'm probably getting more hyped than I should... Yeah, E3 is going to be big with the Scorpio, Nintendo with their Year 1 stuff for Switch, and the arsenal that Sony is about to unleash, but I don't want to set those expectations so incredibly high that when it is all said and done, I'm left questioning if they had done enough.

We are a month away! :D

Yes! I want this to be true. I want three days again. Last year I understand they didn't have much content, but this year they a lot more games to show off.

Super Mario Odyssey on Treehouse day 1. Retros game on Treehouse day 2. Mother 3 on Treehouse day 3.

Such a Nintendo thread, debate over a sentence which states a focus on 2017 titles = they won't show any future content.

We all know they will have teaser trailers or announcements,

So you think Nintendo announced all their 2017 Switch releases in January?

No...but I have a hard time seeing much more than Zelda, Mario, Kart, Arms, Splatoon, Xenoblade in one year. And then we have rumors about Stars and Smash already.

So...another big 2017 title? I doubt it or it is probably among the heavily rumored titles. More 2017 titles? Sure, perhaps some smaller ones.

I'm also more curious about 2018 for third party support. I just don't believe we'll suddenly have tons of Japanese titles fall 2017. Those are going to come 2018 earliest, imo. And I want to see that they are coming.

I can't help but chuckle how the reactions between Nintendo and Sony's E3 announcements are completely polar opposite of each other lol.

I guess people love games being announced in the near future that take 2-5 years to release.

Pretty excited!

Probably for security hype.
One of those games is universally praised while the other is polarizing.

If Nintendo shows Smash 4 Switch and Sony shows Bloodborne II, this will officially be A Good E3™

(Seriously, either would blow my mind, but both would MELT it)

I'm in that same boat as you. When I look at Sony's conferences, I'm looking at games that aren't going to be out anytime soon, thus they are relying on multi-platform titles to hold them over until they do actually get released. That said, no denying that when they do come out, they do (mostly) deliver. Exceptions apply of course, but at least Sony knows how to play for the long haul (although they do need to think a bit short termed as well for the sake of the here and now).

Like I said, Nintendo usually doesn't announce ports in an E3 presentation, because why would you announce a port as big release at E3?. Ports are usually lower priority announcements saved for other events like Nintendo Direct, or if they do show up at E3, they're almost always stealth announcements. I mean, Nintendo didn't reveal Twilight Princess HD in their 2015 Digital Event for a reason.
HW Legends was featured in their last non BOTW e3

nearly two years since sony "won" E3 in 2015 and only one of the three big games they announced are out lol

Some of this is plausable, but some is also hard to believe. For example...

Why do people keep insisting that Pokemon Stars will be a Switch game? It won't, if it's real, it's going to be a Nintendo 3DS only game. Game Freak loves supporting older hardware for a long time before Switching. It'd make much more sense to start the Switch off with a new generation.

There's also no way they'd spend this much time at the end dedicated to a port. We've been through this, ports have no place in an E3 Presentation/Conference. If we do see Smash for Switch, it's going to be announced sometime other than E3.

HW Legends was featured in their last non BOTW e3

But it was announced before hand Koei Tecmo. Plus, they didn't spend any time on it either, all they said was "BTW, Legends is coming to 3DS. k thnx bai!". It's not the same as unveiling it for the first time and showing extensive footage of it.

Maybe confirm wasn't the right word, but when I look at legalese that says, "X and Y will be shown, with a focus on X and Y in 2017" that says to me that there will be some ancillary discussion of X and Y not in 2017 (aka in 2018+). That's how I read that in general.

However, with Nintendo, every time they have used the phrase "with a focus on" there have been announcements outside of that focus. The most recent example is the April direct which was focused on ARMS and Splatoon 2. Yet there were plenty of other Switch announcements.

So expect some 2018 announcements, if only teasers.

Some of this is plausable, but some is also hard to believe. For example...

Because Eurogamer reported that Stars will be a Switch exclusive, and their Switch related track record so far is flawless. Tom Phillips recently re-"confirmed" it on Twitter too.

I can't help but chuckle how the reactions between Nintendo and Sony's E3 announcements are completely polar opposite of each other lol.

I guess people love games being announced in the near future that take 2-5 years to release.

I don't want far off stuff. I want 2018 stuff. I think we may get some. But the wording is 2017 and I think 2017 is already full up on Nintendo stuff so...I find it difficult to expect much in the way of surprises and new announcements of a sort to excite me.

And again...I also doubt that the third parties I care about are suddenly going to have stuff for fall 2017. So 2018 is where I'm looking there too.
