Oxford student spared jail after stabbing boyfriend had two other assault charges.

So 1 stabbing is justified because of the stresses of med school? This board...this fucking board

Shiiiit I went to law school. That should have given me a pass for at least half a stab. I fucking missed out.

This chick probably has a raging personality disorder which could potentially respond to treatment (although if she's antisocial that would be a tough nut to crack.) My bet's on borderline.

I went to SCAD. I'm not saying it's as strenuous as law school, but its secondary acronym is "Sleep Comes After Death" for a reason.

So do I get a half-stab too? I'm black, but I'm also a short-ass woman. I look like a child. So that should tip things back in my favor right?

The pictures in the Sun article are terrible. What have her Facebook photos got to do with anything? If she were a PoC, unattractive, poor or any combination of the three you'd see you'd see the least flattering photos possible... though you'd likely be seeing them in a "Benefit Scrounger gets jail after horrific knife attack" article instead. This is an example of all the worst privileges biases Britain has to offer in one neat package.

And if you put all those things on a minority their chances of getting this same leniency would be greatly diminished. They even ignored her history...damn.

All i see are a bunch of people tripping over themselves coming up with excuses to try and diminish the role racism plays in life.
It's easier with people of your own skin colour to not compare them to other races, to treat them as the default, which is just another facet of racial prejudice.
People then argue that nobody's looking at whites' skin colour, without realising that that's the racism. It took me some time to come to this myself, even.

I'm pretty sure the world can do without one person of her talent. We've come this far without her in the field, we'll manage without her just fine. Hell, given her track record of violence, we might be better off!

Agree with you and yet people still defend her. Guess being pretty and white gives an advantage for them.

Appreciate this and to add to this some do what yoshi is trying to do. Keeping it at this one case you can dispel race because they eliminate any way to compare it to statistics.

This woman really should not be anywhere near caring for other people. Being a physician/surgeon is far more than just possessing good technical skills and grades in school. Given her history (even before knowing about her drug abuse and pathological lying), she would be at significant risk of harming patients. There is a reason why someone's history is important when applying for a medical license. It doesn't matter how hard you worked or studied before, at the end of the day, one of the fundamental aspects of being a physician is to do no harm. She is far to much of a risk to uphold this principle without undergoing significant therapy/rehabilitation. Even, then, I would still be cautious approving her medical license as this is more likely a personality issue rather than anything that can be treated.

The stress of medical school alone does not cause you to stab other people. I can't understand how anyone can defend her. It would be different if she just had a substance abuse problem, but there is so much more that is wrong here.
Would you really want this psychopath operating on you or a loved one? do you trust that she has the ability to stay calm and adapt if something goes wrong while caring for a patient?

How does a Judge oversee a case where someone went over the edge and stabbed them amongst other violet events and go, "Hmmm, wait she wants to be a doctor? Clearly this was a one off!"

It's like when a girl got raped at a high school event by 4 boys and on the media they kept spousing how this offense will put a blockade on promising careers. No fucks were given to the victim. Like how do people rationalize the acts of violence Kiel this as okay?

It's Britain dude. It's a fucking shit hole filled up with tacit passive aggressive racists that worships the class hierarchy harder than any other modern democratic country.

Should have went to Moore, but they again they have that saying "Moore women never party."

Lol, drop the act.

Nah, I'm being serious. I've seen a lot better looking girls down my local Tesco. She's got lot of makeup on in the first picture. The unflattering picture of her in river with mother's marigolds on is far more realistic. She isn't ugly, but she's hardly stunning.

This is relevant to the thread because...

Who gives a shit? She's not ugly and that's enough for her to benefit from preferential treatment

Because I've seen a few people refer to her attractiveness as one of the reasons she got off lightly.

It is one of the reasons.

Her race, her gender, her youth, her career path, and her attractiveness all put her in the "least likely to be dangerous" category in people's minds, and what's more, it has affected the outcome of her trial. Pretty young white women are the people in the world who everyone is least scared of.

All you stab happy capitalist scum!
I believe all men, women, and children are credited one stab equally!

StabSocialism4Lyfe!

Lol

So you think if she wasn't white, but still considered to be "attractive" and from the same social class then she'd be doing jail time?

Where are you going with this? That user's point, as well as many other's in here, is that her being being white is a large factor, in addition to her gender, social class, and a number of other things to varying degrees of importance.

Jesus its getting harder and harder to lurk peacefully on Gaf with some of these horrid comments you come across. ConfusedMrKrabs.meme

Didn't even bother giving her some form of Probation shit is crazy..

I think it's less about her being white and more about her social class and her being an Oxford student. If she was a white girl with model-like looks but happened to be a member of the underclass who lived on a council estate then I doubt she'd be spared.

All this boils down to is presentation. I wouldn't be surprised if the judge looked at her like she was an innocent sweet thing that got mixed up with some ruffians along the way home. While race, being pretty (or "standard" looking") and wealth can tip the scales into your favours, presentation can definitely help.

It sucks that teachers are so undervalued in our society because I could have probably used a good stabbing sometime over the last couple years during my masters tbh

Who's going to employ her? Google her name and you get headlines with phrases like "stabbed", "lied about cancer", "hooked on cocaine" and "previous assaults". Her name's tainted.

If she acts fast enough while Britain is in the EU, she can get the result that come up with her name scrubbed.

Is it that easy to escape your unpleasant past in the digital age though? Sure she may be able get Google to delete links, but what about social media? I just don't think it's that easy to reinvent yourself these days.

No but if she doesn't get an offence on her DBS or CRB, she's pretty much won.

Let me get the facts straight before I weigh in.

  • So first conviction.
  • College student.
  • Convicted of unlawful wounding, a class 3 felony, which is the lowest level of felony in the UK.
  • Conviction was light but not unheard of.
  • Prior complaints assaults were lie on file, which means that while the judge believed that the cases could have gone forward due to the amount of evidence, but formal charges were never brought.
  • Everything else, including the cancer thing and the drug usage, is just hearsay.

Am I missing anything?

I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly) that doctors in the UK worked for the National Health Service directly. So they might not care so much about stuff like that.

Yep anyone from the under class would be sharing a small room with a convicted drug addict or a murderer, basically destroying any future prospects they had.
