Game soundtracks on vinyl | Analogue Gen 33fps

Gunstar is both one of my all time favorite games and all time favorite game soundtracks, and Data-Discs is one of my favorite record labels, so yes, I'm going for the limited edition this time, shipping be damned.

I'd prefer they were doing two releases at a time, but I get the logistics can be tricky.

It's gone up within the hour Data Discs' posting in the past. Guess there's no guarantee but it's been consistent for the last 5 releases or so.

While this is true, it appears that it may be different now?
On Facebook, someone asked, "Will this be available from Mondo as usual?"
DD's response was, "Yes, next Wednesday."

Still perfectly fine for those who aren't interested in grabbing the LE.

Hmm, maybe. That'd certainly be a new pattern. DD may just be saying that based on Mondo's usual and advertised "new music" days, which is Wednesday. Occasionally, they post stuff on non-Wednesdays too, and DD releases have been among those.

Guess only time will tell. If you're not holding out for limited editions then you're probably fine to wait.

Got my Transistor today. Looks gorgeous, but this makes two vinyls in a row I've gotten where the record sleeves have rips. Last one was for Castlevania 3. I emailed Mondo and never heard back. Now with Transistor, it is both sleeves, both ripped twice---center left and center right, as if the record were too large for the sleeves so they ripped at seams. Kind of irritated.

I'd contact Supergiant about that. They're pretty responsive. I got in touch with them about my order not shipping yet and turns out that they shipped it media mail rather than priority, so they refunded the entire shipping cost. Wish I had it earlier, but that works. Based on what the rep said, it sounds like they're in a little over their head with the vinyl, so they might be willing to help you out.

I like the art! Still yet to be known how they fit so much music on 2 LPs.

The hard part isn't making it fit. You could squeeze in 45 mins per side if you wanted to. Hard part is making it sound good, and this is what worries me with this release. I really want this to sound awesome, but 30 mins per side seems like pushing it too much.

Data Discs did a nice little interview with Games You Loved (.com)

Q. What made you decide on vinyl over compact discs? Is there any particular philosophy behind the label?

To us, vinyl is anything but a “retro format”; it’s always been relevant and vital to the kinds of music we enjoy. As for our label philosophy, fundamentally we’re a record label and not a merchandise company, which is something we hope is reflected in our pricing and general ethos. We consider our records to be standalone albums, rather than nostalgic souvenirs or novelties, and we hope that people beyond the gaming community find them accessible and enjoyable. It’s just interesting, pioneering electronic music on a format that, besides being our favourite, also compliments the audio in new and interesting ways. In many ways, we’re a DIY label in the traditional sense. We just happen to focus on audio sourced from video games.
I fucking love these folks. <3

I think that is 50% correct. :)

Mondo's pricing for stuff like Castlevania, Contra, and Silent Hill have been pretty decent, in my opinion.

edit: one thing I just noticed about Gunstar Heroes is that the LE is on 140g vinyl, while the solid colors are 180g. I think all previous LEs were 180g, weren't they? Not a deal breaker, by any means, but I wonder if it's to keep the costs on their end identical across all three options.

Data Discs da best.

I mean, I would heavily argue their decision to put individual releases out for Castlevania I and II (and priced as they were). And everybody here know I'm not a fan of them using their poster artists instead of sourcing original art. Like, look at how good the Gunstar Heroes album art tells you that it's Gunstar Heroes compared to the disconnected masturbatory diarrhea of Castlevania III's album art.

Q. Can you talk us through the process of making a release?

For the captures, we tap the audio at the chip and bypass the console’s inbuilt pre-amp, opting instead to use our own high quality pre-amps to reduce noise and bring the levels up. Then our general mastering duties involve taking care of the dynamic range and timings, phase incompatibilities and any problematic areas in the frequency range (often there are unpleasant sounds that you wouldn’t notice through a TV, but become distracting when played on a standalone hi-fi setup). We also make some creative choices to bring together the body of the sound and ensure that everything suits the vinyl format.

What about the Mega Amp though?!? ;)

Well, I've never been a 180g snob (some of the best sounding records in my collection are thin pressings from the early 80s!), but I was already leaning towards the solid colour, so I might just go that route.

Looking at the official flac soundtrack for Witcher 3 from my GOG version, it's 35 tracks for a total of 1 hour 20 minutes 50 seconds. Sooo... yeah. Doesn't sound like it's missing anything?

Also, the music from Blood & Wine and Hearts of Stone is arguably better than the base game. Would be cool to release those as well. *shrugs*

Agree about CV1 & 2. Those should have been a single 12". But as individual 10" records, the pricing wasn't bad ($20, as I recall).
Their art is hit or miss for me. CV1 & 3 are weak. CV2 and Contra 3 are fantastic. Silent Hill is somewhere in between.

Disconnected masturbatory diarrhea is my favorite phrase of today, though. LOL

It sounds like there will be a special edition of that Witcher 3 album, that comes with an extra LP of the Heart of Stone DLC soundtrack. It'll be on red and blue vinyl and is exclusive to some German site called Gaya (EDIT: Seems like they only distribute, so I'm not actually sure where this will be available from). Don't know if it goes live on the same date as the 2LP version.

Castlevania II is like seven minutes long, repeated twice (if you even want to count the unlistenable Famicom Disk version). For $20.

I do agree with the Castlevania II and Contra III art, in those two instances they really mimicked the style of the original artworks, superb stuff there.

I might buy this even though I really don't get the hype for the OST. Sounds pretty standard to me.

Ordered Risk of Rain from Limited Run Games yesterday.

You do realize 1h20min is not 120min :D

If its a typo and the soundtrack is 80 minutes we are fine.

Get!!!

looks like they fixed the e-mail problem too, didnt used to get the UK e-mails because of my e-mail address or something.

edit: How is the Mondo Silent Hill release btw? Is it a decent pressing?

Ugh, didnt get a code either :( previously they have always been on time. Goddamnit, hopefully there will be limiteds left from the US stock...
There's always three sets of LEs. UK/world password, US password, then public.

Really hoping I get my US password right away (in two hours) :)
