Where would those first party surprises even come from? Unless MS has been building up studios in the shadows without anyone noticing, we know what to expect.

I hope they have some second party deals in place.

I feel like one of the few people who really likes Microsoft's current output. I use my Xbox primarily for third party games and streaming services, so exclusive games are just icing on the cake. I definitely understand why someone who wants to play on just one platform would want more, but I'm happy as is. Hence why I'm not really expecting them to bring out any big surprises this year.

Next year however... I have high hopes for next year.

Cool. State of Decay 2 is I'm interested in a bit, not interested in yet another Forza, Crackdown Im unsure and I stopped participating in the Sea of Thieves alpha.
What do you like about Xbox then? Not trying to be funny.

Even if you prefer 3rd party titles, the Scorpio will be the place for them.

Yeah, I agree with you. I read that article last night and now I'm feeling a bit conflicted. I just don't care about the few games they've been releasing lately. Although I do like the OS, controller, XBL, etc. Not really sure what I'll do now.

I came over to XB1 as a previous PS4 owner, and am increasingly finding the two systems to be more complementary than they appeared at earlier glance. PS4 is delivering on the high-budget, high-quality, cinematic AAA single-player-heavy games, while XB1 is delivering on services like BC and Game Pass. I'm thoroughly enjoying both right now. Currently rocking Horizon, and have a bunch of great single player games in the backlog, and have accumulated a ton of 360 titles and am powering through Bioshock 2 for the first time with my trial of Game Pass (it's fantastic).

If MS is just focusing everything on the short / near term, then I think that's a missed opportunity. They have to talk about some things on the horizon or show it in a reel at least. Yes, focus mostly on games we can pay within say 6 - 9 months but there's gotta be stuff on the horizon to give gamers hope that they should make or feel good about their investment into the ecosystem.

Yeah, I think it would be a mistake not to show the more inchoate stuff. XB1's been losing a lot on mindshare, and there has been a non-negligible amount of noise made about its exclusive/first party situation. They would do well to dispel that by showing a game or two in that ilk. By and large, they can get away without doing so; they've still got their base which is becoming increasingly anchored to the brand via the excellent services, and third parties exert a greater influence than first party. But I don't believe for a second that continuing to evoke an appearance of dwindling first party content isn't slowly eroding good-will in a way that may be hard to measure in the short term but can have significant effects in the long term. The difficulty of measuring this effect in the short term may deceivingly suggest first party matters less than it really does, and I think some of the discussion on GAF that's corrected our understanding of the importance between first and third party has perhaps swung too far in the direction that first party is becoming underrated. If I'm an investor in MS, I appreciate their efforts in audience retention, but I want to see their vision for expanding their reach.

Controller, Xbox live, some parts of the UI, ecosystem. I liked some of their first party stuff from the OG and 360 days. I don't think Xbox is as good as it was or should be, that's my opinion.

Agreed. Well a big gap for me is a good exclusive RPG, but that would be all I want.

Asian games do nothing for me.

New game from I am Setsuna devs got announced for all platforms but Xbox.

I didn't like I am Setsuna but this just tells you how MS really fucked it up this gen with Japan. Spencer's visit probably amounted for nothing.

Man... All these ppl I'm starting to see that "aren't hyped for Xbox anymore", I just don't get it. Anyone that's gotten an Xbox should know what they're getting. The only thing I can see that Xbox is sorely lacking right now is Japanese support. Trust me, I want that more than anything. But that's why I also have a ps4, pc, and Switch(yes I know not everyone can afford every system). We've gotten a lot of great exclusives on Xbox already. Maybe not the beginning of this year, but definitely in the past. Don't forget that even tho ps4 is killing this year, they were sorely lacking exclusives for most of the beginning of its cycle (especially if you don't count remasters). This year we get Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves(maybe), and Forza 7. That's just the ones we know about. What genre are ppl wanting that will make them say "Xbox has games now!"? RPGs are the only thing I can think of, even tho we still have a decent amount of them. We've gotten single player story driven games, we have our FPS (almost too many if you ask me lol), we have the best racing games ever made, we get all major 3rd party support that will look and play the best on Scorpio (again, minus Japanese support), we have platformers, we have MMO's, we have horror, we have RTS, we have indies... Like, I seriously can't think of anything the Xbox is lacking besides the Japanese support. But let's be real here, if you got an Xbox expecting to play all the Japanese games, I'm sorry but you made the wrong choice. I think maybe Xbox could do better in selecting what games they're making (they're sitting on a gold mine of IPs) but I've still had plenty of games to play on Xbox. All I keep seeing is ppl wanting "new IPs", but when Xbox releases them, no one buys them. Why do you think we won't get Ryse 2 (probly crytek's fault since MS did wanna buy the IP but Crytek said no), sunset overdrive 2, quantum break 2, Recore 2, etc. I'm praying to the gods that Phantom Dust 2 has hope since it's at least the top free game for now. Also, I think a console is more than just games now. It can be the services they offer. We get EA Access, Game Pass, 360 BC, Refunds on digital games, Early Access/Game Previews, Xbox Clubs, Looking for Group (a life saver for Friday the 13th right now lol), Arena (should be more fleshed out by the end of the year), party chat overlay(extremely helpful when playing with new ppl), and I'm sure I'm missing some other cool features. It's just crazy to me how many ppl are "done with Xbox" because this E3 might not be 10+ new IPs shown. I feel it's like Scalebound all over again. Ppl only making big deals of it when they want to. I never heard this "Xbox has no games" when Sony was hurting for exclusives at the time. I bring up Scalebound because the game had no following on here (or even on Xbox reddit) when Zeta made a thread for it. But it gets canceled and all of a sudden, "it was gonna be the best game in the world! Why did you do this evil Microsoft!?" Yes, I wanted to see it and I thought it looked really fucking cool. But after every time they showed it, all I ever saw was "that looked awful. That was underwhelming. Geez, performance is horrible. Character is cringe to the max. That combat looks boring." Gee, I wonder why they canceled it...

Phil Spencer be like:

It's all just business. We have a long term vision for Xbox and we are building towards that. Japanese games are great but not the strategy.

You act as if the 360 was doing outstanding in Japan. If you bought an Xbox one assuming they would get every Japanese developed game, then I don't know what to tell you. Spencer's trip will probably yield the bigger non FF games that wouldn't come to the console but stuff from Tokyo rpg factory wasn't likely ever gonna come out on the Xbox

Which would be a goddamn shame. After that visit he did tweet "I know I said this before but Japanese games are coming to Xbox." sure would like to know what games then.

For the first time ever this year Ive taken time off to watch some conferences (and giantbomb talk over them) very excited to see what Microsoft shows!

Well look, not everyone thinks like you do they? And yeah people ask for new IPs, why shouldn't they? That goes for any publisher. You say no one buys them and use the likes of Ryse and Recore as examples, if they are not very good, why should people buy them? Look at Recore, people are still waiting for that tank character which was trailered months ago and given how Microsoft just put it out there is any wonder why it never sold? Not to mention it received quite a few poor reviews. (I bought it and thought it was ok)

Ryse, the same, a once Kinect game under the working title Codename Kingdoms, it was received poorly by critics and wasn't a must have launch title. I think putting the onus on the gamer for lack of creativity or new IP at MS is a little unfair, how about they make better games??

The only one I can't disagree with is Sunset.

I think it's pretty simple actually: I want fantastic single player exclusives. Not saying it's realistic, but that's where things are at. So far, I've played several good ones but nothing amazing. The PS4 has IMO and Metacritic's too produced higher calibre stuff in Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, etc.

4 (or more) seamless coop for state of decay 2 with much better controls and limited glitches in an even better realized zombie world and ill be happy. Itd be awesome if they even make it where anyone in your group can access the game world you're sharing regardless of who is on that way people can collect resources or build fortifications and such. Kinda like a persistent server but only share amongst your friends.

Japan is a waste of time and money.

Don't be sorry, its not like you are offending here anyone other than your Avatar, Just curious to know about the Asian Games, All i heard was Japanese one. that got me confused.
My avatar is greatly offended that Scorpio doesn't have Zen.

Really!? that's a pretty big list of games for someone to not like that too based on regions.

Sure, but a lot of the games follow a specific art style that some doesn't find appealing while others love it.
Not saying that's leeh's reason.

SV3I5AU.jpg

I can't...

Give how he has reliable sources, the Scorpio stuff in particular shows this, I think if they did have big surprises he would be hinting at it, imo. Hope I'm wrong.

To be fair I posted that article in this thread yesterday and jokingly said I expect FM7 and that's it from them at E3. The thing about Jez is he obviously has good connections at Xbox so the last thing he is going to leak is something that they don't want him too. Good by relationships if he does, him downplaying first party could actually be a double bluff..... God I'm desperate, lol.

Thats exactly the reason for me, I'm just not a fan of the more Asian media. Anime, manga etc have never been my thing.

The only one I have, which can be barely classed as so, is Pokemon.

In my opinion I don't care about Nier. Sorry....

That's fine, but eventually the exclusive gap will yield a title or two or three that you will care about. That's what Sony is doing well. Personally, I don't care about Nier or Persona 5 either. However, I have enjoyed Horizon: Zero Dawn and Bloodborne far more than any XBox exclusive this generation. When your platform offers so many titles that appeal to so many tastes, you cast a wide net and pull in a lot of fish.

The reason you're seeing so many people seemingly falling out of love with XBox is that their gaming tastes are changing, either due to age, repetition, or some other factor, and XBox isn't offering them titles that align with their tastes. Instead, it is staying very much in that 'mindless fun with friends" lane, which includes titles like Ghost Recon, Dead Rising, State of Decay, etc. I enjoy those experiences from time to time, but there's also a lot of times when it's Saturday night and I just want to explore a great world and narrative, and that's what I'm not getting on XBox anymore.

The end result is the same:

Unless Microsoft steps up and starts publishing and making sure these games come to the platform themselves, they aren't coming. If your mainly a fan of Japanese games, there's no logical reason your primary choice of console would be a Xbox at this point.

And I say that as someone who believes there is a place for games like that on the platform.

Ha ha I would love you to be right dude, I think the Xbox community, we could do with a few unexpected great surprises :)

It's not that big a deal, the playerbase just isn't there on Xbox.

I mean, the writings on the wall when it comes to Japanese support for Xbox.

Nier just sold more than 1.5 million. Keep telling yourself that, Mr. Spencer.

Don't think Spencer is to blame here at all really. After all it was the developer itself that chose not to bother with an Xbox version. While previously they had said there might be a Xbox version depending on how it sold on PS4. Why they didn't just say "we won't bother with Xbox" right then and there is beyond me.

The only one I can't didageee is Sunset.

Well of course not everyone thinks like me. No two ppl are exactly the same :). I want new IPs, not negating that at all. However, I do think the games I listed were good and had good foundations to make promising sequels. I'm not blaming gamers only, but it's not surprising to me that MS won't fund new IPs or sequels to new IPs when they don't tend to sell well. I do wish they would take more chances though. Hell, Sony still released The Last Guardian after what, 10+ years of development or something? Sony def seems to be more lenient, but I do think MS has given us a decent amount of new IPs this gen. Just ppl seem to not like them apparently.

Well I couldn't care less about Metacritic scores personally. I've played games that score 6's that I've loved, and games that score 9's and 10's that I'm like "uhh, what?" It's all opinions :). Horizon was pretty good (and one of the most beautiful games I've played), I still haven't gotten around to U4, and Bloodborne is also amazing. However, I still think Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, and Recore were really good single player experiences. Yes, there were things wrong with each game, but sequels could've fleshed those problems out. :)

Where would those first party surprises even come from? Unless MS has been building up studios in the shadows without anyone noticing, we know what to expect.

I hope they have some second party deals in place.

If it comes from MS Global Publishing it is still classed as first party and that was from the head of Xbox.

That's true, but you build a base on your platform for those games by offering exclusives that people want. They're complimentary pieces.
I love how the rhetoric on GAF changes so frequently. It used to be about the best place to play 3rd party games and the most power in a console.

Ha ha I would love you to be right dude, I think the Xbox community, we could do with a few unexpected great surprises :)

Yeah, a couple of crowd pleasers would go down a treat!

I actually think they will have a couple at least, like they just have too. Would be a total mismanagement of the division from the top down if that were the case.

I just don't think they will ever have a "Year of Dreams" like Sony did a couple of years ago and although the internet went into meltdown two out of the three bombs they dropped still look a long way away and personally I don't want those announcements.

What I would love to see would be fantastic game play footage of SoT, CD3, FM7 and SoD2. Solid release dates for Cuphead, Below, Ashen and Tacoma - fuck it, just make it a Summer of Arcade with those four and at least 3/4 reveals of new games releasing throughout 2018. Fling it Mike Ybarra coming out to talk about new services and features (OG XBOX BC FTW) and finish off with Scorpio reveal and price.

I think that's a pretty great conference if im being honest, a Year of Dreams? No but then again I don't want to be waiting to play a game three years+ after its revealed. A happy medium is what's required and that's a hard thing to do.

I love how the rhetoric on GAF changes so frequently. It used to be about the best place to play 3rd party games and the most power in a console.

As I said earlier - people's tastes change. I think more and more people on GAF are now selecting one (or at most, two) major multiplayer titles to stick with, and surrounding it with single player experiences. This is in contrast to last generation where co-op and multiplayer ruled the day, and people jumped to the "game of the month" in multiplayer, whether that was Borderlands, Gears 2, the latest CoD, etc.

Or maybe not and I'm just projecting my own changes in habits to the rest of GAF.

Ha ha I would love you to be right dude, I think the Xbox community, we could do with a few unexpected great surprises :)

Yeah we Xbox fans really aren't that incredibly demanding. We're just hoping for a surprise game or two that makes you say "now this looks damn interesting." and whether we have to wait until late next year or 2018 I don't give a shit. Sadly MS seems to care just a bit too much about that.

Bringing back some good old games from Xbox would be great for starters. The question is how many gamers are actually interested in a game like Crimson Skies and Mech Assault? I would be very interested.

I feel the same with gaming habits, I've always put that down to having less time though, so I'd dedicate the time I can to the game I most like.

I wasn't calling you out or anything sorry, more the general attitude of the board.

It's crazy. Whatever happened to 900p, nah can't play it
Haha, yeah. Let's face it, 900p is pretty shit.

I'm gonna keep my hopes for Japanese game announcements in check as well now. Despite Spencer's comments on them.

I don't get it though, if anything a game like Nier would probably sell on Xbox, much more compared to a JRPG I'm sure. I get that the developer doesn't want to bother with it for Japan but what about the west?

It's Platinum. Scalebound cancellation also happened. So who knows, maybe the two are related?

It's crazy. Whatever happened to 900p, nah can't play it

Because not everyone has 4k TVs. As someone with a 1080p TV and no intention of upgrading anytime soon, the Scorpio proposition over an existing, cheaper Pro is much less than if I owned a 4K TV.

And that's really the key here. 900p on a 1080p screen is sub-native. A downsampled image is still 1080p on a 1080p TV. The extra resolution benefits are minute for 1080p owners compared to 4k TV owners.

Ah got it. I always thought the resolution debate was kind of missing the point - the bigger issue was the price gap between the two at launch.

Xbox fans gotta demand more from Microsoft. These type of threads always turn borderline sycophantic because fans want to give passes for terrible output and initiatives. That's hypocritical coming from me, cause I used to be that guy, but y'all need to look at the other side. PlayStation fans are demanding games and getting them. There's a clear pattern of response to consumer demand by Sony that Microsoft simply aren't bothering to do, and I don't know why. With all the resources behind Xbox, even without an unlimited war chest, they should still be able to do better.

Working with external studios just isn't going to cut it in the long run. Fans want assurances that the platform they buy into will be adequately serviced in terms of games, they want exclusives to validate their purchases, and the hardcore, that as we have seen at the start of the generation, that influences mainstream reception, they demand Microsoft invest more, they want first party studios to hype about, they want their counterparts to Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica and Sucker Punch and Japan Studio - and they also want new IPs to take the world by storm like The Last of Us and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

I have defended Microsoft to ridiculous extents in the past, and looking back I'm embarrassed to admit a lot of the responses in this thread weren't too different from my own. If this post comes across as melodramatic, fine, but I wonder at what point some of you get sick and tired of looking at what Sony and Nintendo are putting out and securing exclusively and comparing that with pitiful output of Xbox.
