Game soundtracks on vinyl | Analogue Gen 33fps

Indeed. They could have done that w/ CD's or even digital, had they chosen to do so. But Nintendo does what Nintendo does.

On another note, has anyone received their Ninja Gaiden sets yet? My wife ordered the SF soundtrack from Bravewave/Bigwax last week, and it arrived from France to the US, which is pretty quick, so I got to scratching my head.

I'm kinda wondering if they'd sell more units putting these LPs on a lower tier like £30 or £25 going forward. Everyone seems to put their vinyls on some high ass (I'll use USD for this) tier like $75-$100 and it's out of control. At that point, it's either so much of a sunk cost that I don't see the point in getting it, or I can just wait for the inevitable full pressing because I don't care that much about first edition pressings with few exceptions.

Hyper Light Drifter got here today and the set is really well put together. Haven't listened yet but am excited to. Despite being shipped via Media Mail it was in a thick box and bubble wrapped. Even included three stickers all of which are neat (one of the drifter, one of the logo emblem, and one of a sword).

If it sounds as good as Fez does I'll be very pleased. Can post photos later if folks are interested.
 
ugh!!! skips on vinyl records are the worst! The Worst!!!!

I buy a lot of used stuff so in that regards I expect it... can't win em all,

but why do they have to come on brand new stuff too?!?! Like 1 of every 10 records I buy has a skip... that's too many!!!

the most recent victim is Killer Cuts... I finally got myself a copy, but not only does it have a skip, but it's during my favorite song!! (The Way U Move)

wthell iam8bit! as if ppl dont already dislike you enough! hope no one has a skip after paying $100 for Persona or something...

1. Double-check your needle, sounds like it's getting worn out. They tend to skip a lot on even new vinyls with denser grooves.
2. Buy a vinyl brush (and a good alcohol-based cleaning liquid) and try to get off all static electricity.

I have a brush, and would imagine my needle has much more life left in it (how often to replace anyways??)

the thing about the skips tho are they're consistent; always in the same place everytime. Wouldn't this be fault of the record itself??
 
They don't have to deal with the licensing nightmare that selling a WipEout soundtrack would be by giving them away to the press, right? So these are not proof that a retail version is coming?

How old is your player/needle? What model player/needle do you have?

Not necessarily. I mean, that's probably the most likely thing... but to have so many new records skipping... is a bit odd. Have you measured the 'weight' of your needle? I bought one of these:

Well, that is just a single sided record and has one track from the soundtrack.
 
I've said it before and I'll say it again fuck moonshakes and shame on any of you guys who buy from him. He's terrible for the business and your support is the problem.

Edit: and in case you don't believe me you are literally paying money that goes straight into some jerks pocket instead of your favorite video game composer or the company who made the game. And that guy just takes NSF files that you can find on the internet (or in Pokemons case the files that are available on iTunes) and cuts them into a record in low volume so he doesn't get sued and his releases can later be flipped for absurd amounts of money.
 
Can't decide which Moonshake record I should buy. I want bananas but maybe Metroid 🤔

Edit: Bought the bananas. I'll try and buy metroid soon also.
 
Got my Witcher 2x LP from Thinkgeek today. So far the sound quality has been pretty good so no complaints there, but I was pretty disappointed that it came with seam splits on the top of the packaging. They packed it really well so it must have happened in shipping to thinkgeek's warehouse.
 
For anyone interested, the latest Retronauts (I think it's the Patreon one-week exclusive one, so it'll be out in a week or so?) features an interview/co-hosting with James Eldred aka Lost Turntable. Really knows his shit esp. re: VGM soundtracks, they also cover the S2S Darius and Data Discs' Gunstar Heroes releases.

Well worth a listen!

it's a year old, I have the ATLP120, and the default needle/cartridge is supposed to be super legit.

I have the weight on the tone arm set at 2g after balancing per recommendation
 
Witcher 3 vinyl on ebay. 2 LP. $49 or a $200 Buy it Now. I really want to bid just to stop Buy it Now from happening, and bid it up to $500 just to waste this guy's time for the next 8 days. Probably drag it on as long as possible after I win until he realizes I'm not paying. But I'm not that bored right now.

Mine skipped too and I thought I was going crazy! Its really disappointing.

There are a LOT of second hand vinyl listings on discogs that are way overpriced, and not just video game soundtracks. People think they can get the highest dollar for something that actively sells for a lot less (if you look at actual Sold Listings on eBay, or the sales history on discogs...for example)

Anyway... I dare one of you to "make an offer" to this guy for $0.99. :)

Anyone have a good entry level player? I have Rocket League, Darius, Banjo-Kazooie, Firewatch, Machinarium, Witcher, Guardians of the Galaxy, Stranger Things, and a couple more that I mainly collected because I like those soundtracks and thought it was at least good display pieces. I do want to actually listen to them though and don't know what's a good affordable player. Any help for a rookie is appreciated!

At bare minimum your best choice is an Audio Technica LP120 or a U-turn orbit. Both are good enough that if you set them up correctly you will not have to deal with skipping records or your records wearing down more quickly. If you do go with U-turn though you need a phono preamp (either built in or seperate) and the queuing lever isn't a necessary add on but unless you just love dropping the needle yourself it's pretty invaluable. There's a lot of lp120 clones that are exactly the same because the parts are all made by the same company and all based on the technics 1200. If you find something that looks similar but isn't audio Technica then I would look online before buying it just to make sure the company selling it's customer service is okay. One of these will cost you about $250-$350 if you need a complete setup (speakers and amp in addition to turntable) but both can be upgraded to sound and perform better down the road.

You can also look at a project essential II or a project Debut Carbon as the next step up. These however can cost you $300-$400 on the turntable alone.

Your other option is used and there's so many out there that it's hard to definitively say "look for this but avoid this". If you do want to go used I would stay local. Look up what's available on Craigslist and then researching what people say about the specific turntable/what is a fair price for it. It's very easy to overpay for a player and while eBay is an option, you probably want to see/hear for yourself that the player runs and plays without issue. Also unless the owner specifically tells you the cartridge (needle and headshell) are new then you will probably want to get a new cartridge before playing any of your records.

One used player manufacturer I can say I would avoid is anything by bang and Olufsen. Their players look gorgeous and can be bought for pretty cheap but the cartridge are proprietary and theres only one option for replacement that costs a few hundred by default.

Avoid any all in ones or the fairly tempting audio Technica lp60. These all are missing a counterweight (adjustable weight on the back of the arm that holds the cartridge) so you are left up to only the default factory setting which can very super widely and is usually too high. They also all contain the same type of heavy cartridge and don't have the versatility to exchange it for a better sounding one (even the default lp120 and U-turn cartridges are so much better). These both lead to your records wearing down more quickly and a lot of times can cause skipping in perfectly nice and new records. Also especially in the case of all in ones, your records will sound like garbage.

That's some good advice right there. I got a used Debut III in great condition for 100€ a few months ago and it's fucking bliss compared to the 80s piece of junk I had previously (I love you grandpa).
