Verge: Xbox E3 teasers contain hidden Project Scorpio messages (and sick PS4 burns)

Microsoft is certainly heading into E3 with confidence. We'll see if they have a message and reveal that justifies the hype around Scorpio. It's definitely metric tons more hype than Sony generated around the PS4 Pro.

This further convinces me that once the reveal is live, we will see Microsoft position Scorpio as a new generation console. Maybe the last generation, but one that will feature Scorpio and PC exclusive content sooner than we think. While I originally believed that Crackdown 3 would be a Scorpio exclusive, that really doesn't make sense. Even with a launch that sells out their entire supply, that's still not enough consoles to really support the game.

But maybe that is the point. Crackdown 3 is the only game I have seen that might mobilize XB1 and former 360 users that have jumped to the PS4 to embrace Scorpio as their primary console. And honestly, as popular as Crackdown was, that might still be asking a lot. Not releasing CD3 to the XB1 might alienate gamers instead of drawing them in, as it kind of undercuts part of what Microsoft's vision of generationless consoles.

But there has to be some point, just like in PC gaming, where devs feel free to develop for higher end hardware, leaving the old hardware behind. But it will take third party publishers willing to develop for Scorpio and PS4 Pro exclusively before a new generation is actually born. And Microsoft is hoping the 6 > 4 will turn the tables on where gamers mindshare resides.

I think the odds are, Microsoft is willing to consider Scorpio a soft launch, with Scorpio 2 ready to go the moment Sony announces the PS5, again trying to beat Sony in the power race. Will Sony adopt Microsoft's generationless consoles? Because the Scorpio 2 may be even more attractive as a console that just rolls every game you are playing onto the new platform, with maybe even better performance.

I have no idea if this is going to work out well for Microsoft, but as loyal Xbox gamer, I like that they seem to be doubling down on gaming consoles going forward.

The thing is, most of the hype I see is coming from Xbox diehards. I have a feeling Scorpio is going to do well at first, just like the Xbox One S, due to the most hardcore Xbox fans upgrading, but I think the masses aren't interested in the mid gen upgrade consoles. They want the cheapest option to play Fifa and Call of Duty.

Shaking my head. Does Microsoft really think that they can win back market share by winning the mid gen spec war? Consumers care about games, price, functionality, and ecosystem. Those who care that much about top of the line performance will mostly play on PC.

They need to show exclusives to rival Sony and demonstrate that Scorpio performance is drastically better on multiplats. Or a cool functionality hook that matters to consumers like the Nintendo Switch.

Also, I really hope that Flop War is not the modern Bit War.

Yeah, Microsoft should just sit back and do nothing. How dare they release Scorpio, Sony already "won".

If only they had some kind of large event they could showcase things other than the specs. They should do that!

Window store or Steam? ; - )

As sad as it is, there's a reason I keep my Xbox one around.

And it's not only because I can't sell it for a decent price.

Seems people are getting different results when searching the phrase depending on where they are. I received this:

1493270479

Clearly Australian and Canadian pricing confirmed.

I think the same thing.

I feel like a $399 Scorpio would be like the equivalent of the 16 GB iPhone, pairing very powerful hardware with an inadequate amount of storage.

I still think the real cost will be the same as XBox One launched at: $499. Maybe it would be like a 500 GB vs. 2 TB to get people to bite at the higher price.

I don't know about 399... What is the benefit of taking a loss on this for MS?

The can only produce so many boxes for launch, the initial shipments will sell out at $499 or even $599 and the majority of consumers will still get the base ps4 or xbox for the holidays.

You can then drop the price 6mo later.

Same, but I've warmed to 449.

It's so hard for me to get excited for incremental consoles after I feel a bit burned on the Pro. Also, where are people getting the $399 from?

Gonna need to see the games. Games are everything.

You would like to think so, fact is I really don't give a shit. I just found it funny the whole "burn" concept. Like you didn't get your hat handed to you when it was year 1 battle. Sit Down, be Humble.

There's nothing wrong with a subtle marketing jab. I recall Sony going after Microsoft a bit less subtle than that. It's fun, nothing to get upset about.

Yes, it does. Despite it's last-gen CPU, $399 is a proper value proposition for a 6 TF conspole in fall 2017, like $399 was a proper one for a 4,2 TF console in fall 2016. Is Sony going to lower the Pro's price tag? Of course they will, at least during holiday.

Yeah I get that, but I don't think it's that straightforward.

Setting aside the differences between the HW for a second, it's only gonna matter to the extent third party devs leverage it, right?

You've got games all over the map on Pro in terms of both resolution and framerate. And we'll likely have the same thing with Scorpio. The games (you'd think) would be "better"; higher res, framerate on Scorpio. (Although if I was Sony, i'd be not super happy if a game was 30fps on Pro and 60fps on Scorpio).

So what we're likely talking about is third party games that are various levels of higher upscaling and checkerboarding as compared to Pro.

So at the margins, if I'm either paying $300 or $400, and still not getting "true 4K," but I'm still getting things like 1800c that are, per DF, "very close to 4K" in quality, is it justified to spend the incremental $100?

That's why i'm not sure if it matters (for either MS or Sony), Sony will just be cheaper.

Don't know who lit the fire under Microsoft, but I haven't seen them get this aggressive against Sony before. If the Scorpio price mark is at what we might think of in regards of around $400, that would mean that Microsoft is really going to be going for Sony's neck.

All Microsoft needs know is some good exclusive content and they could actually have a good shot at taking down Sony in the 2nd half of the year (not counting the first half for obvious reasons)

So where in the teasers do they tease $400? I get the date info and the sick burn on Sony regarding the power of Scorpio, but not the price point bit. Btw, MS needs to hit $400 or risk making the PS4 Pro look like the more cost-effective deal, even if it isn't as powerful. $450 is a stretch and $500 and they might as well not even put it out.

Interested to see what they have in store for Sunday. Also lol at the sweatin' comments because of course companies don't plan out their fiscal years in advance or anything.

Why Xbox 10 though?

To fall in line with Windows 10 naming. Honest tho Xbox 10 won't be the name.

People keep bringing up the lack of games for Microsoft, but i'm content with what's already been mentioned. Give me Destiny 2 and a new Halo on Scorpio and i'm all in.

I still can't believe people expect more than 400. I'm sure they do want you to perceive it that way though!

The amount of tech for that price will be good but I have a feeling I'm looking at 550 Canadian just cause. I want this for my 4k tv

MS are down by roughly 25 million units and the gap between PS4 and X1 will CONTINUE to widen. You know why? Xbox brand does NOT appeal to the rest of the world outside of the usual US/UK. Same song and dance. They have a brand problem.

I'd be surprised if the current Xbox os doesn't share the same kernel as Windows 10.

that doesn't matter as much as the idea of being able to buy a game on one, and owning it for the other as well

it would just be market branding at this point

Google was matching just "X10S101" from something like megohmmeter instructions inside a magazine.
That cover has nothing to do with the price even if it ends up being $399

From excerpt:
"you're using the x 10 range . and two places to the left when you-re using the x 100 range. X10 S101 - MULTIPLIER"
