Holy shit at this article.

The title, and some quotes are just wow.

Since most of this only works with digital purchases, perhaps it is all just a stealthy way of bringing back Microsoft's historically unpopular attempt to kill game ownership.

MGS' releases have been high-quality, polished games, but - with the notable exception of the joyful Forza Horizon 3 - they've also been desperately unexciting
Yeah, there was nothing exciting about Sunset Overdrive.

Crackdown is a fan favourite, but it's another backwards glance. Rare's Sea of Thieves, at least, is original and ambitious, but it's easy to detect a lack of confidence in the way it's been shown so far. Where is Xbox's Horizon: Zero Dawn, or Breath of the Wild, or Bloodborne?
What exactly Horizon brought to the scene that made it exciting? At least Crackdown is doing something that no one has ever done before.

I also love how it's basically, Xbox indeed has some games despite we saying it doesn't, but they don't count because of our arbitrary reasons.

Yeah there is some serious BS in that article. The stuff about Crackdown is just odd. A game like that has a lot of potential and they just might surprise a lot of folks Sunday with it. Eurogamer sounds weirdly negative here. Yes MS needs a better and more stable first party input but wow talking about beating a dead horse here, every fucking soul by now knows this.

I think that bit about Zelda, Horizon and Bloodborne IS subjective but I think I can agree with it. As awesome as Gears 4 and FH3 are, I wouldn't call it their Zelda. However I can't say the same about Horizon ZD since I haven't played it long enough and Bloodborne really isn't for everyone, in no way.

I would be super surprised if the average Xbox-hating, PlayStation-loving GAFer cared about Crackdown, no matter how good it ends up being. They have definitely written off Halo, Gears, and Forza, so those games are never going to win over the non-Xbox gaming crowd.

So I agree with the author's point that Microsoft needs to invest in more new 1st-party franchises and take more risks. But not dumb risks like ScreamRide - actual games that have the potential to win over players from the competition.

I think journalists and gamers alike should keep pressuring MS to produce more original IPs and do a better job of supporting them. We all will benefit if they listen.

It's a great exclusive game. You have to own a PS4 to play it. X1 has nothing so far this gen even close to it.

Yeah Horizon is good. It's an open world game done right in a sea of other open world games that usually miss the mark in some way or another.

But the argument itself is stupid because it goes both ways. Where's Sony's answer to Halo, Gears, Forza Horizon or Ori? They don't have any of those yet either. It's list wars bullshit that doesn't really achieve anything.

Ori? There are several PS-exclusive Metroidvania games. Dust is the big one that comes to mind (though it's also on Xbox 360). Sony technically has an answer to Forza, though Forza is way better than Drive Club. But that was the article's point, that PlayStation gamers don't seem to care about Forza, Halo, or Gears. And by and large, they don't.

There's no need to downplay any quality game on either system, Horizon and a good number of XBO games included. No game will appeal to everyone, but that doesn't make it any less of a quality game.

As an American I respectfully disagree with Eurogamer when it comes to what games interest me from Microsoft. They love Sony way too much to be credible when talking about non Sony gaming. IMO

How many Metroidvanias with the quality of Ori though? I can't really recall any I played on PS4 that aren't multiplat. Also Dust coming to XBO is inevitable via BC. Drive Club isn't an answer Forza Horizon and neither is Gran Turismo.

But you're right about "PlayStation gamers". But I also think most people are set in their ways and a big new exclusive wouldn't change anything. Same goes for the opposite side of the coin.

Can't wait for Sunday. E3 is gonna be lit. I'm interested in seeing more of Sea of Thieves and really want to see Crackdown 3 finally. As a die-hard Halo fan, I'm interested in seeing if they have any TMCC announcements or at least some stuff for Halo 5. Not really a big Halo Wars person, but will always hope to see MS give us Age of Empires 4 someday. I'm fully expecting more than a few surprises from MS, so whatever. Keeping hype in check be damned. Would love to see a sequel to Ori announced. That game was special.

The market seems to agree with Eurogamer. If recent sales are indeed 2:1 in Sony's favor in the US, and 3:1 in other markets then it's hard to argue that frequently expressed opinions on NeoGAF are out of step with consumer sentiment writ large.

Microsoft absolutely, positively must turn a corner with the Xbox business. They seem to have the hardware well in hand this year, but they do need a solid exclusive lineup to go with it. Gears of War and Halo could continue to be evergreen franchises, but not without taking some risks that pay off. Like this year's Zelda. Or the new God of War, if early reaction is anything to go by. People are skeptical with good reason but it's certainly possible to turn the perception around. Just look at Nintendo now compared to a year ago.

Exclusive games only count if they're yet another narrative drive game.

No one gives a fuck about halo anymore, now that 343 has butchered the last 3 games

Gears 4 is nice though

I think it's time to remove Eurogamer from my news feed and stick only with Digital Foundry.

No most people don't care about halo after they shit the bed with 5. Most halo fans I know barely care about halo anymore. Unless they actually dont screw it up with 6, I suspect all you will hear is a meh.
The campaign didn't exactly blow everyone's mind, but the matchmaking has been a welcome and refreshing change from Reach and Halo 4 imo. I think it holds a lot of promise. I agree that a lot of people don't care about halo anymore, or at least that they are so annoyed by how much the game has changed that they don't have any hope for it nowadays, but a lot of people is not everyone. That's all I was really getting at when I responded.

I am wondering if the price of Scorpio matters that much. The hardcore will eat it up.

I feel like the winner of the rest of this "gen" is going to be the one with the lowest price point between the one s and the PS4. Don't sleep on those announcements being the most impactful.

If "nobody gives a fuck about Halo", then we're setting a bar high enough to eliminate games far bigger than Bloodborne.
People certainly care, but the issue I think with gears and halo is they don't seem as fresh and innovative than they used to. They feel like franchises on the decline. New IPs create a sense of wonder about what you might see next, where those franchises feels like they already played their best hands. Both gears and Halo have a ton of potential, they just need to do something more drastic to feel fresh again, not unlike what Sony is doing with god of war.

It arguably matters less this year as they should easily sell all they can ship irregardless of price. Going forwards, it needs to be fiercely competitive.

Having said that, the last thing they need is a lack of hype, and going hard on price from the off might be worth the hit... but wow that could be some hit - a couple of million units at even $50 less is an incredible amount of money to shrug off.

.

fun to play? amazing looking? boundary pushing (technically)?
is crackdown even doing that cloud computing destructibility anymore? or using the extra horsepower scorpio has now?

nothing to really pushing me to get a Scorpio and retire my xbox one at this moment

Yep. Sony has tried for best part of two gens to dethrone Halo alone. Forza merked GT. I would say that Uncharted could be seen as a competitor to Gears so Uncharted wins.

But yeah- cant wait for E3!

Yes it is and the Scorpio will have to use it too, that kind of destruction isn't going to be possible with local computing power.

Do people actually believe that it's still being processed in the "cloud" in real time with no lag?!

Oh dear oh dear...

Well the alternative is that the XB1 and Scorpio are way more capable devices than any of us would have thought.

So which of those realities would you prefer?

Love halo. Halo 5s multi was sublime. I stopped playing because of the server selection. Region filter 6 please 343.

I'll be there day one for 6. Plus, you just know that it is going to look stunning on Scorpio

Microsoft didn't give up on this project while they did for Fable Legends and Scalebound, both games were quite far along in development very likely. But they gave Dave Jones and team the time for it, i think that's telling. I'm kinda expecting and especially hoping we're in for a surprise Sunday and that this game will amaze many of us.

I was more thinking that the destruction will be dumbed down to a level where xbox will be able to do this.

IE nowhere near the level it once was - if at all.

But that processing in the cloud stuff ain't happening.

You should see how Eurogamer Italy share their articles on Facebook, they're straight up like a Playstation fan magazine.

On Scorpio having one more GB of RAM: "they managed to use less gigs between the OS and TV?"

I admit I may be a bit biased, but I'm not a "journalist".
