All those things don't really matter when MS have a cheaper console for those worrying about price. This is being made out to be a premium console, so expect a premium price.

This is not going to be Microsofts saviour and suddenly millions of scorpios will fly off the shelves due to price.

This is for those that want a powerful console, not want to build a PC and happy to pay a premium price.

If it's a cheaper console people want, they are more likely to buy a PS4, which is a stronger console than XB1. No, Microsoft needs to work to hit the sweet spot balancing price and performance.

Microsoft is clearly banking a lot on Scorpio. This isn't in a victory lap refresh like the PS4 Pro was to Sony. Scorpio, as it is in trending, is setting up to be the culmination of all the efforts Phil Spencer and his lot have put into reinventing the brand.

What Scorpio is meant to be and who it is for are both up in the air just a little while longer. Time will reveal the answers to both soon.

Let's say Scorpio is $499 can you build a pc for the same price that can play "4k" (whether it's true or not) and still get ~60 fps?

From what I've seen so far, there is some evidence that Scorpio's true 4K performance could pose a challenge to the likes of Nvidia's GTX 1070 and AMD's Fury X-class hardware. (...) Out of interest, we tested Forza 6 Apex with similar settings at 4K on GTX 1060, 1070 and 1080. Frames were dropped on GTX 1060 (and a lot of them when wet weather conditions kicked in), while GTX 1070 held firm with only the most intense wet weather conditions causing performance dips. (...) If Scorpio's GPU can hold native 4K and hand in results on par or better than GTX 1070, this is a seriously good result for a console.

That's the main reason why I don't expect it to be so cheap, in case these DF expectations turns out being real.

Does Matt work for MS? If No? likely a third party developer and yet somehow he knows exactly what is happening at MS?

There is keeping things realistic. But to act like he knows everything going on at MS is a bit out there.

He's not speaking from a position of authority he's just commenting as any member on GAF. If he claimed knowledge it would be different.

This character assassination shit needs to stop. Matt's reliable and measured, and he's expressed plenty of optimism for Scorpio. It's perfectly reasonable for him to measure in when someone else is making exaggerated claims, nor does it require others to lash out when he expresses his opinion.

Character assassination my ass. He comes in with criptic messages in threads shitting everything up and disappears. Basically contributing nothing where he can be called on, just FUD.

If it doesn't work out the way he claims he can basically disappear without owning up to his shit because he says nothing concrete, always vague anyone can claim shit.

CBOAT was unchallenged towards the end of his run here and people kept believing his bullshit until he was called out on it.

If your an insider and claim shit, back it up. Under NDA or fear of being discovered than shut up about what you know instead of winding people up online.

MS has always claimed it's a premium console. I expect 499$ for sure. Anything less is a pleasant surprise, anything more and they better limit production numbers.

Jesus people. I was literally talking about the confidence and certainty people have in their own predictions. I wasn't saying anything about the quality of the show.

So last year we got Tekken Tag Tournament free on e3 day. And I feel like there was something else, too.

Any guesses what we'll get this year?

I'm hoping.... either a new Ninja Gaiden announcement with 2 free to download and/or Cuphead free or heavily discounted for like $1 for a day.

A man can dream, right?

I'll post this again and no change from when I originally posted it months ago.

My thoughts from another thread.

TLDR: Maybe it 'should' cost $499. They have to hit $399 for reasons...

Ive no idea how much this will cost to make. I've no idea if MS will get a good ROI on the box.

I just do not see a scenario where they announce a $499 price.

This is for a few reasons.

1. Phil Spencer had the unenviable task of announcing the price in 2013. Forget all the Kinect, TV TV TV, and DRM nonsense. $499 did not wash. Remember his reaction? And the crowds? Watch here: https://youtu.be/B2zslQ9PWPQ

2. The One S is currently RRP $249 with a bundled game. It will likely, closer to Scoprio launch and the holidays, drop to at least $229 RRP. Maybe even lower. The Scorpio plays the same games, uses the same accessories. Can they 'sell' a 4k upgrade for potentially double the price?

3. The competition. The PS4 Pro RRP is $399. You can expect a bundled game and/or a a price drop approaching Holiday 2017 to say $349. At $499, Scorpio would be 25-43% more expensive. It would not wash.

So, putting aside how much this 'should' cost... I can not see a price higher than $399.

399€, microsoft has learnt from errors due to Xbox one pricing and needs to gain marketshare. Expect a ps4 pro price reduction 1 year after launch so 449 or higher could be a bit steep if sony's price strategy is price reduction when scorpio launches.

Positive roi would come from subscriptions, so they need marketshare.

No, you can't. And even if you could in the future it wouldn't be even close to being anywhere as silent as an Xbox One. And much larger. And consume more energy. PC gaming is great (and nowadays it mostly just works) but it is still not as comfortable as a console.

So, putting aside how much this 'should' cost... I can not see a price higher than $399.

And you should not. Phil is on record from a year ago stating that they had a price point in mind and built Scorpio around that. You'd have to be very stupid to create yet another $499 console two years after you failed miserably doing so. Every console ever released in the US at more than $399 has failed. There is no way they created Scorpio as a more expensive device, the lack of Ryzen is proof of that. But maybe they didn't want to create a "me too" situation and instead have designed for $349? The only reason why people think it will be more than $399 is because of PS4 Pro. And that's where their logic is so flawed: PS4 Pro doesn't cost 399 to make. Very likely not even close, considering the differences between it and the PS4 Slim. The Pro costs at most $70 more to produce than a regular PS4 (50 more for the APU, 10 more for RAM, 10 for wifi chips and other minor changes).

If Scorpio is $399 or $99 doesn't matter to me because I (or anybody else) will not able to build a whisper silent PC capable of 4K for that price that sports also a decent UHD BluRay Player. Of course a lower price would be better in terms of competition but the crowd that want to play Xbox games in 4K will buy this console anyway. If the ratio is the same as Playstation (20% of PS4 owners upgraded to the PS4 Pro) then this can be considered as a success imo.

With subscription gaming services being the flavor of the day, I can easily see MS going back to when it wasn't money made on the hardware that mattered; just whether or not you paid for the software. New gamers are introduced to the other productivity packages of Microsoft.

$399 (minimal profit on hardware, but newcomers to the ecosystem)

I have never won money betting on a horse

Seeing how PS4 Pro's share is "only" 1:5 I don't see enough interest in a beefier console to offset whatever losses they may have to take at 399 with subscriptions. You're asking for a lot of sales at that point and if history is anything to go by, better hardware isn't enough at this stage. It's not launch when both consoles released back-to-back.

If anything, new and fresh subscriptions should come with the sale of the dirt cheap Xbox One S console. Not with the enthusiast machine.

399 yes

But it will be Xbox One 4K

Don't know why thed trademarked the S logo though ...

I think they wanna make it sound like a big leap over the One and Ten does that. Adding 4K at the end of their current box's name just comess off as lazy and complacent to me. If MS is smart they're going to market this as much more of a leap than just being able to play in 4K like PS4Pro.

10 also brings in Windows 10 which they've been jonesing to tie into the Xbox brand. With 10 they can literally put on the top of every box: XBOX10/WINDOWS10. It's synergistic and simple. It also looks and sounds cool. It sounds new, and that's what MS should want right now.

If you watch via Mixer they're giving away some free stuff which is cool. No idea what yet but hopefully it'll be something decent.

Playing devils advocate here..

1. By drumming this thing up as the most powerful console ever, using hashtags like #feeltruepower and #true4k, it's clear to me MS don't mind announcing a $499 price. They're trying to market it as this 'beast', with the hopes that many people will expect it to be $499. And I doubt the reaction will be the same, due to the aforementioned marketing and the fact that it's technically not a new console gen (just yet). I know a lot of people on GAF and reddit seem to think it'll be $399 but go outside those bubbles and you'll find a lot of people don't seem to think that's the case

2. Yes. They know that the console they'll sell the most this holiday season is the One S. Price it at $499, they'll definitely sell less Scorpios but the margins will be higher and this comes back to their motivation with the box. As others have pointed out, I think they're trying to make more profit off the core customer, and that's exactly who the Scorpio is aimed at. It's not trying to regain market share, thus it won't be priced that way. It's simply a way to get a greater ROI on hardcore fans.

3. Again, comes back to marketing. They're pushing this as the most powerful console ever; they're trying to make this console a beast in your mind so that the extra cost vs the Pro is worth the extra money. And again, a lot of hardcore xbox customers will buy into that, and I'm sure others will too. Definitely not everybody though. Will be interesting to see if they price at $499, how Pro Vs Scorpio sales wise plays out.

I hope I'm wrong though, I want it to be $399 but as I've said earlier in this thread I've really changed my mind and am pretty set on it being $499

Interesting discussion, though.

I'm sticking with $449

It's definitely more likely but if MS is serious about getting back on top this thing is going to have to be competitively priced and only $399 gives that impression. Also don't worry, you know they're going to have a $499 version with a 5-terabyte HDD or some shit. And if it's called Xbox10 it should be 10-terabytes. Synergy.

Could be FF14.

And these guys want interviewed Spencer plenty of times.

Note he says new IP. FF14 wouldn't be that. Which makes me glad. A new exclusive nobody sees coming is definitely something MS needs, whether first party or a deal with a third idgaf.

Xbox One 4k ULTRRRAAAAA

Haha yeah, they'll announce part of the name like "ok people, we present to you the Xbox One 4K....." And then over the speakers very loudly the guy from KI "Ultraaaaaaaaa". :)

I wonder if we will see Code Vein at Ms presser?

Kinda odd to announce the game without any platforms.

399.99 :D

I think Code Vein has a good chance of being announced there yes. Bamco spoke of the game coming to major consoles in 2018, now Xbox and PS4 are too and Switch can be considered that as well in terms of how it's selling but could that game be on Switch in terms of hardware?

MS is well aware of people hoping for Japanese games, so why not start with Anime Souls. :)

I think they wanna make it sound like a big leap over the One and Ten does that. Adding 4K at the end of their current box's name just comess off as lazy and complacent to me. If MS is smart they're going to market this as much more of a leap than just being able to play in 4K like PS4Pro.

I understand your argument.

My problem is just that I think they wanna keep the "One" because they repeatidly said Scorpio is in the Xbox One family.

Also basically all peripherals have the "Works on Xbox One" on them. If they drop the name consumers would be confused and Microsoft does not want this.

So I think it will be Xbox One [Something]

And since "S" is taken, "Pro" is also taken "4K" just makes sense. Also to bring it in line with the Playstation 4 and also show that it´s a true 4K console.

299$, with exchange of OG Xbox One IMO.

Microsoft will never do something like that. Gamestop will.

This might be nothing but maybe it is something: What if there is no Forza 7 at E3? What if it has all been a ruse to distract from the real game coming this year, which is a PGR Forza? Cause this tidbit is in the latest Forza news report:

So there you have it: The Ford GT that will be home in the lobby of Turn 10 (when Alan isn't driving it, of course) will be the amazing Ford GT '66 Heritage Edition. The next step in the story is the delivery of the car, which everyone is eagerly awaiting. We don't yet have the delivery date, but we can't wait to ring in our new office space – yep, that's right, Turn 10 is moving to a new space in just a couple of weeks! -- with this truly special car. Look for the next video in that series soon!

https://www.forzamotorsport.net/en-us/news/wir_6_9_17

Turn 10 is moving. Now I don't know about you, but moving to another office in the middle of crunch mode is not something I would do. I'd do it after I completed a project. Or am still early in it. Now of course a couple of weeks might mean 12+. But wouldn't you say "a couple of months" if it was more than 8 weeks?

That's the main reason why I don't expect it to be so cheap, in case these DF expectations turns out being real.

It was with one particular game in one instance; a console game that was optimized 3x over it's iterations for this hardware and then Scorpio tuned even more to make the most out of these games.

In that one scenario it matched the performance of an Nvidia card (which don't have the best DX12 performance).

If you take that particular test out of that context I don't think it holds up as well.
