Console launch exclusive?

I checked some of the games with that wording and they have PS4 listed as well. It could mean as little as Microsoft releasing games on Mondays instead of Tuesdays.

See, console launch exclusives doesn't make sense to me because if you go to the Xbox store right now you can see a section called "Console Launch Exclusives" that has games like Halo 5 and shit in there which are actual exclusives.

So unless the developer comes out and says that the game is a timed exclusive we basically don't know what the fuck type of exclusive it is.
No, we do.

It's timed.

You have eyes, don't you? The qualifying term is right there on the screen. It is not like they are marketing those games to the blind.
No it's purposefully trying to be deceptive, or at the least pad up that list of 21 exclusives they hyped up

You think it's that hard to actually say "console exclusive", "first on Xbox" like Sony do?

Play it first on...
Console debut...

They just really wanted the word "exclusive" this time around, I guess. It was the main talking point of their show, even more than the new XBOne iteration.

Eh, it was clear to me but the wording made me do a double take. They should have just used Sony's "console debut" or went with something like "On Xbox and PC first."

What about games that only have Xbox listed on the developers own websites? Unless you are saying that MS is having those devs be quiet about PS4 versions as some type of marketing deals?

Genuinely curious

That actually happens most of the time with such deals.

so it seems some of these games are timed exclusives and some, if PR materials are to be believed, are actual exclusives? Microsoft really (probably deliberately) screwed up with their messaging here. Reminds me of the (ongoing?) confusion on Crash Bandicoot's exclusivity with Sony, except with about 20 games instead of just one.

Sure. And developers and publishers have an interest in encouraging people to buy the versions that are available first. They don't really want you to wait.

Obviously you are supposed to add a mental "not" every time Microsoft's announcer says "exclusive". Come on, don't blame Microsoft for your own naiveté.

No, anything with "console launch exclusive" is a timed exclusive. What the PR materials say doesn't matter, it's probably in their contract that they can't say it's coming to PS4 at some point. The same thing happened with tomb raider and everyone was confused as to whether it was really exclusive so square had to specifically come out and clarify that it was a timed exclusive.

Exclusive = exclusive
Console exclusive = MS console + PC/MAC/Ouya etc
Launch exclusive = MS console first/timed exclusivity (usually 12 months), then the rest platforms will get it
*sometimes 2 and 3 mix

Well, most games shown were console exclusive, timed console exclusives or multis with exclusive reveals. It was properly announced in the banner, but the announcer only said "exclusive" in all games.

If you only listen the audio:

But games like Tacoma were listed as console launch exclusive, and I thought that was confirmed as not being on PS4? I might be wrong though

Utterly pointless to do this just say launching first on Xbox.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Sonys version of this will be tomorrow.

Although a game being timed for 9 or 12 months is basically an exclusive imo. By the time it appears on other consoles it's value and 'newness' has gone for me as other games are out.

The funny thing is that, if you have a halfway-decent gaming PC, not a single game they talked about was really "exclusive". They're still pushing the whole cross-buy thing on PC and Xbox, so even with the One X, I still have no reason to buy one.

I'm pretty sure MS did this at last year's e3. I wasn't confused and knew exactly what it meant. I can see why some folks would be confused tho.

Xbox’s marketing team is brilliant and deceptive - it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Last year it was that stupid “only... and 4k bluray playback”
And now its “console launch exclusive”.
They can’t even say exclusive anymore since everything is on PC so its “console exclusive”

Just to be informed - does Sony use similarly vague phrasing?

Console debut
Console exclusive
First on PS4
Only on PS4

These are the ones that won't show up on competitor's platforms:
Forza 7
State Of Decay 2
Sea Of thieves
Crackdown 3
Ori 2
Crimson Skies (BC game)
Cuphead

Only Three of these had not been officially announced before, and one of them is a BC game from the OG Xbox era.

Crimson Skies came out 15 years ago, come on now...

I like the way the narrator only reads out "EXCLUSIVE" but doesn't read out the whole line lol

Unreleased actual exclusives on stage--
Forza 7
State Of Decay 2
Sea Of thieves
Crackdown 3
Ori 2
Cuphead
Crimson Skies (BC)
When you can play all of these except just Crimson Skies on PC that's quite something...

can microsoft no longer afford exclusives? I know that's a weird thing to say because they can but why don't they? This is confusing. I want games available on as much platforms but this is kind of pitiful how I feel they are just handing the victory to Sony.

Just to add even actual console exclusive can still come to other systems after a while. Can't think some examples atm but iirc they have been some.

Mass Effect was a bit of a surprise when it came to PS, but I can't really think of much else.

Microsofts new take on bullshit words

I don't really get this. The words are descriptive and mean exactly what they say. It's a presser, so of course they want to keep the message short and to the point -- 3 or 4 words to use when they have a short term exclusive deal. How are these words 'bullshit'? Sames as 'first on playstation', short, accurate, to the point. Do people really expect them to completely explain every contract during a presser 'well, this comes out on Xbox first, but don't worry, it'll be out on PS4 in 6 months!'...

Microsoft as a company? Of course. The Xbox division? Nope.

It just seems like scummy marketing speak language to me. It doesn't seem like any exclusive content. Maybe just digital launch a few days earlier on X1? I've been in a few twitch streams where the streamer was talking about E3 and I've seen people get it wrong over and over again. I don't like how unclear it is.

Um because many people watching didnt understand what they meant and thought it was confusing. I even saw people in the industry that were confused and thought that all of those indie games were actually exclusive. And the announcer only said the word "exclusive," adding to the confusion. It's intentionally deceiving.

MS so desperate to hammer on having "exclusives" since they cancelled the only truly good one (Scalebound) and downgraded the fuck out of the remaining one (Crackdown 3).

Forza is a great racing franchise, but the sim market is flooded (Dirt Rally, Forza (mainline), Project Cars, GT Sport). It's not like you can't play a great sim racer if you don't have an Xbox. Horizon is at least best in class for open-world arcade/semi-sim.
