2017 Microsoft E3 Conference [Over]

What shirt should Phil Spencer wear today?

I feel like MS has given up on Xbox one and are just buying time by going for 3rd party power. You would think PS3 would have taught them something but some people never learn. Also Phil very excited about all the Japanese games coming from that trip you took. Bravo!
They probably scratched their head and told him, "what's an Xbox?"

I've said it in the a Halo thread but god damnit Halo 3 Anniversary is sorely missed this year. I'm salty. I know it wasn't going to happen but after the show I just felt like there's no big hitter this Holiday that's taking it's place. Looks like my Xbox might start to collect some dust.

The console price did not upset me. I mean it is premium hardware in the end. Jesus those games though, Anthem was the only game worth mentioning. I feel as if we have been seeing the same footage over the past 3 E3's, as if there is absolutely nothing new to offer. It's clear that they still are not willing to take any risks in terms of software. It's a shame, but thankfully, I came in this E3 expecting just this. It's been happening for the past 3 years, and frankly, I think this will continue for a while it seems to be the management's philosiphy. Ah well, I guess we will have to wait for new a team for real change.

I honestly can't fathom how anyone can be excited for next year's presser.

And another thing: if you say "we are investing more in first party" you should probably go about announcing some new major first party games. Just a thought.

I hope this doesn't constitute backseat modding, but I think a lot of people owe Matt an apology still. All he tried to do was temper expectations and people attacked him for it.

It is frustrating, I just vote with my wallet though, which I believe is the best way to show approval or disapproval. Today really put me off Phil Spencer.

I feel the exact same way.

I played primarily on Xbox from the OG to the One for a couple of years before I finally had enough.

Only hope we got is for the negative feedback to have some impact.

This conference was so mediocre and disappointing.

NO megatons, no new big ips....the same thing over and over again. Sea of thieves been in like the last 2 E3s, Crackdown barely had any gameplay, Forza is nothing new, State of the decay looks ok, Ori is fine, but it's not a system seller. Everything else is timed or multiplatform. WHERE'S THE NEW IPS PHIL?

Lots of the games shown at the conference looked dope as hell! Can't wait to pick up lots of them (on PC). Didn't really convince me to get an XBO X, but I guess keeping me in their ecosystem on PC is the sameish thing (for the ones that aren't on Steam).

Really stood out how few true exclusives they have in the pipeline, though. No real surprises here. When so much of your runtime is dedicated to indie teaser trailers (as in, trailers without actual gameplay like Last Night, Artful Escape, and the space silhouette one), you're pretty much fucked.

The games looked excellent, but they're not what I bought an Xbox for, and they're certainly not what I'd buy a premium version of that same console for. I have a PC for that, and luckily, Xbox doesn't have any exclusives anymore. I guess it's just a Netflix/PleXBOX for me.

Crazy thing is at least one thing those machines with more "horsepower" can't do is play Exclusive Sony titles but can play almost the whole XB1 catalog, so MS literally is boned on that front too

That is an incredibly astute point.

Oh yeah, I also found it really shitty how they kept a narrator saying "EXCLUSIVE" for every game they showed us. There was the "console launch exclusive" text in the screen, but they always had a voice over before the trailers saying the word "exclusive". Really shitty.

Agreed.

Honestly, all Sony has to do tomorrow is lower the price of the PS4 Pro by $50 and they've won E3.

A colossal disappointment. Xbox needed much more.

-I have thousand of hours invested into Forza, and it is among my favorite series of all time, but IMHO the FM7 reveal wasn´t well managed. This year it will go against both GTS and PC2, which now I believe are more promising.

-Crackdown 3 (where´s the much promised destruction?) and Sea of Thieves (what else can be done beyond swimming, fighting and searching for loot?) aren´t looking good.

-No mention of AR / Hololens or VR.

-"42 games" shown, of which at least a dozen were minor indies which will be forgotten soon.

-No new, massive, unexpected exclusive announcement. The handful of exclusives shown share a cartoony look which I generally dislike.

-The Xbox One X should have been priced lower ($399). For a moment I thought that the Keighley leak was part of a shill / PR plan; it wasn´t. Scorpio won´t be able to compete against PS4 Pro, which by November will probably be $150 cheaper.

For the first time since this generation started, I honestly believe that Sony´s offering has a legitimate advantage -primarily based on its exclusives, most of which don´t even interest me-. Even if I still vastly prefer Microsoft´s ecosystem and services, this presentation led me to abandon my plans of getting a Scorpio / Xbox One X and now I will seriously consider getting a basic PS4 for playing those few Sony exclusives that I do envy (Saint Seiya games, Gran Turismo).

Eh, as a non-Xbox gamer I think some of you are way too harsh on this conference. I think you guys build it up to something it was never going to be, but to be fair MS themselves did nothing to curb that and might have actual fed the fire. Presentation wise it was okay. They had more games and less talk. They got one nostalgic announcement. The price point is sore point but if you were living in reality you saw it coming. This was never going to chance the tide of the generation, but Xbox gamers can take solace that they will get plenty of games and types of games that they like to play.

A very good 8/10 effort.

lol, I was thinking of GT as I was watching Forza stuff and I was thinking that tomorrow Sony is going to be like "fuck true 4K, checkout this lighting engine."

What makes really hopeless is how excited Phil Spencer & co have been acting. Both before the show and on stage. They really believe this conference was great.

so is there a list of all the games they announced and which ones are actual Exclusives, and which are "Console Launch Exclusives"?

Here's the list I compiled. It doesn't include the games that were multiplatform.

Console Launch Exclusives
Player Unknowns Battlegrounds
Deep Rock
Darwin
Black Desert
Last Night
The Artful something
Tacoma
Ashen

Console Exclusives
Sea of Thieves
Super Lucky's Tale
Cuphead
Ori 2
Crackdown 3
Forza
State of Decay 2

That's 15. They said 22, so I'm missing 7. They must've been buried in the indie montage.

Dunno... While I agree that there was a lack of "wow" for me with most of the games, and the Sea of Thieves was tedious (I've never understood the allure of this game) I kinda feel like most people are missing the highlite of the show... The hardware. Obviously MS was promoting that the best experience for games, especially 3rd party, is going to occur on the XBX. Everything was true 4k.. 4k.. 4k.. outside of exclusives, this has been the biggest beef that people have had with the XB1.. 3rd party preference on the PS4 because of a hardware advantage. I'm at a point where my PC is going to get expensive to upgrade, so the XBX becomes a consideration instead of investing in a new PC. Also, I don't put too much hype in E3 announcements anyways. There are a lot of can't miss games (No Man's Sky and Last Guardian for example) that get hyped for years and end up being underwhelming.

It was alright games wise imo. Some interesting stuff, but nothing I'll be running out to buy an Xbox X for though as I was mostly interested in the 3rd party offerings which I'll pick up elsewhere.

My favourite bit was the Porsche reveal thou...

"World exclusive first look at a new vehicle"

Ohhh

"No one outside of Porsche has laid eyes on this beast"

Mmmm pulse rising!!

"Ta da!"

It's a fucking 911, same as every other 911 in the past 10+ years zzzzz lol

Also, was it me or did Phil almost look embarrassed when he mentioned the $499 price? He seemed to quickly hurry through that bit almost saying it under his breath.

Overall I'd say it was 7/10 for me.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. His way of damage control up there.

I thought the conference went over okay. The constant barriage of "launch exclusive" bumpers only highlighted the current drought that the Xbox ecosystem is in with software. Clearly they're aware of it, too.

Interestingly, it seems the Xbox brand is investing in its past with BC instead of in the future with first-party content.

This conference also made me realize I don't need to purchase Xbox hardware from here on out due to the crossbuy feature all first-party games have.

I feel the exact same way.

I played primarily on Xbox from the OG to the One for a couple of years before I finally had enough.

I still have my one, 100000+ gamerscore etc etc but I have found myself being more and more dissatisfied with each passing year , even small things like their constant barrage of news about back compat and controllers for a year got tedious and frankly odd for a first party publisher. Xbox was usually my main platform since OG, recently I have spent more time and money on the other platforms i own.

Funny everyone is all "LOL console exclusive launch", but lord knows if it was full exclusive it be Microsoft money hat all day. Remember how salty people were about Microsoft getting Tomb Raider for a year. I wish they had more first party stuff though.

I was asleep - woke up and watched everything shown

slick presentation but the XO-X is sort of DOA because of the price and how late it is. The lack of true exclusives is the really killer. Ultra HD bluray in an age of streaming services being good enough etc.

And the games exclusive to it seem to be coming to W10 anyhow. This is a funny one. They have a up hill battle trying to sell this. Sony can just price drop or bundle the pro with games.

Thoughts:

The name is decent - better than Scorpio. Still though

Bv2M27i.gif

and hardly any games properly showed off the advantage that the X will supposedly bring. The price is also much too high.

I guess I don't really understand who the X is meant to appeal to: the hardcore "must have the best graphics/performance at all times for all games" crowd surely already own gaming PCs, which can never be topped in terms of power and performance. That, coupled with the fact that every (?) true Xbox exclusive is also available on PC, and it sort of leaves me wondering why anyone would ever buy an X.

Good/cool looking games:

Metro Exodus

Assassin's Creed Origins (love the setting. Still, it looks like an Assassin's Creed game, which are starting to feel a bit tired at this point).

The Last Night (stunning, but made by a GamerGater :/)

Tacoma (wtf is this)

Super Lucky's Tale (nice to see another colorful 3D platformer out there. Looks cute, if not a little bland)

Cuphead (obviously. This game knocks my socks off every time I see it. It's honestly a system seller level game imo)

ID@XBOX game montage (some of the games looked pretty neat but there were only brief snippets so I didn't catch any of their names)

Ashen

Ori (so cute ;__;)

Anthem looks cool, but also sort of boring?

Bad/janky/meh looking games:

State of Decay

The Darwin Project

Crackdown (man what happened? I'm sure it will be fun, but damn)

Everything else that I couldn't be bothered to list.

~

Overall I'd give the conference a C. It had some cool games, but the main draw (the X) was underwhelming and not totally justified, the "exclusives!" in front of every trailer turned out to be a whole lot of nothing, and too much time was spent on unexciting games (Forza, Shadow of Mordor, Sea of Thieves).

What makes really hopeless is how excited Phil Spencer & co have been acting. Both before the show and on stage. They really believe this conference was great.

It's their job to act like everything is great. Even if the conference would have been a complete shitshow (it wasn't. Not great either tho. Quite underwhelming even from a first party perspective.)

To get people excited for your product you have to come across as excited as well. Doesn't work otherwise. I don't think they actually believe it was great. They know what their lineup is behind all these buzzwords, 4k talk and creative use of the word exclusive. They just had to make the best out of it.

Agreed.

I was telling my buddy that Sony almost just has to show up tomorrow to have a better conference. They would have to strategize and put in effort to have something worse IMO. As you can tell I was a bit underwhelmed by the whole thing :P

After a somber hour and a half, my thoughts.

What a fucking letdown. I thought this E3, Microsoft would knock it out of the park and showcase how Scorpio is going to get them back in front (atleast in NA) but no, we start off with a introductory video and then spend the next 10 minutes on the specs which are already known for months, all backed by forced (fake) woos. Then followed by some games and a sprinkling of price mention and then back to game demo. I mean, this conference was the definition of a muddled mess.

They should've brought home the point that Scorpio would fucking own by bringing developers after developers to sing praises and prove the point on stage. They needed to convince people to upgrade and they failed miserably.

They should've shown exclusives (not "world premiere" exclusive or "launch" exclusive) one after another. What little actual exclusives they showed - Crackdown, Forza, Sea of Thieves etc. looked very pedestrian.

They should've announced a really drastic change in strategy - something like major title release every month going forward - reinvesting in 1st party, game sharing, something drastic that would shake things up and would mean months for Sony to catch up or emulate that. Instead we get OG BC, which tbh a very tiny subset of people give a crap about. Hurray?

The best parts of the conference were actual 3rd party games that would land on other ecosystems as well - Anthem, AC, Mordor etc. So there's absolutely no reason to invest in the Xbox ecosystem for a new gamer based on this conference.

Microsoft needed to convince gamers, so much that they would consider switching platforms. If not switch, then at least go multi-platform. Instead, based on this showing, they will have a hard time convincing gamers to not abandon their platform.

Tacoma (wtf is this)
Second game from the team that made Gone Home.

They should've announced a really drastic change in strategy - something like major title release every month going forward - reinvesting in 1st party, game sharing, something drastic that would shake things up and would mean months for Sony to catch up or emulate that.
They needed to do what EA has done the last couple years. They 'announced' that they are working with the creator of Brothers and this year showed off A Way Out this year. They needed to announce a 'today we are happy to announce a multi-game partnership with <insert name> to help build new worlds and share our vision of gaming. we can't show you anything now, but we want to continue bringing you hits like forza and halo, and add to our portfolio with exciting new titles only available on Xbox'.

It's hilarious to see people saying that was an 8/10 conference. I'd hate to see what a company would need to put up to get a 5/10. Three Army Men game remasters and YouTube Influencer Chris-Chan?

One of the most boring, bloated and uninspired conferences that I have seen during the last 15 years or so...Wow! What the hell, Microsoft...What the hell!

Let's be honest, people gave high praise for GoFundMe announcements last year at E3.
