Console launch exclusive?

How come MS always comes up with new ways to fuck shit up? First they started the whole "timed DLC" now we're gonna have the "timed Launch exclusive" wars...Ugh...Glad I have a PC.

This PR-speak is confusing people for a dumb reason. I looked at the comments on kinda funny and greg said this

Hey--

Greg here. Steve Gaynor on Twitter is telling me that "Xbox One Console Launch Exclusive" DOES mean that it's exclusive to the Xbox One. I have no idea why some games were called "Xbox One Console Exclusive" then. Anyway, I know we debate that at one point, so I wanted to call out that at least one dev is saying that means exclusive. No idea if that means games like The Last Night are truly exclusive to Xbox.

I dunno. Dumb way to describe things if you ask me.

Love you.
Greg"

Now this is 100% wrong. As people in this thread have said, console launch exclusives means it just launches on xbox first, and will come to other consoles later. Console exclusive simply means it will not be on any other CONSOLE. But may be on steam (state of decay, crackdown, etc). I'm pretty sure tacoma, along with player battleground will come to ps4 later.

On an interesting note, MS actually has a section of their store labelled "Console Launch Exclusives".. and all of the games are exclusive to MS. Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Forza Horizon, and Gears 4 are a few of the games listed.

Mass Effect was a bit of a surprise when it came to PS, but I can't really think of much else.

I don't really get this. The words are descriptive and mean exactly what they say. It's a presser, so of course they want to keep the message short and to the point -- 3 or 4 words to use when they have a short term exclusive deal. How are these words 'bullshit'? Sames as 'first on playstation', short, accurate, to the point. Do people really expect them to completely explain every contract during a presser 'well, this comes out on Xbox first, but don't worry, it'll be out on PS4 in 6 months!'...
MS just went for any description that contained the word "exclusive", instead of a more accurate description like "first on Xbox".

Why would he think Gaynor was the authority on this subject?

Are all the games listed as console launch exclusive releasing on the launch of the xbonx?

If they were i could see why they use the terminology. Its a full exclusive and releasing on the consoles launch. The Others, like state of decay are exclusive but might be coming earlier or later than the launch of the new machine.

To me it just sounds like they're timed. "Launch exclusive" makes them sound pretty short lived though. Maybe until 2018? So a couple months or so?

Launch makes it sound like other platforms will get it within weeks, while timed was more like "we've signed deals to keep games exclusive for a set amount of time".

Or maybe they will be launched by or at XOX's launch? Hence, when the XOX launch, these titles will be exclusive at that very moment?

I dunno..

I honestly think that mean the game is exclusive when it launches rather than having anything to do with BONEX.

Exactly, it makes no sense. Maybe in person he has to call it "full exclusive". This PR speak is dumb, and judging from youtube comments many people are falling for it and claiming microsoft has tons of exclusives. I guess microsoft's strategy worked lol. Even close friends of mine on facebook are mad a lot of games seem to be "exclusive" (metro, etc) when they really aren't at all.

I think Xbox launch exclusive means that these games are launching with the one X. Either that or they're timed exclusive on the PC side. It's absolutely ridiculous that Microsoft hasn't clarified this yet with a statement or tweet or something.

Wasn't Tacoma confirmed to be coming to ps4 a couple years ago too? So dumb with all the verbal gymnastics. You'd think they would have learned with rotr.

Funny how the voice EXCLUSIVE was narrated before each announcement... Even though most games weren't even true exclusives

That's what I hated the most ever single time, so disingenuous but I guess if you say it enough times people will believe that exclusive means only on Xbox for some time.

Remember the hell that was Tomb Raider last time? well now we had a full conference of that.

This is the Steve tweet Greg saw, I think. "Not launching on other consoles" just seems like a rephrasing of "console launch exclusive" to me.

That makes no sense
The dbz game is also "console launch exclusive" but ps4s having a beta test alongside xbox

That's not true. The DBZ game said World Premier. Also, it's pretty clear that launch exclusive is new PR bullshit for timed exclusive. The fact that these PR people are tripping up and being really vague means they are not suppose to clarify.

Yes Greg just misinterpreted this tweet it seems like. Steve is saying that the game will not "launch" on other consoles, but the launch will include steam and non drm pc. If the game comes out at a later date on another console, the dev doesn't consider that a "launch."

They really sound the same to me. 🤷

I heard panelists on Kinda Funny super confused about "Launch exclusive" thinking it meant that it's an exclusive timed with the Xbox One X launch.

Meanwhile, "First on PlayStation" is completely obvious that it is coming to other platforms later.

It's honestly sad that Microsoft had to come up with "Xbox Console Launch Exclusive" to fool the large portion of people out there that will instantly believe that this game is only launching on their console.

Eh, both Microsoft and Sony have been doing it for a few years. It's not that big a deal.

(And, like, Microsoft is in a difficult position? There's literally nothing they showed at their press conference that you have to buy an Xbox One to play [besides maybe BC?]. They're going to be ~creative~ with language.)

Yeah, I agree with this. I do prefer Sony's "first on Playstation" line because I think it is much cleaer but it's true that console makers have been perfecting the phrasing for this shit for years.

I assume this is like in geometry where a square is a square, but it also satisfies the conditions of a rectangle.

The hierarchy is "Xbox One and Windows 10 Exclusive," "Console Launch Exclusive," then Multiplatform. So if you want to look at a list of console launch exclusives, it's also going to give you the games in the higher categories as well. Kind of a backwards way of doing things.

The main problem here, and with Sony in the past, is being consistent. Cuphead was listed as an Xbox One and Windows 10 Exclusive, but it's also releasing on Steam so based on the assumptions about the convoluted name, it should be listed in a completely other category simply as a "Console Exclusive." People are amazed it is releasing on Steam, but that was originally the plan long before Microsoft even took interest.

And if Tacoma, which has always been mentioned as a "Console Exclusive" before today, is just a "Console Launch Exclusive," then Microsoft basically just announced the PS4 version during their own show.

At this point the marketing speak is so confusing we should just switch to a vaguely different word and color system like the terrorist threat level.

as always just assume there is an asterisk with every announcement that isn't a first party studio. sure it's shady shit but it's a tactic that does trip people up and sway people, even us here at a hardcore gaming forum. I can only imagine the casual masses thinking everything in that conference was xbox only.

What about games that only have Xbox listed on the developers own websites? Unless you are saying that MS is having those devs be quiet about PS4 versions as some type of marketing deals?

Genuinely curious

yup pretty much.

This isn't anything new.

Why are people even debating this "time exclusive" thing.

They were saying "exclusive" all conference long and yet I'll be able to play every single game shown at the conference without needing an Xbox. They should just come up with something that makes more sense than all this jargon.

The only thing that matters in the console space; probably is the thing about other consoles (ps4/switch) - but mostly PS4. That said the fact that anyone with a good PC and PS4 can play all their faux "exclusive" games is a problem they don't have a solution for.

I actually think it makes more sense than, timed exclusive or first on Xbox or whatever they've used in the past. I just hate that there's a lack of consistency. The industry just needs to pick one term and have everyone stick to it. It can't be that hard.

This is the problem. I have a ps4 and a modest but capable pc. Plenty of disposable income and room for a new console, but there is literally nothing I need to buy the box for. Nothing. I thought I would see something to entice me but it's really quite disappointing
