Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

You're moving goalposts now. I said nothing about him taking away delight from Phil announcing anything, just that as a professional in the industry for years and a decently close relationship with MS, for Geoff to leak that a mere hour or two from the conference after hearing Phil rehearse it undercuts him in presenting it and was dickish tarnishing his relationship with MS for what amounts to nothing for him long term.

Why you and others are trying so hard to dance around that is beyond me. I'm not saying Geoff is an asshole or needs to lose his job or anything ridiculous like that, just that what he did wasn't cool as a supposed professional who by all accounts should've known better.
He did his job. Now ask yourself why you care about this so much.

Geoff is a big boy. I'm sure he knows his relationship with Microsoft even after this better than any of us.

I bought into that theory of him working with them to leak it to soften the blow but after seeing Major Nelson and Greenberg on his YouTube show they didn't seem too pleased with him despite them trying to remain professional in representing the system.

He did them a favor. What did they expect? Did they think the price was a "drop the mic" moment? Bizarre.

If Geoff is lying then he should be banned from GAF , in my eyes for certain if this is controlled leak or something his respect and credibility will be below zero.

fuck that shit

I've lost all respect for Geoff. Also, I would t be surprised if this ended up in legal action.

Some very poor choices being made.

Nah, it's him trying to save face or whatever little trust he has left if anything lol

You all are cracking me up btw acting as if true on the price point that it wasn't an unprofessional move by him having overheard it during rehearsals.

The price is fine with me as I expected that or more but stop trying to excuse that.

When you lads are ready to be adults and apologize, we'll be waiting.

Hence the dickish behavior.

He got information he wasn't supposed to have, and he took the decision himself on what to do with it. It's pretty simple, really, if you understand what respect means.
He doesn't owe MS anything, and he has no reason to "respect" them.

He didn't violate anyone's confidence. Reporting news is his business.

Why are you so concerned with Geoff's relationship with microsoft? Who gives a shit, and most likely his relationship with them is FINE, no matter what the price was going to be revealed. Everyone caring about their relationship and talking about how its damaged is odd.

Why are you concerned about me being concerned at all? Do you see how useless a question like that is?

I'm not concerned about this guy. I ultimately do not care as this is doesn't change anything as far as we go as consumers.

I'm simply talking on how what he did was unprofessional and dickish. That simple. Cool? Cool.

Respect in corporate culture is a big deal. I'm an expert.

Ridiculous analogy for numerous reasons.

This guy was working with MS in several venues even having them grace his platform with personnel including Spencer, and he overheard the rehearsals goes to Twitter in a rush to spill the beans undercutting them and you all don't see that as dickish or unprofessional? Who raised you people?

He likely damaged his relationship with them permanently as they no doubt do not trust him anymore.

It's not about "holding their water" as one poster wrote it's about mutual respect. He showed them none doing that.

And yes, I have a MC avatar other poster who thought to belittle me for using a favorite character of mine in his image. That doesn't change what I'm saying from being correct in any way though so kick rocks until you can actually discuss things like an adult.

I honestly think you care more about this than Microsoft does.

Geoff will be fine. If you're that concerned for him, you can always tweet or PM him.

Damn. I was out all day and only caught the initial rumor.

I feel like I need to read what happened here today but it sounds shitty.

I thought 499 sounded plausible and Geoff was on point.

He did his job. Now ask yourself why you care about this so much.

His job wasn't to leak system prices. Don't be ridiculous. I don't "care about this so much", I'm stating my thoughts on him doing what he did as dickish. No more no less. If you all stopped quoting me and asking me questions I wouldn't respond back. Now ask yourself why you feel you need to defend him so much.

If Geoff had been invited to the rehearsals by Microsoft and was a part of the rehearsal that would be different. But the information was given to him secondhand, and he therefore had no obligation to Microsoft to keep it secret.

It really isn't. I bet you Phil Spencer or any other MS exec doesn't give a shit.

Oh no, he leaked the price an hour early.

His job is to report information to consumers. That's what he did.

I don't know about all that. Phil has stated numerous times BTW that the system was a "premium" one meaning not exactly cheap. If you or anyone else thought all of this technology and power should come at a major loss for them you lied to yourselves. There was nothing bizarre about MS pricing the system as they have. It's actually cheaper than it should be.

I don't owe my coworker anything, but I keep to myself when I don't agree with the stuff he does sometimes.

He said he did not want to spoil games because of his respect for devs. If his business is reporting news, then explain why he did not reveal any of the games he apparently knew about? If his job is reporting news, he would of revealed games as well.

He can reveal whatever he wants to reveal. That's his discretion.

Are you saying he doesn't have the right to determine for himself what information he does and doesn't want to report?

He sees a difference between leaking the details of individual devs' work, and the monetary policies of giant corporations. There is no conflict there.

I bought into that theory of him working with them to leak it to soften the blow but after seeing Major Nelson and Greenberg on his YouTube show they didn't seem too pleased with him despite them trying to remain professional in representing the system.

If it really annoyed them, they would have cancelled the appearance. I didn't watch the show to be honest so you might be right about their mood.

oh lord i love e3.

So if I had a decent working relationship with you and spit in your face but you don't give a shit about my spit being in your face was I still not disrespectful to you?

I'm sure Phil and the team are fine now but I'm willing to bet they initially didn't like that shit.

Yikes. If he didn't sign an NDA or CDA, he can report on anything he damn well pleases. I don't even understand why we're having this conversation over the price of a damn consumer electronic. It's not national security we're talking about here.

He... didn't spit in his face

Especially since he was right

Holy shit how come this is hard to understand.

HE. IS. A. REPORTER. He doesn't work for MS. His job is to inform. And today GK did his job. Let the repercussions fall.

i'm thinking this might be a controlled leak to lessen the pain
i think they didn't even have a power point slide for the price reveal, MS knew this price is going to have a backlash, so they lowered the expectations by leaking to geoff 1st
that's my theory anyway :P

Well they still had to represent their new system and everything. Him revealing that wasn't enough to deter that, simply dickish. At some point I'm going to stop writing "dickish" I'm sure lol

Geoff is a journalist. MS is a game company. He doesn't work for them. They are not co-workers.

Some of you have really weird ideas about game journalists being servants of game corporations.
