Giant Bomb @ E3 2017: <>

Glad I didn't book any time off or cancel social plans for this E3. Except for Devolver/Ubi, that was some weak fucking shit. We're right in the middle of this gen's prime and the results are disappointing. Besides Wolfenstein and XCom Mario, there wasn't anything truly hype-worthy.

I mean this year has been pretty damn good already, to be fair.

Just pointing out again that this is one of the best years of games ever. All the good developers are releasing their shit this year, or just did it last year and have barely started new projects. That's the tradeoff when all the big games are coming, there aren't a lot of new ones to announce

Ubisoft has been the only conference that would at all have been damaged just by being a Nintendo Direct-style pre-recorded stream.

Hell, EA and Sony would have been vastly improved.

Yup. Most stuff shown is the next 18 months so I'm happy with a more muted time for bombs when the games shown look goddamn great. I like both approaches, so changing it up one year to the next as things finish is great.

No, everyone else should have had pyro like Sony. Hell, Layden should have had entrance pyro.

Nintendo needs to knock it out of the park today though.

Hardware shortages and refusal to kill 3ds is really gonna force them to have a KILLER showing.

Yeah, late 2017-early 2018 has been some of the best months of gaming I can recall. So many great games, it will easily carry me to 2018 just to get through half of them.

Hardware shortages due to demand means they probably don't. 1 or 2 announcements as long as they're out within the next 12 months and mario Mario look GODDAMN GREAT, maybe that Zelda DLC and that would be fine for them.

But yeah, let's not talk too much 3DS....

I doubt Nintendo has any huge unexpected announcments in a 30min video.

It'll be stuff that's supposed to come out this year and maybe one or two things a bit further out.

Watching their Sony conference ... does Dan know anything that isn't wrestling-related?

I felt the same way. Dan is great on weekly podcasts when theres almost no news and no time pressure.

But during e3, asking unrelated or tangential or very basic questions again and again, even when there's exciting stuff happening...

I mean I think the guy might be super nervous, given his social anxiety. But hopefully Jeff pulls him aside at some point.

I guess maybe I should watch the conference itself once, then watch the giant bomb stream later...?

Considering what they rattled off like 2 Directs ago along with a long time on ARMS and a Splatoon 2 trailer in less time, they could do it. I'm not expecting it, but I don't think the time is a limiting factor.

They just won't talk to developers in a yarn shop or have a Mario photo montage or some shit.

was literally surprised how much jeff liked that mario vs rabbids game.

Everyone seems to dig it at least a little bit. Probably due to fun presentation involving Miyamoto and expectations being rock bottom.

They already have a great first party lineup for the rest of the year, though- Mario, Rabbids, Splatoon, Pokémon, Xenoblade, with Zelda and Mario Kart still selling.

I don't expect many (any?) surprises from them, but they're going to be showing some properly good stuff today.

I didn't like Sonys last E3 conference so me not liking this one is no surprise. It was more of the same. At least it didn't show titles that are years from release or are nostalgia grabs like Shenmue or FF7.

I miss indie titles being showcased. Honestly, I'm just been enjoying Microsofts style much more even if I'm not a fan of paying for exclusives. At least they are giving the spotlight to some games that might not reach a bigger audience but deserve it.

Sony showed a bunch of third person action games. It had no variety at all. They might end up good but they aren't exciting for me. Horizon also wasn't until everybody started praising the story so I'm going to play it (even if I'm still not sold on it mechanically) so that's just my general mindset I guess.

The format of the conference doesn't help since it takes itself too seriously, it doesn't showcase devs, has no passion or ingenuity like Ubisoft or even Bethesda.

They have PSX where they might showcase more stuff and even Gamescom so it's not like I'm worried that there won't be any stuff to play but when it comes to E3 they do nothing for me.

At this point I just hope Tacoma doesn't have a 6 months exclusive window and more like 3.

I thought Xenoblade was pushed to next year.

It was a rumor by GoNintendo that GoNintendo themselves later contradicted with other sources. So who knows. But fans that have been following the dev blog says they're doing a lot of stuff that you'd only do at the end of production, like final touches on the music and voice acting.

Also, apparently Reggie hinted the first hour of the Treehouse after the Spotlight will have more reveals? Think GB will talk over it?

If anything Sony is showing that if you want a Gaming PC without hassle the Xbox X might be a better choice. Shame about the price.

If Microsoft can leverage their Windows 10 and Xbox unification they can do great things and bring more titles to their platform and faster. Their focus on backwards compability is also cool, especially when Sony shows a remake for Shadow Of Colossus and I kinda just want to play that remaster version anyway.

Wtf @ the guys completely missing Hidden Agenda on the stream last night. Jason didnt even have it up on screen until the last few seconds.

I think Mario x Rabbids looks kinda fucking awesome too.

It was one of those titles where the name announcement seemed to indicate it to be nothing more than another drag at a Mario by-product. But the battle system looks interesting even though it's been done before in other franchises. Sort of reminds me of the same feel from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Will probably be a solid title.

Having rewatched the trailer a few times there definitely seems to be enemy variety that I hope translates to mechanical variety. If the campaign is at least 10 hours long and the difficulty is reasonable yeah I think I'm in

Also without the hassle of your choice of marketplace, backwards compatibility with PC games more or less dating back to the beginning of time, free online multiplayer, etc. Even comparing it to a PC to me takes A LOT of really hard squinting..

I can't find the source, but when I first read the rumor about it I swore I saw that it said campaign was 15-20 hours
The gold PS4 is mega lame.
I loved Dan's reaction, and then Jeff's reaction to him loving it

Doubtful as they have to likely run to appointments on the floor. Though anything revealed will still likely be covered on their daily wrap show, just not live.

Well shit, I guess I need to hurry up and finish the first game.

I can't figure out how I feel about this years E3. The stuff that looked good, looked really good. Mario/Rabbids and God of War being my personal highlights. Plus more X-COM 2. And I appreciated not having half of Sony's press conference be for games that are 3-4 years out. But it just feels like there weren't a lot of big AAA titles at this year's show. I'm not sure if that is reality or just because of how incredible the last 12 months of AAA titles have been skewing things.

So here's where I sit. I've seen a lot of people shitting on the Sony Press Conference but when comparing games that I am at least likely to buy the numbers are:

EA: 3
Bethesda: 2.5
Ubisoft: 3
Microsoft: 3-4 (big maybe on Sea of Thieves)
Sony including preshow: 12 (3 of which were announced here)

I get how you could be disappointed if you were expecting a bunch of megaton announcements, but I really just wanted to see some trailers of the large library of games we knew they had coming already. Some of the showings today sold me on games I otherwise was uncertain about like Days Gone and GT Sport. Regardless, I don't get how you could say MS was better. I wanted to be excited about their lineup but really the things I liked there were indies.

And as for overall E3 disappointment, that's about 25 games I'm excited about and we haven't even seen Nintendo yet. I feel like that's not bad! IDK, I've enjoyed this year so far.

I like how Vinny's the only one who notices what might be happening for a moment, but before being able to put things together and possibly look into it, Ben goes "It doesn't matter" and they continue with a chalkboard joke.

I thought the first day started 2 hours after the end of the spotlight, and the next two days started at 10 PST?

It could be 2018, but even if it is it'll probably be February. So it should still be close

Well, chalkboard jokes were more interesting than that Sony conference.

Huh, I don't think the conferences are a disappointment really, but I can't think of that many games that are a slam dunk gonna need to buy it type. Can you list some examples? I have pretty specific tastes though.

Sony announced a lot of stuff that wasn't at there conference.

Most importantly the new Housemarque game Matterfall is coming August 15th.

Knack 2 also got a release date and price...

They said last night that they would hang around a bit after the spotlight and check out treeehouse since the show floor doesnt even open up for another 2 1/2 hours after the spotlight.

Also this slide is hilarious after how sceptical people were before and then the immidiate 180 after it was shown, they haven't even got to the "convince media/gamers" part lmao
