Dragon Ball FighterZ (PC/XB1/PS4, BN/ASW, UE4, early 2018, beta Sum 2017) E3 trailer

So I'm ignorant of DBZ.

What do I watch to remedy this?
If you want, I can write up a incredibly inaccurate summary of the most important events. It might make Vegeta look like the saviour of the galaxy.

Alternatively you could watch the show or read the manga.

OR you could watch Dragon Ball Z Abridged which is incredibly hilarious but not ENTIRELY up to date so you'll still be stuck mid-way through the cell Saga. But it's incredibly fun. This is the one I most recommend though. It's free on youtube.

I thought Gohan crashing in exhaustion after he beat Cell would be a neat win pose since they went with a known Goku thing for his win pose

He also did it after Bojack

You have a couple of options.

1) If you want to know about how the series started, Dragon Ball (the first one) is a great place to start. However, it hasn't been redubbed so you would have to watch it with Funi's '90s English dub or the original Japanese dub with subs.

2) If you're only interested in DBZ because this game seems to be focusing solely on DBZ and Super, I'd highly recommend Dragon Ball Z Kai. There's Blu-Rays for each saga now (I believe) in English dub with the original Japanese score. This is the redub and no filler, more true to the manga version of the anime. A lot less episodes overall than the original run of DBZ.

From there, you have the option of watching the Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F movies (these two are actually the only two canon movies) and the Bardock and Future Trunks Specials. These are all also on blu-ray.

However, they are arguably not that necessary to watch unless you really end up liking the main series (DBZ) and want to have some more of it.

After all of that, you could then start watching DB Super after like Episode 28 -- Japanese subs. This you could access on Crunchyroll.

But mainly, DBZ Kai is what you'll want to watch if anything. Highly recommend it.

Watch or read DBZ? LOL.

Ehh watch DBZ?

Thank you for these extremely informative posts.

This. This is what I want. I already know Vegeta is my favorite character.

My man, you'd be better off just reading the manga. Start from the first volume with Goku as a boy, and enjoy the saga in its entirety!

Can't do that. When I have time to read, I'm reading other stuff. I can put a show on in the background and watch that way, though.

I guess my real question should have been is what is the difference between Kai and the other stuff?

Awesome. Thank you!

The superior audio quality, superior voice acting, and superior Frieza dub voice far outweighs a handful of badly redone scenes.

I wouldn't know about the dub, so i can't comment on that. Since I think BF music and the superman eng goku are trash but I understand a lot folks grew up with this.. kai is the most accurate eng script tho I'll give it that.

Kai touched up the video quality. Completely redubbed everything to make it truer to the source material. As such the voice actors this time around have years of experience and better voice directors so it doesn't sound like amateur hour like Z. It also cuts out all of the non-canon filler episodes. It also got rid of the edgy 90s Faulconer score and added in the superior Japanese score.

Why? They say it in the Japanese version of the show too.

I grew up with the Spanish/Mexico dub, which to my knowledge doest use it. Ive also never heard it in Japanese but I barely ever listen to that one so Ill take your word for it.

Oh, and is it ever used in the manga? Thats the only real way I consume DBZ anyways, its much, much better than the anime, for my tastes.

It only cuts out the filler from Raditz through Cell, once you get to "The Final Chapters" it leaves in almost all of the filler.

I say everybody who hasn't been up to date on DBZ needs to watch the whole series. It's the right thing. Afterwards watch Super.

If you wanna you can watch Dragonball too but make sure you at least finish Z before this game drops.

IIRC it's not in the manga but the narration uses it in the Japanese version a fair amount.

Guys, of course if you watched the original run of Z you're probably going to prefer that over Kai even if Kai makes a lot of QOL improvements. But for someone new, I'd recommend Kai over Z any day simply due to those QOL improvements it makes from not just the redubbing but also cutting a loooooooot of the filler. Not many newcomers to the series I'd imagine would have the patience for all 289 (or is it 281? I mix this up a lot) episodes of Z.

And if you tell a newcomer to watch Z, then you have to dive into what episodes to not watch because there's full filler arcs like the Otherworld Tournament and Black Water Mist/Garlic Jr. arc. Simply recommending Kai is the better route to go for someone who's looking to get into the series.

If they want to see what the filler content is after watching Kai then it's much better to seek that content out after watching Kai. You'll still be cutting out a lot of filler that happens in actual "canon" episodes.

I've seen the Spanish dub as well but the JP does say Zwarriors.. thing is saying "Zeta warriors" is cheesy as fuck.

Edit: Los guerreros Zeta ain't cheesy at all nvm

Gohan collapsing was his winpose in Extreme Butouden, so it might be the same here.

The special attack button also wasn't always a projectile in Extreme Butouden. We've seen Freeza's rock throw (which was his special attack in that game), and we've seen Vegeta's (jump in the air and continuous energy bullet). So it looks like they may be the same.

In that game, SSJ Teen Gohan's was a flying kick, vanilla Gohan's was a rushing rapid punch, 18's was an anti-air grab, Raditz' was a block, and I can't remember the rest off the top of my head. Around half of the characters had a standard fireball but a lot of them didn't.

Other than their move set characters should be more true to the anime. Like Majin Buu having a slow life regen and the hability to copy the supers used on him.

Others like Vegeta should go on rampage if you have 50% less energy than the opponent... Or Teen Gohan go berserk if the other two team members are KOd

I guess at its core I just dont like it. Toriyama added the Z to Dragon Ball to imply that there wasnt anything after Z, meaning that the sooner hes done with this shit the better (lots of circumstantial evidence of him not liking DBZ in a bunch of places) so to me it reads like shitty marketing to use the "Z" as a story term when it makes zero sense within the world.

I just want to say again that Yu Yu Hakusho deserves a game of this caliber.

Yeah, Kai is worse all around. Don't do that shit.

Yu Yu Hakusho does deserve it, but I feel their roster wouldn't be half as good as anime games like DBZ and Naruto. I know it's a shorter manga/story and all, but once you go through the main four, Botan, Genkai, Toguro,Sensui and Koenma most of the characters might end up being nobodies from the Dark Tournament.

If they were true to the anime, Buu would recover his full life bar several seconds after being at empty.
