Really hoping for closer to 30 characters. If there are less than 20 and you have 3v3 fights, you've got 6 of the characters in any given battle. That could be like 1/3 of the entire cast in each battle (assuming both players pick unique characters, though if they picked some of the same characters because there isn't much choice, that's somewhat unappealing as well).
Still psyched though.

"Q: How many characters will be in the game?
A: I can't say right now... but we can't just have so many characters in fighting game. So we will decide on who will be fun to play, as well as the character's popularity in Dragonball."
However, you could read a little into her answer here, as she went out of her way to draw a connection between the current roster size and how complete the game is, and potentially get a rough idea of how large the cast will be...
"Q: What is the game's development status?
A: We only have 6 characters shown, so hard to say... About 20% overall?"
This puts the ceiling at 30 characters. Though I think many of us suspect we won't get that many characters (mid twenties seems far more likely).
I absolutely see where you are coming from, and I would be okay with those numbers usually, but they are going to receive some fairly heavy criticism if they try to make a 3v3 fighting game and the initial roster has less than 20 characters.
Its a DragonBall game, the characters exist they don't have to invent anything, even the moves exist to some extend. It's 3 vs 3 too, KOF 14 pulled a new enginge and had 50 characters, yeah it wasn't as hard as Arcs engine to make but still.
Also don't forget one thing, Arc is worse than capcom when it comes to milking things, they don't add shit on purpose to make their newer version with 3 more characters or so 1 year later, this shouldn't be the case since
a) They are just the developer of a Bamco game
b)If i recall Bamco can make only one DB HD title per year so until 2020 no sequel to this game(considering Xenoverse 3 is next since 2 sold a ton)
So yeah don't expect KOF or Xenoverse 2 numbers but it will be more than 20 for sure, Id say the minimum is 25 with some initial DLC

Sounds interesting, I wouldn't mind something like this although I think having Gotenks as one character would make more sense considering they rarely fight as a duo like that.You should hope that what they actually do is a duo moveset for Kid Goten + Kid Trunks that has a Gotenks buff state. Arc Sys knows how to do puppet character movesets after Blaz Blue for certain and the shit that's possible in those movesets is amazing. Just check out the shit in Melty Blood with Hisui and Kohaku who are a single selectable character. In this gif you see the player switching between which character is attacking over and over again like crazy. Since the two kids are seen more as a duo that leads to Gotenks anyways this would be both stylish and appropriate.
And just think...with the weird donut projectiles and ghosts that Gotenks is known for doing its not like his "buff state" would lose any of the crazy mixup philosophy his base Kid Goten + Kid Trunks moveset would revolve around.
This is my big hope for a special character slot in the game right now. It'd add a helluva diverse style to your optional team setups.
Hell yeah lol, and for victories they unfuse and fall to the ground laughing or something comedic.
In an era where you can't even say that Wolverine is a safe bet for a Marvel vs. Capcom game, things can be pretty crazy. But yeah, there's crazy, & there's bat-shit insane. Doubting Piccolo's inclusion in DBFZ falls under the latter. Relax, guys.
Especially since Piccolo could serve as the dhalsim of the game (just way cooler)

I don't know why but I think Piccolo should have a ranged command grab where he extends his arms to grab you.
Like Kan-Ra in Killer Instinct, or Swamp Thing in IJ2.

Speaking of Piccolo, I cannot wait to see him animated in this game. They can do some really cool things with his moveset, and specifically the Special Beam Cannon is going to look amazing in this art style.

It's freaking Krillin, Goku's best friend.
Krillin, Piccolo, Tien, 18 and Gotenks are the certain characters of this game in addition to the 7 revealed.
So have Puar be Yamchas Dexstar? I dig it.

I am usually a pessimist when it comes to roster size. But I'm suriprised that people are being pretty conservative in general. I kinda get using BB and GG roster size as a reference point but I feel like the 3 v 3 necessitates more characters to choose from. The very nice producer lady especially seems to be pushing the whole "dream team" aspect of this game and it'd be weird if every team had the same 2 guys in it. Also I saw an interview where the producer had a hardy laugh when the interview asked if there'd be more than the 6 characters; granted that's a dumb question but the answer mentioned 3 v 3 as a reason there'd be more characters.
I want shades of Super Skrull in my Piccolo pls.

The absolute minimum for roster size has to be 21 since it's 7 teams of 3.

Saiyan Saga Yamcha is, surprisingly, my favorite look. That being said, I also love his Dragon Ball looks (though desert bandit is my favorite DB appearance). I agree that Android Saga Yamcha is, by far, his worst look. However, I will take any version of Yamcha.
His super design is really good.
Its basically his Saiyan Saga design, but with a different outfit, which I prefer cause was never really a fan of some of the characters all using the Turtle school GI (Goku, Krillin, Gohan, Yamcha)
Krilling should get his own outfit at some point too lol.
Ideally Yamcha in this game would be wearing either his Super baseball uniform, or the Tai-tans uniform.

I don't mind this design either. I love the long hair. I wouldn't mind the baseball uniform, but at that point I want Junpei's baseball mechanics from P4AU to make a return.
