Final Fantasy XII Remaster - Pre-order question

Hi all,

So, I'm just looking for clarification on the below.

It would appear, when preordering FFXII at GAME or the SE, you will be given a code for Background Music DLC. Which is a code to unlock the original soundtrack background music in-game.

Does this mean if I do not preorder at either GAME or the SE store, I will not have the original OST and only the remastered?

I was hoping it would be more like FFX's remaster where both were included for PS4.

Apologies if this has been asked before.

Wait, what? This sounds like absolute bullshit. Preorder DLC for a remaster which should be striving to be the definitive release of a product.

Next thing GAME will get exclusives for Japanese audio.

Have had my copy preordered for ages on Amazon and I'm not switching, no matter how much of a second class consumer SE are going to treat me like.

I preordered from JBHIFI here in Australia and the dlc is included with the steelbook edition.

Although from what I've heard this is a huge step up from FFXHD's poor rearranged soundtrack.

On the German Amazon site it doesn't say anything about the music being a preorder bonus, it's just a perk that comes with the Steelbook edition. So you probably won't need to preorder, just make sure to get the Steelbook. I don't imagine it'll be sold out on day one although I can't guarantee it of course.
Still weird that they seem to do it differently from the FF X remaster.

The original OST only comes with steelbook and collectors editions

Not sure if anywhere else still has the steelbook available but amazon were sold out months ago

Just seems to be in the Special Edition

See, I could preorder the steelbook version to get the Music DLC, but its £10 more on the GAME and SE store.

Just feels a bit shit to be honest, locking the original OST behind a preorder and then locking it behind certain stores, in the UK at least.

Had no idea they were doing this, how shitty. So can anyone confirm what the stock OST is if you don't have this DLC? I've been on media blackout in anticipation for this.

The fully re-recorded OST it seems. Kinda curious how it happened since interviews had suggested you can just pick between the two so for UK/EU I suspect it was a Square Enix Europe promotional idea....

Dont worry, when they release FFXII The Zodiac Age on PS5/PC - it will have it just like what happened with FFX/X-2 HD not having the original OST on PS3/PSV but it did have on the PS4/PC version.

/s....I hope :P

They're doing something similar here in the US.

Original music DLC only for Steelbook version and the Squeenix store exclusive collector's edition.

On the plus side, the Steelbook and the standard edition are both the same price at $49.99. Sucks for digital buyers though.

I asked the same question when the Background Music was announced with DLC the same image.... Are they seriously fucking locking an entire soundtrack behind an additional purchase?

Didn't have a clear answer then, hopefully someone will educate us this time.

The DLC is for the original FFXII CD soundtrack while the full game will include the original (based on PS2 sound chip) and The Zodiac Age arrangements.

From left to righ in the cursor part: Original (PS2 sound chip), new arrangement, soundtrack (CD)

I'm certain you'll be able to buy the background music DLC at some point down the line. I always make sure to secure these silly pre-order DLCs and every single time I see them on sale on the online shop weeks or months later.

...so we got flustered over nothing?

Are we sure it not for the soundtrack as something to listen to, separate from the in-game music which can be original or remastered?

Edit: lol beat.

It'll either be what your saying, which I hope it is, or it'll be that option is locked and we need the code / buy it to listen.

Either way, its a confusing mess that SE didnt need to let happen if they'd just explain things a bit better.

I remember trying to figure this out a couple of months ago and ending there. The wording doesn't make it obvious at all, that you get PS2 Original and Remastered out of the box while this adds the PS2 Soundtrack album as BGM on top of these two.

(To add to the clusterfuck, the EU digital preorder promises 4 new original tracks lol)

Edit: seriously, how hard was it to communicate on PS2 soundtrack, Remastered soundtrack and CD soundtrack?

Sooooo the CD soundtrack might play all the music while you're playing like first track to last no matter where you are in the game, and the original/arranged would be the tracks where they are supposed to be during the game? I don't know why you would ever want to do that. So confusing lol.

My understanding is that the tracks from the CD soundtrack will be fully integrated, they'll just replace the PS2/Remastered tracks.

So it's three versions of the soundtrack? Remastered, CD version of the PS2 soundtrack and the actual PS2 BGM? How confusing, lol.

So what is the difference between the original soundtrack and the CD soundtrack? Better audio quality on the CD one?
Yeah, the PS2 sounded like an approximation of the CD version using lower-quality samples.

It does make sense that you'd want the original 2006 version, but the best version, not the PS2 approximation. Or vice verca.

Hold on, so if I'm understanding correctly the DLC is literally the original heavily compressed (poor quality) PS2 audio track?

Boco explains it better. There were always two versions of the original soundtrack : the low (well not that low) quality PS2 version and better quality OST version.

The remaster includes the original PS2 version that everybody who played knows + the newly rerecorded version.
The DLC is for the high quality OST version of the PS2 soundtrack.

You choose which one you want to jam to in the options and it'll play naturally over the course of the game.

Oh hell naw. I'm going to have to hear some of this newly recorded version before I decide to bite the bullet and get that more expensive steelbook ver. as glorious as the artwork is.

I am not quite sure what you mean by locked out. Locked out as in "you won't be able to select between original PS2 sound chip and new arrangements at all without the DLC code" or "the option to select the original PS2 CD soundtrack is in the config/setting menu but not selectable for those without the DLC"?

If it's the former, then both (original PS2 sound chip and new arrangements) will be available. I am pretty sure that's been part of Square Enix's marketing for this remaster. If it's the latter, then the option to select the original PS2 CD soundtrack in-game is not available at all (I guess it'll only show up after downloading the DLC). At least that was the case when they showed it in the first Japanese live stream from two months ago (the screenshot in my first post is from the second live stream).

But yes, it's pretty confusing what the English wording meant by BGM DLC in some of their initial PR for the remaster. I only realized from watching the second Japanese live stream that the soundtrack DLC they talked about is the PS2 CD soundtrack.

tldr; In all copies of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age you will be able to select between two soundtracks. The original which runs on the PS2 sound chip and brand new arrangements done by Hiroshi Sakimoto.

Early buyers (...depending on retailer and/or whichever edition in the West?) will get a DLC code that will add a third selectable soundtrack which is the PS2 CD soundtrack.

Samples right here.

Isn't the steelbook the same price as the normal copy anyways? At least it is on Amazon. Dunno how it is in other regions.

Edit: Sorry, the standard edition is 3 Cents cheaper.

I just pre ordered the steelbook edition but I was also wondering if the backgroundmusic dlc is also in the standard edition... it does not make sense to not include that in the standard

Yeah, the PS2 audio wasn't streamed but used the PSF2 audio format which is basically audio generated by the PS2's built in synth which isn't unsimilar to a midi sequencer.

You can read up on format and how it works here - https://web.archive.org/web/20140227160902/http://www.neillcorlett.com/psf/

Unfortunately after 2014, Neill Corlett's website was taken down so the existing documentation for PSF itself is limited based on old websites via internet archive.
