Baby Driver (dir. Edgar Wright) |OT| All You Need Is One Killer Track

Scott Pilgrim is probably the only Edgar Wright movie I haven't watched more than 10 times. I might have only watched it once actually. Time for a rewatch.

Can't seem to recall this. When does this happen?

The bad guy at the end's name is Jason and he keeps not dying and showing up over and over again.

I just saw it. It didn't hit me right and I have a pretty negative opinion of the movie. It took me two watches of HotFuzz to really like it so it could be just the day and not the movie. I found the tone to be wildly out of step with the movie and I don't like it when an unreasonable character just ruins everything for the sake of ruining it.

Just watched it.
It's good, but I was expecting better. It didn't quite live up to the hype imo.
Btw, why Jon Bernthal have such a small role? Too busy filming Punisher at the time?

Baby in the next Fast and Furious... when?

Dude's got mad skills and a tight gimmick.

Surprised not to see Jon Bernthal in the final act, I guess like he stated he probably died... LOL!

My main quibbles:

Bats never demonstrates any value to the team. Why is this lunatic asked to participate in multiple heists? He doesn't seem to have any particularly distinctive skills or abilities. He's clearly a loose cannon. It makes no sense for someone as meticulous as Kevin Spacey to hire him.

The ending stretches credulity to the breaking point. There's no way that someone complicit in the murder of a dozen or more police officers is going to walk away on parole after 5 years (or get a meager 25 year sentence).

Is this a controversial opinion? The World's End is his best movie.

The first half of it is definitely his best. The second half is his worst. I wish he had it in him to just finish and tell the story he started because he completely had me bought into those characters as people and Simon Pegg's / Gary's struggle.

Buddy, Jon Hamm's character, real name is revealed as Jason. At that point in the movie he role in the story is basically Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th movies.

DAMN

Caught the spoiler, but didn't put that together. That's awesome.

Also the sound mix at my theater was pretty bad. A lot of the sound effects drowned out the music at times which ruined the whole beat thing they have going.

His character's last words are something like "If you don't see me again, I'm probably dead." So who knows.

Just got back from the theater. Had a absolute blast with it and will definitely be picking up a Blu-ray later. Also loved the use of the license music in the film. Played at the perfect times.

Only complaint was that the last scene
were Baby and Buddy was going at it
got a bit on the long side but it was still well shot so I'm willing to be a little forgiving towards it.

I have to say though, Hamm makes for a menacing villain. I guess he had years of experience to cultivate that brooding anger with Mad Men.

Yeah, this film (like all of Wright's films) will take a rewatch for me to catch all of the foreshadowing and Easter eggs.

Loved the movie! Like others, I was waiting on that apex that never quite scratched the itch, but the movie was so incredibly well put together...I didn't mind one bit. The editing in all of his movies is just on another level. Cinematography was on point, too.

I can tell this is probably gonna end up having a battle royale with Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim to be my favorite Wright film, with Shaun and World's End following closely.

Probably going to be hitting this alone since my friends don't seem interested. I suppose the real question since this is my first movie in 2017 (in theaters); popcorn or milk duds?

I'm surprised at The World's End praise in here. I've always thought it was general consensus that it was his worst.

I didn't like it when I first saw it, but I watched again a few years afterwards after going through some more life changes, and I grew to appreciate what it was a lot more.

WILDCARD

(A bunch of the stuff that the characters did in this movie made no sense)

I mean the worst Edgar Wright movie is still miles ahead of most movies. The movie still rules.

Edgar Wright and the Lord / Miller duo are probably the 2 director (directing team) that I'd say are running a perfect record right now. I've never been let down by any of their projects. I'm incredibly let down by the loss of Lord / Miller on Han Solo.

Yeah, of that trilogy. I like it better than Scott Pilgrim.

Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead are definitely superior.

But I definitely feel like Hot Fuzz is his best and it took a few viewings for me to realize that.

Wow. What a fucking waste of $58! This movie was at least a $49.95 film.

Looking forward to the Baby Cinematic Universe.

Hot Fuzz > World's End > Baby Driver > Scott Pilgrim > Shaun of the Dead

If I had to do power ranking.

Hot Fuzz > World's End > Baby Driver > Scott Pilgrim > Shaun of the Dead

If I had to do power ranking.

Ok . . . but why is Shaun so low?

(I need to see baby again, but mine is probably

Shaun > Scott > World > Baby Driver > Hot Fuzz)

Maybe. Because just as I typed that order, I felt guilty for putting HF so low and Scott so high.

Well, you should. Scott Pilgrim is not a good movie. Scott Pilgrim is an okay movie.

It would have worked a lot better as a tv show.

Hot Fuzz is a perfect movie.

Hmm. Seeing people put World's End above Baby Driver is making me nervous. Still going to see it but tempering my expectations now.

Just got out. Lots of things were poor in this film that just chipped away at my enjoyment so by the end, after a terrible 3rd act, I decided the movie was not good. Probably Edger Wright's worst film.

Interesting idea with poor execution.

I will probably be in the minority after seeing some of GAF's gushing in here, but it's not the first time I didn't care for something GAF loved.

Scott is imo maybe his most uneven film and it's kinda niche in its way. There's moments I would feel uncomfortable seeing it next to family or friends akind to playing some of the more cringey jrpgs. But I respect that a western film maker did something in that style going all in.

I agree with you. It really is such a straightforward plot too which is something Wright normally doesn't do. The core relationship seems phoney and is underwritten. Baby glowers through most of his scenes, is mostly unpleasant to watch, and I have no idea why Jamie Fox exists in this movie other than to be a difficult unreasonably personality. It's almost like Ronin but with music and without the class. The tone seems so bizarre too as it fluctuates between extreme lightness and some nasty ugliness.

Shaun and Hot Fuzz are his two most consistent movies and are both incredibly clever and full of energy. Scott Pilgrim is really well made but never feels satisfying. Worlds End is a 50/50 movie with half being brilliant and half being lame. This is just off throughout. Like I say, maybe I have to see it again as it could have hit me on a bad day.

that was quite good, but i'm not sure how i felt about the ending - could have ended a little earlier
riding off into the sunset

not as good as hot fuzz imo but a damn fine movie

Between the excellent fight choreography and the story, I think it's his best. The way they handled Gary's addiction was heartbreaking and fantastic.

Man, the second half of that movie is just totally forgettable. GIve me Scott Pilgrim over it any day.

I am a fan of Wright and even World's End which felt uneven, had me entertained. I'm still reeling from how much I was disappointed and didn't like this film.

The in-universe justification for the music,
and why he has to record everything
, was pretty hamfisted by the end, even though I thought it was a decent enough explanation at first that they should have just left alone, but it felt like it wanted to be a musical but couldn't commit.

There wasn't anything really inventive done with the action choreography or directing to the music or even a scene where I saw why they wanted to make the movie like this. It's basically average action scenes with gun shots going to the music at certain points. Especially for Wright, this was disappointingly directed and sometimes hard to follow. And some of those chase scenes were boring which is the worst thing you can do in a film about cars.

Don't get me even started about the characters or the plot.....

I have to let it sink in. I wanted to love this film but I'm really trying not to say I hate it before parsing what I liked and what I didn't.

This ruled. Totally lived up to the hype.

Has less to say about the human condition than his previous films, but the best action film he's done by a mile.

When Gary
rolled his sleeves up, the movie just hit home for me (not that I'm suicidal or anything.)
. I just thought it really nailed the whole "you're middle aged, the good times as you remember them are never coming back" in such an excellent way.

Edgar Wright low isn't terrible.

really enjoyed the movie. a lot of stuff doesn't make any sense, but I don't think its supposed to. the intro with the
graffiti lyrics is cool. So is the heart graffiti when Debra first appears

But I don't see how anyone could rank Fuzz lower than World and Scott on an objective level. It's just a much more successful movie at what it tries to do.

Both Scott Pilgrim and World's End suffer from a poor back half. Pilgrim is really admirable in what it manages to translate from the books, but sometimes the literal appraoch is not the best. Worst, the story itself suffers considerably from the feature film runtime. I never believe Scott and Romona's relationship and that's the film's biggest failure.

What? Hot Fuzz is perfect.

Question about the character's names:

Were any names revealed, other than Baby, Darling and Bats's?

Baby was Miles, Darling - Monique, I think, and Bats was Luis.

Any other that I've missed?
