FFXII: The Zodiac Age changes and additions: what's new in this Ivalice remaster?

Link.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age launches worldwide on PlayStation 4 this July, and it's far more than just an upscaled rerelease. Not only does this new HD remaster have improvements on its own accord, but it is also based on the "International Zodiac Job System" (IZJS) edition of the PlayStation 2 game, which never saw an official release outside of Japan.

That means that Western players are going to find more than a few differences from the original PS2 version of FF12 once they play it on PS4. There's a veritable slew of changes, in fact, and we're gathering them on this page and updating as we learn more.

If you need an overview of some the changes you can expect if you're coming to The Zodiac Age as an FF12 veteran, this is the page for you. (We also have a video preview if that's more your thing.) First we'll cover what changed in the original International Zodiac Job System for PS2, and then after that cover what's also new in The Zodiac Age on PS4. So - here's what's new.

Thought some might like to see all the changes.

The change to the way quickenings work was probably the best of them for me, how they thought they were acceptable in the original I don't know

Good to get a refresher on it. Now I just need to decide on which classes I want to pick for everyone.

This is going to paralyze me pretty badly, especially since you can't switch jobs freely like in FFT and FFV. I'll make sure to look up what things like Uhlan, Shikari, etc... are all about beforehand.

Oh man, some of these changes are fantastic! Just did a playthrough of IZJS translation for the first time a little over a year ago before this remaster was announced, and I thought it was such a huge improvement over original FF XII. But one of my main issues with it was the 4x fast forward was almost TOO fast at times, as to be disorientating, or feeling a bit too much like cheating, so I think the 2x option will be perfect sometimes. I also love the 2x jobs per character option, lets me be a bit more adventurous with my job selection. Though knowing myself this means I will spend even more time crafting my 2x parties of 3 each, trying to make it so they can cover all or at least most things with any job combination.

Seems like there might even be enough changes over IZJS to keep me invested for another playthrough.
Who am I kidding? It could have been the same game as the NA release feature wise and I would have still played the heck out of it.

Uhlan - Lancer
Shikari - Thief/Ninja
Foebreaker - Beserker
Bushi - Samurai

Right haha I'm going to spend ages probably without even playing, deciding which two jobs go to who and what esper is given to who

Yeah, it's going to be...difficult. At least we get to use all classes this time, sort of. I think the easiest way will to find a guide of recommended classes from the original, then shove the other six elsewhere as and when. This is why I wanted an option of using the original license grid. Just lemme at the game.

the 4x turbo mode is going to save me a lot of time, I might actually be able to finish it. I personally welcome these time saving features, especially for long jrpgs, I just don't have the time and patience to play through 60 hour games anymore.

Control+F "Zodiac Spear." All is well. Also, thank god for that quadruple speed button. All games should have this.

Dunno how anyone got that on their first playthrough. Youre passing up chests/pots for like 90% of the game then having to clear a optional dungeon just to get it. Stll, XII was my favorite final fantasy in terms of exploration, and would pay 80 bucks if they added a fuck ton of expanded areas and raise the level cap for them. I want to know what's beyond the sandsea.

Uhlan - Lancer
Shikari - Thief/Ninja
Foebreaker - Beserker
Bushi - Samurai

Thanks for the heads up.

Oh, I've had my fun with the original grid. I'm really looking forward to specializing the cast. It means I'm actually going to use everyone rather than just stuffing Penelo and Vaan away, never to be seen again.

Honestly more excited for map overlay than anything else on that list.

And just like that the Great Crystal becomes FAR more manageable. Another thing RPGSite didn't mention is that spells no longer go into a buffer like they did in the original. They instantly cast as soon as they're ready to go.

Thank God for 2x speed toggle instead of only 4x.

4x was too fucking much most times.

That, along with inherent break damage limit should make black magic far better. Can't wait to Scathe some mobs.

This is very handy, thanks.

Apparently some (all?) of the new music tracks are for boss battles, which should give them some needed individuality.

Can I hope for a PC release eventually like it happened with the FF X/X-2 remaster? :(

latest interview with one of the developers essentially shrugged this off as something they weren't really interested in pursuing.

definitely not something i'd hold out on happening in a year or so

Only thing I dislike is the auto-save feature.

What happens with the
fake save crystal
?

Otherwise this remaster will be amazing

Huh, they didn't mention that multiple characters can pick the same job which AFAIK is a new addition to The Zodiac Age?

I didn't know about controlling guest characters. That's neat. I've been waiting to play a version with the fixed job system for a long time. Can't wait to jump into this. Looks really pretty too. I always loved the art style in XII and they did great with the X remaster, so looking for that same quality here.

Edit:
GameFAQs job combination guide/thread

Seems immensely helpful if you're stuck.

Geez this looks comprehensive. Thanks for posting this!

Holy moly, thanks.

On the stream two weeks ago they mentioned 4k on Pro, but not if native. Though I would assume so...

It'll be native 4K. The KH remasters do 4K/60fps with no issue.

Though no downsampling for us 1080p peasants, which I'm anticipating with this release too.

Auto-save was an unexpected boon in X/X-2 PC, especially during challenge runs. For me it's a very welcome addition to Zodiac Age. If nothing else, it should help out a lot when playing through Weak Mode NG+.

Looks like Genji glove / Yagyu Darkblade will be the go-to for Yiazmat... anyone got any tips for superboss-melting builds?

Does Trial Mode provide anything useful for your main game playthough or is it there to be speedran/challenging?
