FFXII: The Zodiac Age changes and additions: what's new in this Ivalice remaster?

Hmm, i though they give much more balance and gameplay polish to Zodiac Age version after International Zodiac Job System, oh well

Would have been great if they included Revenant Wings. Maybe they could have used FFXII's graphics too or something? Never played Revenant Wings so IDK how the game actually is.

It's an RTS for one, so it's a completely different genre from FFXII. It's a simple, but fast paced game. I can't really imagine it working on a gamepad. It really needs the touchpad, or at least a mouse.

I quite enjoyed it. I don't really have the patience for most RTS games, with the 30+ minute long matches and the supply base managing with separate buildings for each kind of unit. RW doesn't really have any of that. Which is why RTS fans tend to dislike it I guess.

Revenant Wings is pretty awful, I hated it. Most people's big selling point seems to be the fact Vaan is wearing a shirt

Vaan does not wear a shirt in Revenant Wings. He wears a shirt in Tactics A2.

How is the game compared to FFXII and what makes it better or worse? I always think it's like FFXII-2.

Story-wise it is very much XII-2.

The gameplay is a very simple RTS and very repetitive.

However, all the stuff around the periphery of the core battle system is very well done. It's easily Toriyama's best story (not a high bar I know, but it's actually nice) and it fills out some of the more personal character moments people wanted in XII.

Remaking Revenant Wings in XII's style would be a whole AAA-production cost wise, so it probably won't ever be done. But it's a shame, there's a lot of good in there.

huh? They had Ito, the co-Director and Battle Designer assist with any balance changes etc and little improvements here and there. If you wanted the game to be balanced to be harder that probably wasn't going to happen :P I think the combinations of each character having two jobs will be kinda mind boggling in terms of game breaking potential? Debating what I'll have even now...

Since this seems to be the main thread before the OT let's start talking about important things, okay?

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age |OT| The reigns of history back in the hands of GAF
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age |OT| ABSolutely Remastered
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age |OT| You get a job, you get a job, you get a job!
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age |OT| This thread replies itself

People defending Vaan's original abs? That's a first.

But even at $50 on PS4 it's for two games.

Half the game should be half the price. $29.99 seems reasonable.

I was fortunate enough to get my preorder in on Amazon when they had it for like $32 for some reason. Then I got a $10 Amazon credit for streaming Prime video to my TV for the first time (which expires just before XII comes out, so perfect timing), so after tax I'm paying like $24 for it. Not bad. :D

Is the Steelbook version supposed to be the same price as regular? My Amazon order (US) shows $53 after tax. It doesn't look like they applied the Prime preorder discount.

Is this the same for everyone else? My Prime hasn't lapsed in the 10+ years I've had it.

I have been trying to investigate this for a while now and I believe this is a really weird misunderstanding/poorly communicated extra feature. The game includes a toggle between the re-recorded new orchestrated arrangement soundtrack (with new tracks) and the old original game soundtrack. This is not DLC in any way.

What seems to be offered as a preorder incentive though, is a DLC that allows you to use the original soundtrack as custom soundtrack in the game. Presumably replacing the BGM with whatever other track you want. In fact, the Japanese site lists the DLC as "Custom BGM Product Code".
Thanks, that was really helpful. Seems like a weird feature to be honest... I kinda prefer the game to choose the music based on the context... doubt this particular feature would benefit me.

Steelbook is very pretty though

Just picked it up. Going to go at it slow, playing ff14 at the same time.

So jealous... this is the only game I want to play right now but I have to wait a week. Did you just get lucky that some store made a mistake, or did you get an early copy from SE?

Weirdly, I find myself thinking less and less of X over time. I don't think they're even close at this point, with XII being my favorite in the series, and X being above only 2 and 3.

I haven't been able to fully replay X from beginning to end in years and every time I pick it up again I kind of dislike it more and more lol.

I could have sworn when I pre-ordered the steelbook it applied the discount, but I just checked and it says $49.99 in the open orders section. There's no reason the discount shouldn't apply. I'd keep my eye on that and maybe contact customer service if they end up charging full price.

people are talking about two jobs ? esper links ?

I played this game 10 years ago, I don't remember any of that but I know this adds a lot, so should I theory craft early or is everything reversible at some point ?

My steelbook order on Amazon is the same prize and my Prime is still current.

Job selections are permanent. You may want to put at least some thought into what jobs would compliment others, and which characters would be best from a min/max perspective.

As for espers, in the Zodiac job system license boards, often times, esper nodes are blocking a path to some really nice licenses, but like the original, an esper can only be used by one character, so once you use it, those licenses on all other boards are locked out.

Gamefaqs board has a lot of discussion on this right now.

Maybe I just don't remember the game all that much from when I played it back on the PS2, but right now I'm finding that I'm basically doing nothing as Vaan as a Bushi. I literally have him set to auto attack the closest enemy and that's it. There don't seem to be any specific Bushi skills that I'm unlocking, and so far no magic and no techniques. I guess I was expecting the jobs to have some sort of unique skills from one another but it seems like it's mostly for using different weapons, at least right now?

Early game doesn't have much variety, this is true. There aren't really any specific weapon skills, each class gets access to different armor, techniks, magic, and weapons. Each weapon does have different properties as far as damage calculation and combo % (the chance to do multiple swings per attack command).

(You should also be setting Vaan to steal from enemies)

It took 6 whole minutes to transfer these to a usb, is there a faster way of uploading ps4 screenies?

Was your Pro set to 1080p in display settings when you took these?

Folk in the Pro enhanced games thread say your console needs to be set to output 1080p so we can check.

Gotcha, yeah I have a gambit for Foe = 100%HP to Steal.

I so wish they'd add a real new game plus where you keep all of your earned equipment/spells but get story, sidequest, level, and license progression reset.

Bushi isn't all that specialized early on, although they do get some nice HP+ early as well as a swiftness.

yeah Vaan has a ridiculous amount of HP right now, overshadowing almost everyone. I guess since I really haven't played it since the PS2 era, and then learning about this improved Job system, I took that to mean that each job would have unique skills attached to it, going by the Tactics games and the like or the Dresspheres from X-2 or Paradigm Shifts from XIII. I don't think that detracts from my enjoyment from the game, I am really loving it, but I was just slightly taken aback how different from my expectations that ended up being.

Early on probably feels like it's mostly just about weapon and armor types, or magic types.

It is mostly about that later, too, but also about how many Augments you get. e.g. Battle Lore up to 9 or up to 15.

The big differentiation now comes from the secondary Job, and sort of mix-matching those things... Do you want your Machinist or Shikari to get access to Mystic Armor, for example, so you can wear robes that match the element of your weapon. Or, do you want to make sure you get up to at least Battle Lore 12 or 13 instead of just Battle Lore 6. Do you want your Red Mage, who gets Ardor, to get access to a Flame Staff, or do you want to use Red Mage to give your Foebreaker access to Lordly Robes.

Sort of turned the game into an [optional*] min-maxing theorycrafter. *I say optional because it's mostly not required, and is mostly to either perfect your endgame or for the Trials and especially the NewGame+ Weak Mode.
