Ok so I just finished chapter 1 and I was wondering if I'm supposed to be doing story missions one after the other, or are there things for me to do around the city right now?
Chapter 1 is lean breakneck pacing. The game opens up after that. You'll always have a objective but there'll be times where it make more sense to do side missions before going to the next story objective

You can run around and find some substories to do (some of them are funny), play some of the games (bowling, karaoke, etc, make some cash from beating up people in the streets, but the story gets so much better and you unlock some really good gameplay elements by progressing the story.
Just finished the maingame. The last boss on Hard was some tense shit -
I brought a bunch of Royale drinks for both characters, but the insane number of gun enemies in Kiryu's half left me with only one to take Shibusawa on with. I actually had to git gud and memorize his patterns, switch styles for each phase, and nail each QTE to finish him off with only a sliver of health left.
I regret neglecting Majima's side stuff though. I never even did the first Cabaret Club showdown because by the time I could I was too invested in the story, so I ended up using the same cheesy combos and seeing the same heat moves when playing as him. You can bet I'll be sinking a lot of time into Premium Adventure though...
Only thing I didn't get/ felt forced: When Majima finally meets Kiryu randomly (?) in the streets. What's up with that? How does Majima even know it's K.? I guess Majima's reaction is some sort of franchise staple.

Sidequests and such are available from chapter 2 onwards. From that point you can basically run from plot point to plot point or just do whatever you want whenever you want, with some very minor exceptions where certain areas are suddenly blocked off for story reasons. And some activities and quests don't open up until later. There's nothing missable btw.
After I failed to click with Y3 or 4, I tried to give Y0 a try and I'm in love. Can't wait for Kiwami and 6. Do those games also have side content like 0 with the real estate stuff?

Kiwami has substories and the fun mini-activities along with some new stuff but no, they don't have a straight up main side-activity or business.
Yakuza 6 did introduce new stuff like a gym where you get ripped, a clan creator thing (featuring wrestlers from NJPW) where you build up your clan and take on rivals, a cat club, full on baseball team management and some other stuff. Also all substories are fully voiced in Yakuza 6.

I'm predicting the Kiwami OT will have many comments in the beginning laughing at the crazy Majima scenarios, then 20-30 pages later it'll be replaced with "fuck off Majima, leave me alone for 5 minutes will you?!".
I'm up to Chapter 4. I've never played a Yakuza game before. Early impressions. The story is surprisingly intriguing. I can't put my finger on exactly why it is, but it immediately grabbed me once you meet the three Dojima captains. The juxtaposition between the seriousness of the main story and the silliness of the side-quests is a bit odd and I'm still a bit torn on that. Speaking of the side-quests. I was having trouble finding the motivation to do them early on as they weren't very interesting and partially because Kiryu's seriousness as a character didn't mesh well them. Some of them are flat-out boring. I've found them much more enjoyable as Majima. Again, partially because his character fits more with the silliness of the quests and also because the quests have gotten better. I've noticed the ones that almost force you to start them are the best ones so far. Like the religious cult one for example, how a cutscene starts just by walking by the people on the street. The game is pretty funny. Combat is so-so, kind of stiff but has enough flash to it to make it enjoyable.
Glad you like it so far OP. I played the two games on my OG ps3 before it kick the bucket and was hooked for life. Find a way to play all the game in the series, except maybe the zombie one. The entire series has been great and is one the best long running series in gaming that is criminally underrated.
I keep hearing this game get talked up more and more lately. Like others, I haven't played it due to all of the games that released in the beginning of the year. I'm about done with BotW, I think you've convinced me to pick this one up next.

I just started playing this game (my first Yakuza) and I'm really impressed by how good it is. The combat is so satisfying and I bet the story won't disappoint (I only advanced to chapter 2 so far).
But it's the minigames that really caught me by surprise. OMG, yesterday I was planning to check them out for the first time and maybe have some fun with them (in most games I only play each minigame once or twice). I ended up singing karaoke and playing pool for more than three hours. Crazy. Some mini games like pool or darts are done even better than the ones in GTA V.
Started playing this on the weekend and just went into chapter 5 I think. Focusing on the story, because I'm genuinely interested how this plays out.
The game is so dense with content, it's really a throwback into the days where they sold complete games instead of 60 euro starter kits.
It's really good fun. The characters are fleshed out, the atmosphere is wonderful, really digging the game. This is my first real Yakuza, tried 4 but couldn't stand the graphics on ps3.
I like being a badass Yakuza with big shoulders who whipps ass for a living.
Going to get this on the PSN special in the next day or two. Can't wait to play this series at last. Have heard such great things, not to mention seen all the hilarious gifs. Looks like a fun time with an emotional story at its core, same with the remake. Have a good feeling about this series. I already have Kiwami pre-ordered. Voting with my wallet here. Sega needs to know there's a market here in the west for more of the series and hopefully a remake of 2 will follow soon. I know how rocky the later entries were on whether they'd be localized or not.

You don't have to do the side missions if you don't want to, you can make the game as short as you like by playing just the main story (25-30 hours) or as long as you want by doing everything (100+ hours) or somewhere in between.
Use more heat actions to make the game more fun and experiment with how you can get different ones, some are location dependent (like if you're next to a car or something) or weapon dependent. I love kicking people off bridges for example.

I don't know about GTA V, but the mini games have a lot of objectives especially if you try to do all the ones in the completion list which make them a lot of fun. They are like their own games within themselves. Mahjong can be played endlessly and something like the dancing mini game or karaoke take time to get better at.
I struggled with the combat for a while, especially toward the end of that chapter. I'm new to Yakuza and I don't play brawlers. I viewed some tips online, and that helped. I think I'm getting a handle on it, and is pretty fun when things start to flow -- although I've got plenty left to learn.
Good story. I'm surprised at how story-heavy the game is. That's good -- I like story-driven games. I'm glad the game has such a good sense of humor, because otherwise the story and Kiryu might come off as just another tough guy epic. But as it is, when the story or Kiryu get gravely serious, I know the game isn't taking itself that seriously.
Anyhow, thanks for pushing the game, YakuzaGAF. I can tell I'm going to enjoy it, and it's going to be a unique experience. I would never have thought to pick it up, were it not for all the talk around here.

You can play the minigames after you're done with the story, right? I like casual mahjong, but I'd prefer to play the one from Yakuza after I finish the story to have time to learn about the rules. It's not like with darts or singing/dancing where you can just play them without any preparation.
I have come to a point where I dread continue playing and yet can't do otherwise. It's when the feeling "I am enjoying this so much I don't want it to end. Fuck, it will end ;_;" kicks in.

Literally the only thing I didn't like about this game was the tediousness of Kiryu's real estate game. The rest was just pure gold the whole way through.
I do hate the whole cabaret club/hostess culture, but somehow making it into an addicting minigame redeemed that part of the game for me.

Yes, you can keep playing after the final mission and do all the side quests and minigames you missed. You also gain the option of changing your outfit (finally!), switch between characters and change the time of the day.
I loved it at first but stopped playing in chapter 7 or 8. Everything feels so slow and repetitive. I forced myself to play but I just can't anymore. It's also way too long.
That's why the game has so much side content. If you focus on story only you'll be fighting a ton of guys and watching long cutscenes 24/7, it can feel repetitive. Same if you just focus on a minigame, like trying to do the real estate game in one single grind. If you keep a good balance of story, minigames, and side missions it's hard to get bored imho.

To be honest, I still can't believe my "You might die before you get a chance to play 0 if you wait for Kiwami!" post is what actually convinced you to jump in, lol.

It was actually three things: 1) the info about how they'd added content to both the games, so it would make more sense to start with Zero; 2) this thread, which helped persuade me that the combat might be fun, even for someone with fumble fingers, and 3) felt like it.
This game is quirky. I guess you know that already.
I just did the first sidequest I came across, the producer mission. I laughed hard. I was surprised at the end, which was ridiculously cheesy and yet somehow touching.
I'm not sure the mini-games are my thing. I've been a complete flop at every one I've tried (karaoke, baseball, disco, arcade). I'm not sure I'm up for lots of practicing in order to get good.
I'm liking the main story. I'm taking my time and doing lots of wandering around the city. F*ck Mr. Shakedown. I'm glad I spent most of my money before meeting him.
Is it best to specialize in one style (e.g., Brawler) or spread your upgrade money around equally?
Each one really does have a particular use. I ended up focusing slightly more on the style that I liked more than the others, but never neglected any style too much.
The amount of money needed to upgrade increases fairly quickly, so you might as well spread out. Even if you don't really use one or the other, some upgrades (like the max health increases) are global.
