2016 also was ahead at the same point. Jan-Jun 2016: 1,580,163

PS4 sold 3,121,000 in November + December 2015. Add in October and Q4 sold 3,396,000.

Q4 2016 sold 2,915,000 despite the PS4 Pro launch and the price drop to $299.

Jan-Jun 2014: 1,576,000
Jul-Dec 2014: 3,108,000

H1 % of total year sales: 34%

Jan-Jun 2015: 1,553,000
Jul-Dec 2015: 4,175,000

H1 % of total year sales: 27%

Jan-Jun 2016: 1,580,163
Jul-Dec 2016: 3,521,045

H1 % of total year sales: 31%

I wouldn't be surprised if 2017 see's a 35% split for H1. H2 2016 was disappointing and H1 2017 seems to be making up for that with quality software and excellent price deals. Q4 will most likely be down again this year so I can't see how this year is the peak year.
Yeap... I agree but I'm not ruling out the possibility due the software front, bundle and deals.

September: Destiny 2 bundle
October: Gran Turismo Sport bundle (I have to admit this one will be huge in Europe only)
November: CoD and Battlefront bundles
December: ???

Add these bundles close to $250 in November/December plus some $199 one at Black Friday.

I can see around 4m million in Jul-Dec making up this year the peak.

Why?
Sony had plenty of exciting releases back to back. Microsoft is holding everything for the scorp... sorry, One X launch. If anything xbox numbers look pretty good considering we had no new 'exclusive' since halo wars 2 (which is niche enough) to motivate sales. Tbh i expected the gap to be even bigger now that we have the Switch to compete for sales too.

Pretty good?? :p

Great results for Sony, this seems to be the year the ps4 peaks but bext year they will have GoW and Spiderman so idk, we'll have to wait.

The only good thing I can say about MS is, thank god they dont care about selling hardware.

They had a price cut too though. Which looks like it did very little or Xbox sales would have been more tragic than they already were.

I'm curious why you think Q4 will be down this year. They have destiny 2 pro white bundle, Star Wars battlefront 2 with probably a bundle for that too, probably one for gts, and who knows what else Sony has planned.

I'm assuming that October is a flat month as sales will be concentrated in September for the Destiny bundle and people waiting for November's bundles/BF. I'm also assuming November is slightly down as there won't be a new device launch this year but the better software releases will help counter balance that, but not enough for it to be up YoY. For December, I think the increase from November will be closer to 2014 or 2015 than 2016.

If we see any Q4 month up YoY, I bet it'll be October, but I doubt it or Nov/Dec see a YoY bump. Doesn't seem likely.

Plus, everything is dying, and it's usually all the fault of millennials. At least that's what the clickbait articles on the internet tell me.

To be fair everything IS really dying. Including ourselves, the earth, the sun and the universe itself. We are today one day closer to the End of Everything ;)

except for PS1...every playstation's year 1 & 2 are lacklustre....do you even remember the PS2 library before the MGS2/SH2/FF10 combo? There was a time where people thought Dreamcast had a chance because PS2 launched with Ridge Racer V (full of jaggies) and Street Fighter EX3.

i will argue that even PS1's year 1 & 2 were lacklustre in hindsight...

the way i see it, playstation's 1st party output becomes stronger only at year 3 and beyond and almost every Playstation (sans Vita) so far follow this pattern.

Ps2's first year in 2001 was fine. It had Onimusha, gt3, atv off-road fury, klonoa, zone of the Enders with MGS2 demo, and the games you listed in the fall with ico, gta3, and more.

Or, paraphrasing Hemingway: if you you take any story far enough, it will always end in death. But then again, maybe Nietzsche's eternal recurrence is a thing and we will have to relive our lives over and over and over...ewww.

I'm gonna steal that Hemingway quote!!

I didn't believe in Nietzsche's theory but I guess if we're living in a Simulation everything is possible? But then again, even all simulations will reach an end someday, so there's some relief in that...

I also don't think you'll see PS4 go as low as $199 this Holiday even with promotions.
It's funny we are in a time where Europe of all places had 199 ps4s since 2016, and US getting it is being questioned a year later.

The game sold poorly on everything so all that means is people don't want these sim games.
Yep. It's not just Prey that sold poorly, it's Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Dishonored 2 as well. Which is a shame as I loved all three of them, but it's clear that these types of games just aren't very popular right now.

GTA 5: road to 100 million. Must be getting close now. I hope we'll be getting ww numbers for the Crash trilogy at some point. It did great not only in the US but Europe as well.

Grand Turismo is October release. That, with wolfenstein, assacreed, and middle earth is sure to move some hardware.

why hasn't nintendo convinced Rockstar/T2 of porting GTAV to the switch is baffling.

GTAV is a 360/PS3 game so there are no power excuses there and the portable thing alone could prove to be the an important selling point.

hell, if I were Nintendo I'd offer substantial ad support and nintendo-exclusive things like zelda skins and weapons for characters.

if Skyrim is making it there, why not GTA.

also, the "our audience is not there" argument loses any kind of validity in face of potential 100 million sales LTD.

That game can't lose money anymore, no matter where it's ported to.

I think they do like last year and mainly have a first party game as heir main bundle. I can see a limited pro Destiny bundle in October. Them doing a Horizon bundle releasingbin Ovtober and that being the main bundle for the holidays. Then a limited edition Battlefront bundle in November

Amazing that XB1 hasn't had a major release since Halo Wars 2, yet come holiday season we'll see people talking as if the rest of the year didn't matter.

Supposedly the rumored L.A. Noire remaster is coming to Switch. Hard to imagine GTAV isn't far behind, though stranger things have happened.

They do. Don't confuse PR speak with what they really think.

the way i see it, playstation's 1st party output becomes stronger only at year 3 and beyond and almost every Playstation (sans Vita) so far follow this pattern.

PS2 actually had a pretty great one. October 2000 - October 2001 specifically was quite varied: Twisted Metal Black, Gran Turismo 3, ICO, Grand Theft Auto 3, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Dark Cloud, Tekken Tag Tournament, Dynasty Warriors 2 (I might like this one way more than others, but screw it; I loved that game), Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, Klonoa 2, Silent Hill 2.

But overall, I don't think you're off-base. PS1 started off weak, PS2's launch didn't garner high praise, and PS3's launch wasn't that great. I don't think any Playstation system had a launch with a classic game, though I'd argue Resogun is impeccable, even if it's not as well-known as a Halo or Super Mario World or Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The biggest games for most of these systems came later in its cycle, with the PS2 being an exception. I'd actually argue its 2001 was much better than 2002 and especially 2003. It did everything in reverse. =P

I say there's a big chance November will be up YoY, as last year PS4 sold only 1.1M, and with Battlefront 2 and CoD:WWII I think ~1.2M is gonna surely happen.

December being up YoY is out of question though, they'll be lucky to even have 1.4M.

This year H2 will be quite different from 2016 H2, where SIEA really dropped the ball on hardware bundles and had a lackluster release slate in software.

This year, in H2, we are looking at

Uncharted Lost Legacy in August
Destiny 2 with bundles
COD WW2 with bundles (seems much more anticipated than IW)
Battlefront 2 with bundles
Gran Turismo Sports

And of course Goat Knack 2

Given the drop in Q4 2015, I think PS4 will easily be up YoY, and up for the whole year as well.
Will it do more than Q4 2015, is the question imo.

I never would have expected over 400k units for Crash.

Crazy how it rallied people.
Probably uncharted 4

Holy shit.

Please don't fuck this up Activision. CTR remake being next is fine, but a brand new Crash platformer is the correct step after. No more remakes and no toys-to-life gimmicks thrown in. A pure, 3D Crash platformer will sell millions if done right.

Also, I hope this lights a fire under Microsoft's ass and we see some substantial Rare remasters and/or revivals.

also launched with timesplitters, tekken tag and SSX...i don't believe anyone in their right mind thought dreamcast had a chance. lol

It's gonna be really interesting to see what effect GT:S will have in October.

As a european I quite often meet the sentiment: "Why would I buy a PS4? It doesn't have a GT"

SFV only sold 1.6 million copies, but I'm certain it's making money off DLC. It's priced high and whales keep whaling. Plus with whatever money it's getting from the TV deals, it's definitely in the black.
Everything has DLC! I guess the investors love exposure instead of money...still pitiful to what the other fighters do...

At this point the surprise is not GTA chartimg but gaffers being surprised that GTA is charting :p

Pretty much. GTA's been a monster and has incredible widespread appeal. Millions upon millions of people are buying news consoles every year. They're also buying GTAV with it.
