Even if we weaken them in 2018 or vote them out in 2020, they will probably pull a North Carolina and burn the government down out of spite as much as they can. I don't see any clean way out of this.

Bill died three times now, but McConnell keeps bringing it back from the dead because he wants to give Trump a reacharound.
We don't know what the bill itself is, but the vote itself isn't on a bill, it's to open debate on the ACHA which will then be replaced and amended by this new unknown bill. A vote on that bill, whatever it is, will come later.

This actually happened during the House vote.
It's always kind of annoyed me how so many old people on death's door vote, they'll never have to deal with the aftermath. This situation is the epitome of why. He won't be able to see the affects of dismantling ACA, deal with angry constituents, or watch the world burn/flood because of climate change. Just gives everyone one last fuck you on the way out.
At this point, we don't even know if whatever this is will pass reconciliation rules lol.

I respect him as a Vietnam war veteran and a POW who refused to go home when presented the opportunity due to his father's powerful position unless everyone left with him. He stayed with the other soldiers for years. On that level, everyone should respect the man.

Not what I was doing. I was emphasising that we don't anything about the bill that will be put forward if the debate motion goes through. I assume it would be the same procedure as other instances when a senator leaves their position (i.e., getting a position under a new president) - the state governor appoints a replacement and the seat is voted on during the next election.
If the timeframe is too short for an appointee to vote, that seat may just not get a vote. Edit: Absent, like Shauni said.
Worth noting there are exceptions to this, like the Alabama special election to replace Sessions is happening in a special election this year instead of having it in 2018.
