I'm thinking of buying one, but I'm not sure how just yet. I was also looking at the Dell U27". Anyone have the new Apple monitor? How do you like it.

it's over-priced is what it is regardless of the quality. I'd go with the dell over the apple.

edit - do you have a mac or pc?

You can find the dell monitor at a much better deal online with coupon codes.

For example a simple google search i was able to find the dell at $745.

They do. As long as you get Dell's high-end monitors rather than their cheap shit, it's the same as what you'd get from Apple. Dell puts anti-glare coating on it that makes it seem duller and grainier and Apple's glass makes their monitors into bright as hell mirrors, but it's the same tech.

nice but not worth the money imo

Apple-
high gloss(I hate on a desktop)
not as many in puts as the Dell
not as many adjustments-height, etc..

Dell-
matte screen
every input you could imagine
very adjustable
less expensive

I personally went with the dell 30" and couldn't be happier, it and the 27" are stunning monitors. the only place apple wins is design Imo.

I'm using the 27" iMac, which uses the same panel and LED lighting as the Cinema Display. Absolutely love it. I was using the Apple 23" Cinema Display prior, and I find this a nice upgrade. If you got the cash, get it. Glare/reflections are generally a non issue if you're concerned with that.

I don't have any experience with that Dell monitor, but my Grandfather has a similar one, and it was quite nice too.

It is a beautiful monitor however it only has 1 input which was a deal breaker for me since I like using my monitor to switch between PCs.

I have the 27" iMac, it's the best display I've ever used. I've got my gaming PC running into it through miniDisplayPort and games have never looked better.

its already been mentioned, but the actually lcd panel is probably the same in both monitors. The Dell loses points for style but wins in just about everything else. It has many many more inputs.

The Apple monitor charges Apple notebooks and it has speakers, a microphone, and a webcam.

I don't think you know the full story behind these products to be talking about them. :(

Dell use to get it's screens from Samsung (or was it Sharp). Not sure if that's the case anymore, but Dell monitors are still very good (even the ones we get in at work).

I wonder what the Wii looks like on that?

which is why I asked if he had a mac..if that's the case it might make more sense to go that route. Speakers and webcam aren't a huge factor imo.

What kind of games are you intending on playing on it? I'm sure any console will plug into the Dell pretty easily, not sure what you might need to do for the Mac display though.

If you're going to be playing PC games on it, just make sure your system has enough muscle to run games comfortably at that very high native rez.

PC gaming only, yea I plan on buying a new AMD 6900 series Video card.

The lcd panels themselves, yes. The backlighting, controllers, everything else, is vendor specific. That said, even being a pretty big Apple whore, I would be tempted to go with the Dell for matte screen and inputs.

Yeah, but one's a nice looking Apple product while the other one's a tacky Dell and everyone will think you stole it from an office. So there are plusses and minuses to consider here.

Hey guys,

Dell's 27" LED-backlit IPS display is $999.

Apple's 27" LED-backlit IPS display is $999.

When trying to give advice, don't just speak out of your ass.

Nobody in their right mind pays full price for a Dell anything.
25% and 10% stackable coupon codes were spread across the ner the first 2 and a half weeks of this month. Fatwallet, Slickdeals, etc.

Dell UltraSharp U2211 for $209 after coupon code: 75HV0XZ$HN?52F Free shipping
Dell UltraSharp U2711 for $824.25 after coupon code: P?XSB2$8XSH3M3 Free Shipping
Dell UltraSharp U3011 for $1124.25 after coupon code: P?XSB2$8XSH3M3 Free Shipping

These are dead now, I think, but you can usually get it applied if you talk with a sales rep or two. And they do stack with the still-active 10% off coupon.

The U3011 and U2711 were selling for about 65% of retail cost this month. Quite a bit less than the competition. And don't forget Dell has a pixel-perfect return policy. A single stuck, dead, whatever pixel gets you an exchange for a new unit. And you get a 3 year warranty standard.

And as for panels themselves, the Dells are not LED backlit. This is the only difference compared to the Apple. This is a good thing. The LED backlighting in the Apple displays are not full RGB LEDs. You get a shitty blue hue.

Full RGB LED backlight > Good CCFL > LED backlight > Crap CCFL

So, Liu Kang Baking a Pie, when trying to give "advice", please don't.

That's also just how apple's default color settings on all of their monitors are. You always have to re-calibrate any of their monitors out of the box (at least if you are using a mac, huge osx pet peeve of mine, their default color profiles have always been way, WAT too fucking cool).

While I don't like Apple's usual default temperature/calibration, that's a separate issue from the LED hue.

Fair enough. That in general doesn't bug me too much though once I recalibrated the one LED monitor of theirs I do use on occasion. (but it's not the monitor I do my design work on, so I'm not really looking for it.)

Nothing you wrote shatters me in any way to the point that this sort of thing is necessary. I'm with you on all of it.

I mean, if I make you so angry that you're ready to pounce on me every time you see me post, we're at least all going to benefit from an informative post while we deal with it. So everyone wins.

Having seen it in the store and then at someone's home is a big difference due to lighting.

I would say that if you need a large monitor, there isn't one that is as good as the Apple display unless you start looking at Dell or Gateway in which you're looking at 27" or above.

I'm actually going to be plunking down the coin for the 27" iMac here in the next few months because I have a lot of Photshop/Web development coming in the next year and I want something large enough to not make my eyes hurt.

If you need it, buy it.

Is that Victoria Justice in your avatar?

I know it's an old thread, but I absolutely love it. Games look stunning, everything is awesome. Best Monitor I've had.

I'm pretty sure the Dell isn't LED. 12-bit processor allows it 1.0.7 billion colours vs. 16.7 million on the Cinema Display. 110% gamut whereas nothing is mentioned on the Cinema Display. HDMI & DisplayPort on the Dell.

The Dell is clearly the better deal, and the better display. When you see them in person, you can tell.

Heh, i was actually thinking about getting that for my new rig im building. I gonna get it 100% now :D

This is the same screen in the 27" iMacs... it's insane, it makes my 4-year old and (at the time) $700 Gateway monitor look like a piece of shit.

I love the 27" screen. I have it hooked up to my Mac Pro and it looks gorgeous. Glare is the only issue, if you have a bright room I'd go with the Dell... but I'm a sucker for the aesthetics and build quality of the ACD.

I have shutters, so i can shut out light if I want, so no problem with glare for me.

I use a 27" iMac and the screen is fantastic. Unless you are doing some serious colour matching work, or you require your screen to be print calibrated, don't fucking worry about it.

Not sure why some people are concerned about a blue hue. Should I post that 'it's the future and nobody is happy' video from Louis C.K? I used to use a 13" green screen crt that would actually shoot needles into your eyes.

so what kind of rig did you end up putting together?

i5 2500k
EVGA GTX 580 Black ops
8gig DDR3 1333 OCZ Ram
Crucial 128g C300 SSD
1TB Segate HDD
Asus P67 P8 Pro

I probably upgrade the cpu later this year.

I'm using the 24-inch Cinema Display and love it. Got it refurbed from Apple. I have my laptop set up now to go from desk to mobile as quickly and easily as possible (Cinema Display connectors and Time Capsule). It's the best computer setup I've ever had.

It's pretty f'in great. Amazing picture, fantastic colour and super crisp and consistent. Sure there is some glare as it's reflective. Build quality is nothing short of stunning, the aluminum and glass construction is just gorgeous. And best of all, it's got plugs for charging your laptop as well as a three port USB hub linked to your computer.

If price is not an issue, I'd definitely recommend. Wish they made it bigger, though.

Get the 2711, I got it before christmas and i'm in love.

The cinema display is better designed, but the dell is the better option and you can get it cheaper. I got mine for $730 CAD
