What is the deal with awful people online and anime avatars?

Not open for further replies.
There are a lot of anime that appeal to pedophiles, misogynist and socially awkward people. There are a lot of anime fans with generally left field opinions.
This is the same for video games as well so whatever I guess

Lol its basically fact at this point. On twitter it's anime avatars, bald eagles, or some sort of hick logo. Gotta watch out for people like that, cause 9 times out of 10...

Videogame forum making fun of anime. Reminds me of sports forums making fun of videogames.

Judge people on what they post not an avatar. Weird way to look at things. Some people like Anime which covers a wide category.

Lumping all of that together is stupid. Weird here of all places you would see this.

Guess anything Japanese is blasted here. This thread did give some good laughs though.

Bebop avatars are the only exception

And Trigun.

Cartoons maybe, but your middle option is from a superhero themed manga. You can find far worse in pretty much any american superhero comic if we're talking about depictions of women.
"Far worse" my ass. You can find a lot of terrible shit in Western comics too but hardly any of it ever reaches the lows of Japanese media, at least in terms of insidious sexualization of underage female characters.

Have you...

Have you ever watched western cartoons?

Not a "this is my impression of western cartoons", but I mean have you really honest-to-fuck watched western cartoons, because this exact same sort of shit happens there too.

Okay, maybe I'd be hard-pressed to find a genderbent past-figure, but the other two can be matched easily just by picking a couple of decade-old shows from cartoon network.
I grew up on Western cartoons and I honestly have no fucking clue what you're on about.

I mean, this is on the front page of /r/anime and it's not even marked NSFW. Not to mention, "decade-old" examples? I told you this shit is UBIQUITOUS in Japan and I fucking meant it. You can find decade-old examples of Japanese media doing this shit very trivially, and you can also take your pick of series being released today that are just chock-full of this shit, and gratuitously so considering how often the premise has nothing to do with sex in the first place.

They're just nowhere near the same scale. Simple as that.

Also, regarding your other post, please don't use "he" to refer to people you don't know the gender of. "They" or my username are acceptable, but as I do not identify as male it's kind of annoying to be addressed that way. (I'll note the only reason I'm mentioning it now is because it's relevant as it colors my opinion on this matter considerably.)
I'm sure there's plenty of well adjusted anime fans out there, but half the reason of why I just stopped watching that shit altogether was because it was wrecking my psyche. It was just unhealthy for me to watch it, it was starting to fill my head with some fucked up shit that I really didn't want to be thinking.

That, and 99% of the medium is filled with garbage. Other forms of media are pretty dire as well, but I've never seen a different medium that's so filled with gross shit and unsavory philosophies behind them. And they're really boring too
Well, to be fair, gaming is so full of this crap that we got Gamergate shit, so it's not like anime & manga are alone in that regard. In terms of the sheer density of crap, though, and the amount of sexism involved... it's kind of hard to top it, yeah.
./thread

Look at yourself in the mirror GAF.
Please. We criticize gaming side all the time, too. Anime & manga are not some special category of targeted media.

I thought I was the only one noticing this weird trend

Hentai dudes are exceptionally weird

Then again same can be said for a lot of gamers

So, you are criticizing the sexualization of the little girls, right?

Don't get me wrong, i agree with you and i hate that stuff, but the concept of ubiquity is of something that is present everywhere and all and that kind of stuff is hardly present in most anime. I've never watched one of those in my life and i've saw a lot of anime shit. It's fairly obvious what they are and easy to avoid.

If you don't like every kind of sexualization, then, of course, we need to admit that this stuff is present in every media of every country.

I have noticed that the weird little cult who are determined to ruin DarkSydePhil's life mostly use anime avatars for things. It's probably more a being anonymous thing for fear of being in trouble one day though.

The thing you linked to is New Game a story about women of working age working in game development.

American cartoons generally don't include stuff like this (NSFL warning) or that or this, too. And that's just off the top of my head and doesn't include things like "fanservice" moments in otherwise tame shows because it's the norm, and when I say "fanservice" note that I'm usually talking about very visibly and obviously underaged girls.

That's not to say that American stuff is free of this shit, but this stuff is ubiquitous in the anime industry. It's on a completely different scale. To the point where it's extremely difficult to avoid it if you like to watch a lot of different genres.

That's from fate though, which is fucking trash all-around/a porn game adaptation. Biggest wasted potential of all time, what an abysmal handling of it's interesting premise

If you have the tiniest quality standards for the entertainment you consume you can safely skip literally any otaku pandering trash like that, you won't be missing anything. People who are into this shit are usually not worth having a conversation with anyways, living memes that unironically say "best/worst girl". I guess there are some more worthy shows like the Monogatari series but even then they are quite skippable, especially if you're straight up repulsed by otaku/harem/loli shit in the first place

I'd say a lot of it is to do with people who watch anime to an absurd degree, and live and breathe it and go around "desu"ing and shit, are probably offputting to women, and thus end up all nice and lonely and ripe for some nazi asshole to tell them that it's really *the women* that are at fault for their lonliness, and also by the way the blacks and the jews. And then that guy becomes a Nazi, and starts spreading fucking Nazism to his friends (all of whom also go around "desu"ing everyone) and bam, game over man.
Essentially, Nazis are like zombies -- they prey on the weak and vulnerable and in turn change them into one of their own.
I say all this as a person who would rather watch an anime over watching a live action show in a lot of instances.
I also say this as a Japanese major.

TL;DR, fuck Nazis, anime's alright in moderation, but go outside and talk to people like you're normal and you'll be okay.

I don't know much about Fate/Stay Night or whatever, except that it was a visual novel from back when the only value of a visual novel was being in porn, so the publisher demanded that it have porn randomly thrown into it. I've heard people say the porn bits feel obviously forced (in the not really planned to be in it way), so take that as you will.

Should think on expanding on OT side as well, tbh.
???

Not sure what the point of this post is...

Absolutely, sexism is present in every facet of modern society. The thing is that Japan is pretty unique when it comes to how overtly they'll put that sexism on display, and even moreso with the normalization of what amounts to pedophilic pandering.

I think saying it's "easy to avoid" is a bit disingenuous. I mean, My Hero Academia has shades of this stuff and it's about as mainstream as you can get. In fact, the only series off the top of my head that doesn't do this shit is Attack on Titan, and it's a really obvious outlier in this regard.

I'll watch a series like Rage of Bahamut, which has some stellar animation, direction, and even some fun character writing, but has mobile-game-tier (literally, because it's a mobile game adaptation) female character designs that are tailor-made to put T&A in your face, and on top of that sexualizes the really-200-years-old little girl character (albiet sparingly, it's still there). I'm not going to skip the series because of this stuff as everything else makes it worth watching. I just literally cannot avoid it.
The thing you linked to is New Game a story about women of working age working in game development.
I know what it is, thanks. I suppose I should have pointed that out because, yeah, the fact that it's ostensibly about women working in game dev and still includes stuff that can charitably be described as "lolicon pandering" is a big red flag.

Eh. Fate was actually fairly respectable in this regard before it became a cash cow. In fact, Fate/Stay Night only had the sex scenes shoehorned in for marketing purposes, and the main writer didn't even touch those scenes. If anything, its spiral into depravity as it grew in popularity is a great example of how money can corrupt a franchise as it goes big.

As for skipping it, see above. Speaking of, I still recommend Rage of Bahamut despite the skeevier elements. It's just that good of a series.

I particularly enjoy how defensive grown men can get when questioned on why they're choosing borderline pedophilic imagery for their avatars.

Creepy shit. Wish it wasn't tolerated around here.

Non waifu avis are cool but if you're all about presumably underaged animated Japanese school girls, sort that shit out.

I mean while I understand what drove this thread, you guys are on enthusiast video game forum. Do you think the alt right doesn't love video games or have video game related avatars? Gamergate ring a bell?

Yeah a lot of the otaku pandering stuff is from fate aprocypa while stay night and zero generally avoid that at least tame by anime standards。

Yeah can tell from the design from the berserkers and assassin where they start with looking like theu came from a horror and look like monsters and assassin being beings of black cloak to gender bent, sexier version of classical monster and a loli。

Long as you don't bash Astolfo we good. Only reason I've made it through three episodes of that awful show.

I don't get these attempts at defending anime by focusing on games. Is it too difficult to accept anime might have specific problems? And regardless - the amount of anime avatars is way too high, no one is saying there aren't awful people with gamimg, Hollywood, or whatever avatars.

And honestly GG is the exact same crowd - their mascot is an anime girl, they communicate in anime girl gifs, and they rage when creepy Japanese games get altered during localization.

Hentai ain't that bad
Oddly enough, I don't have a problem with the actual pornography. Because:

1. It's up-front about its purpose and doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is, and

2. I never have to see it if I don't go out of my way to search for it.

It's the more insidious stuff that's being broadcast during daylight hours that really gets my goat. It's just shameless in a bad way. And, y'know, the fact that the fandom produces so much porn really makes me question why the fuck the producers feel the need to gratuitously sexualize their characters so much. It's so unnecessary it hurts.
Is it all anime avatars? :[
Or the weird underage girl avatars...
I'd say more the latter for sure. Bonus creep points if it's from something with lots of lolicon pandering.

I think there are awful people everywhere but sure, some people who watches anime shares some traits with the japanese Otaku, you know: Awkward people who sexualize every thing and tries to have a pantsu shot to end up bashing some idol online because she dared to love someone.

Most anime tries to aim that target because those guys just work and live to drop those sweet $$$$ and I can imagine that some anime fans on western who like that same type of anime might share some of that mindset.

I mean, I love anime and all that stuff but that is the only reason I can think some guys on twitter behave that way, because a lot of japanese guys behave the same way.

Long as you don't bash Astolfo we good. Only reason I've made it through three episodes of that awful show.

My man.

I am gonna protect that smile online.

Couldn't even make through one

Only fate show with a damn is UBW and zero

Also Kara no kyokai if it counts

I haven't seen any of the other Fate shows, but I might give UBW a chance. A lot of old my old friends used to be pretty into the series (and I even had a coworker recommend it) so I figured I'd start with the newest show. Definitely wasn't my brightest idea.

Nothing good has come out of anime, plain and simple. Whether it contributes to the basement dweller's alt-right mindset, pedophilia, or simply making them a weird ass weeb, it unleashes the worst found deep within the heart of man.
