Jimquistion: Nintendo's SNES Classic Preorder Nonsense

Speaks for itself, I think he makes some good points along the way. I know a lot of people share the same feeling of defeat or resignation regarding Nintendo products.

Important to note that he doesn't really touch on the daytime preorders that were sniped by bot-equipped scalpers. I think that has even more weight towards his argument than the preorders going up in the middle of the night. It shows complete disregard from Nintendo and retailers.

This isn't a Jimquisition, tho...

Regardless, Nintendo are pulling a lot of dumb shit with this. I definitely do agree with him on the whole artificial scarcity front. Nintendo are basically fucking anyone who isn't waking up at a random ass time or people that don't have weird bots set up. It's kind of ridiculous how much they're feeding the scalper market.

But they said they had changed after NES classic :( Some of us unfortunately knew better

Didn't catch that when I was making the thread, my bad! If a mod wants to change it they definitely can.

Just watched it. I agree with his points. Nintedo at this point really has to be doing this on purpose, even if they say they are not. Someone high up the chain is just laughing down at us like peasants scrambling for scraps. In the end Nintendo will still get their money even if a number of SNES classics end up in the hands of scalpers. They don't give two shits about the people who actually want it.

You know, if NoA said something like "you know what, we don't like scalpers either, and we're working hard to make sure that supply will meet demand" it would do plenty to turn a few frowns upside down.

Just a tweet. Simple.

No joke, I went back and revisited his NES Classic takedown after feeling violated by that stupid thinkgeek bundle I bought.

Jason on Kotaku brought up a point that if Nintendo isn't doing this on purpose, they should offer a digital collection package of these games for the vitrual consoles at like 60 dollars or whatever. That obviously wouldn't solve the problem but it would be a nice gesture for Nintendo fans.

Absolutely not. Lip service means nothing when their actions are condoning that behavior in the first place.

Why would they say something like that if it's not really what they think?

Anyways Nintendo is basically never getting my money again. By choice. Their choice.

You know what would work even better? Releasing a reasonable quantity of a product.

I got cart sniped about 5 times in the morning. The night before I slept early for the first time in ages and I miss the BB snes by 15 minutes.. I would have missed Amazon's no matter what since who the hell stays up until 1AM on a work day.

I feel like I've been a loyal customer to Nintendo throughout the years. I love the stuff they make and I love sharing it with others. I love games on all systems (just ordered the new Uncharted for PS4 literally five minutes ago), but my gaming heart belongs to Nintendo.

So it's a really shitty feeling to know that this SNES Classic may be impossible to find. I didn't manage to get a preorder. Instead, the lion's share of them went to people who don't even care about Nintendo and who just plan to profit off those who do.

I'd really like to play this... Oh well. :-(

He's right, again. I don't know what changes have been going on behind the scenes at Nintendo, but they're taking the industry's worst aspects - like DLC and pre-orders - and finding ways to make them worse. It's like they're making it their mission to be as hostile to their fanbase as possible.

Perhaps he should call out NoA specifically. I didn't have any problems with getting a NES Mini in the UK, and have also got my preorder locked down for the SNES Mini.

I haven't had any issues with Nintendo UK.

Nintendo doesn't care about scalpers. As long as they move units they don't care who is doing the buying and what happens after the fact. This should be obvious after all these years.

They shipped 2.3 million NES Classics in six months, which IIRC is more than most retro plug-and-play consoles ship after multi-year runs.

All for a product they've described as a novelty to appeal to lapsed players and drive brand awareness during the holidays.

Nintendo has literally zero interest in meeting demand with this thing.

The whole point of it is to generate demand, not satisfy demand.

Not to mention that shipping more just to counter scalpers is not necessarily a slam-dunk strategy, since then the would-be scalped units just flood back into the market. The best move would be to thwart the strategies used by scalpers to hoard units, which Nintendo has no control over.

The thing is, Nintendo's not moving as many units as they can or should. On purpose. They have zero interest in selling as much as possible.

what is the bootleg super mario kart he is using? is it a real game or did he just animate a fake video so nintendo wouldn't do a take down lol

It's all about building hype, and it works because you're all going to try and get the next one, if anyone could buy one then people wouldn't want one as much.

If my brother didn't text me like a wild person when he got up for work I would have missed amazon. Insane

Absolutely. It's amazing to see Nintendo come up with ways to make the worst parts of gaming even worse. They're awful and I go out of my way to make sure my money doesn't go to them (buying used, renting, etc.) They make great games, but are insufferable at everything else and I root against their success in the market at this point.

Well, not endorsing piracy or something, but since I can't officially buy a NES or a SNES Classic, I simply bought a Raspberry Pi 3. Too bad that Nintendo doesn't want my freaking money.

This is not for Nintendo so to get involved in. It's up to the retailers to limit sales per costumer, if they want to do that to begin with.
This is my position. Scarcity is up to Nintendo, everything else is on the retailers.
