Jimquistion: Nintendo's SNES Classic Preorder Nonsense

Jim is right on with this one. I want to hope demand catches up with supply at some point, but I doubt it will...
You know, if NoA said something like "you know what, we don't like scalpers either, and we're working hard to make sure that supply will meet demand" it would do plenty to turn a few frowns upside down.

Just a tweet. Simple.
It would certainly help ease tensions with some, yes.

It's best to just let it go. Nintendo doesn't give a shit to supply correctly, so why get worked up. It sucks, but it happens again and again, year after year.

I was addicted to amiibos like crack and did dumb shit like wait in line at GameStop for an hour during a weekday just to preorder Ness. The NES classic broke me free and I'm over them.

Just spend the money on other things.

As some others have said Nintendo's problem is not making enough units. The bigger problem is the retailers that are putting up preorders at odd hours and aren't taking countermeasures to deter scalpers. I'd figure between the information in IP address, location information, shipping information, names from the payer, names from the receiver, phone numbers for the payment info, phone numbers for the pickup/deliver, email addresses, and payment methods there should be a way to pare down the number of orders from scalpers and bots.

Is this a US problem or does this occur worldwide because I managed to get my order in just fine with Amazon UK. Granted I do feel for you guys as I remember pre-ordering not long after the intial announcement but yours didn't go up till recently.

Also screw the scalpers, I remember getting frustrated when I was unable to get the Lucinda amiibo because it was sold out and wasn't in stock for a long time.

UK seems to have got wayyyyyy more allocation than NA.

I remember it was available for a good several hours in EU, NA were all gone in minutes.

Looking forward to watching this - I will do in a bit.
I save Jimquistion's till bedtime as I strangely, I find them soothing and I'm ready for sleep by the time it's finished.

I guess one line of logic is that they're trying to build awareness to help sales of the switch? Except the switch already sells out everywhere too haha xd

Retailers do not care about all that

Let's see how long the SNES classic is produced. Pre-orders for all consoles have scalpers buying them and for the most part they all sell out. If Nintendo discontinue's the SNES Classic, like they did the NES Classic, thats when I would be upset.

And what person instead buys a $300 switch console when they can't find a NES or snes classic? Do these people even exist? The switch is also sold out everywhere.

Why do they even make these fucking things then.

It comes out Sept 29th and only sold until the end of 2017. So three months during the busy holiday shopping period when toy scalpers are out of their caves. Plus you know retailers are going to hoard stock for Black Friday door buster stuff.

Oh well.

Retailers don't care who they're selling to, all they care is that they're moving units. If one person buys all 100 units or 100 people buy 100 units, the end result is still the retailers sold 100 units.

That's why it's impossible for Nintendo to get out in front of this. Sure, they could allocate more units, but until retailers either start limiting items to one per person, bots are always going to have to advantage.

Confirmed to be a 2017 only product already lol

I'm just holding out hope that Nintendo will actually flood the market with these and the scalpers will be sitting on a shit ton of these they scooped up via preorders.

Yeah I'm delusional early into the day.

This is my position. Scarcity is up to Nintendo, everything else is on the retailers.
Spot on. People are free to hammer on Nintendo for not producing enough copies all day long. That's entirely on Nintendo. Scalpers and such a side effect of the market. That's on retailers to fight. If they even care.
This dude is master of knocking down open doors in the most tiresome way.
Yeah. I appreciate his videos on weird copyright abuses on YouTube, since I don't know much about that system. But stuff like this is just... OK? So you made this video for people to cheer you on or what?

The Americas don't really do pre-orders it seems like. Or they start them very late. Again, got three pre-orders secured and it was relatively hassle free for me in Europe.

Meh, I'm betting Jim will get thr SNES classic at some point. Blame Nintendo all you want, not there fault online servers are not honouring 1 per person or noe allowing bots to order.

Retailers do not care about all that

So maybe now's a good time to put some pressure on the retailers to fix this stuff instead of solely blaming Nintendo?

Was the rumor of Amazon US having no order limit true? If true then Amazon truly doesn't care about scalpers buying everything.

I seriously doubt that Nintendo directed Amazon to start preorders at 2 AM. Is a very weird thing to call Nintendo on.

US.

Amazon U.K. Pre-orders lasted over an hour

If that isn't backed up by action, then those words are irrelevant. It's like their NES mini responses 'sorry we under-supplied the market, we got caught off guard. We're going to continue stocking the product in response'......flash forward a month later 'Oh by the way, we're cutting off production this month'. Like, what the fuck are they doing?!

Purposefully being hostile to their fanbase. And people keep eating it up.

I seriously think they halted production of NES classic because that thing was blown wide open and people were hacking it left and right. If that never happened I bet it'd still be in production right now.

They know what they're doing and it isn't good for consumers who just want the damn thing. It shouldn't be hard to fill demand but I think they do want the articles and the hype and the pictures of ridiculously long-lines.

The SNES mini is also going to get blown wide open. I'm fairly certain they haven't beefed up any of the security on it, and it's not like the thing is online and can be subjected to security updates.

I think the better reason is that they needed those production lines for SNES Classic and never had any intention of trying to make and sell multiple Nintendo Classics Mini consoles simultaneously + they also never had any intention of NES Classic being a long-term product anyway and they went out of their way just to make more beyond the holidays.

No, nintendo pretty expected or maybe even wanted the thing to be hacked, they even put a hidden message in the code.

Yeah. Many people just don't make that distinction. It all starts with Nintendo undershipping, but seeing how European retailers handle it, I'd say it's possible to make this experience not as terrible as it is in the US. But hey, hammering on Nintendo instead of a bunch of retailers makes for a better YouTube video.

It's bizarre, maybe they ended up switching production immediately to the SNES Classic, hopefully to focus on getting more of those made in time. With their resources, they could and should be making both, but Nintendo I guess.

It remains to be seen what stock will actually look like on launch day, pre-orders were a total sham but that's not up to Nintendo, the stores allocate how many pre-sales vs. launch day. For B&M stores especially, most of that stock is to drive traffic into an actual store.

Oh for sure. Look at all the articles out of Japan with people lining up around the block just for the 'chance' to buy a Switch via lottery system.

Honest, genuine question:

Is there actually any proof that there are huge percentages of orders going to bots/scalpers buying these or are people just a bit gutted that they missed out?

That doesn't negate my point, and I was aware it's supposedly only a 2017 product. That said, we don't know how many pre-orders they took, we don't know how many units will be available day one, we don't know how many restocks they plan on having, etc...

They didn't do pre-orders for the NES Classic and got roasted for that. To me doing pre-orders is already an improvement over the NES Classic. They may also have just as much stock available in stores on Day 1 for the SNES Classic as they did the NES Classic. Right now, we don't know but if they end up only producing similar amounts overall, that's when I would be upset.

Its always the fans who suffer with Nintendo's idiotic supply chain shenanigans.

After stressing myself out back to back over not getting a SNES Classic or the 2pack Metroid amiibo, I came to the conclusion that after I get my cheap Mario Odyssey preorder, Im done with Nintendo.

These amiibo, limited editions and classic hardware are supposed to be for the fans yet its the fans who stress most trying to get one. So Im out, I can't put up with this shit anymore.

I wanted to support Nintendo but they make it so hard. I'll just use that money I save on more PS4/PC games.

They know what they're doing and it isn't good for consumers who just want the damn thing. It shouldn't be hard to fill demand but I think they do want the articles and the hype and the pictures of ridiculously long-lines.

My position is that Nintendo wants to sell Switch'es, and these devices are limited items to rise brand awareness. I don't think that they are making much profit of this things, they are not that much more expensive that a Pi and Nintendo would rather sell you VC versions at a higher total price.

Oh for sure. Look at all the articles out of Japan with people lining up around the block just for the 'chance' to buy a Switch via lottery system.

I hope this is irony. Nintendo only managed to supply 20k Switch units this last week in Japan. That's not some genius artificial scarcity strategy, that's just embarrassing.

I can tell you already: not enough.

I can tell you already: not enough.

What's enough though?

I get why people are pissed. Hell, to this day, I've still never even seen a NES Classic in person, and I wanted to get one for my son for Christmas.

I just don't see any way to really solve the bot issue. No matter how many Nintendo makes, if a computer program is buying them in mass, there's no way a person can compete with that.

The limited supply is a religion thing. They believe you are the lucky one if you manage to get one. The Japanese believe in good fortune as in you are blessed to buy their products.

I can tell you already: not enough.

How much would be enough? That's the thing, no matter how many they were able to have for pre-orders it wouldn't be enough. After the NES Classic there were going to be scalpers all over this, which is exactly what happened.

They said they planned on producing more and they took pre-orders this time, which are both good signs. It may very well not meet demand, but before I freak out I'm willing to see if they back up their words and product significantly more.

It is estimated that the reseller market for Nike's Air Jordan sneakers is around 4%

https://fivethirtyeight.com/feature...ys-see-hundreds-of-millions-in-resale-profit/

Luber says only 1 percent of Air Jordans sold at retail end up on eBay, based on his analysis of retail and eBay sales data. Again, assuming eBay makes up a quarter of the secondary market, then presumably 4 percent of Air Jordans sold at retail end up on the secondary market. That suggests 96 percent of consumers buying Air Jordans are paying the average retail price of $170, instead of the average secondary-market price, which Luber says is $265.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's similar here. Most people buy Nike sneakers to wear them/collect them, only a fraction goes to "scalpers", and probably most NES/SNES Classics at retail go to people who want to own/play them.
